I know this isn't the best place for this and this thread will probably get locked out soon, but allow me to explain my plight to you...

When SWG came out a year or so ago, I was one of the 1st people online. I picked it up the 2nd day of it's release which I BELIEVE was June 6th. Since that time it has grown and expanded to an obscene amount, as many of you know. As time went on and the game got bigger, I became caught up in all the options and routes in the game. Sadly it costs money to keep it running online and I can't always afford to pay the money to stay online...in fact it's been months since I last played. But I'll get to the point. I'm asking for help, and I hope some of you who read this will be able to gimme some advice before the thread gets locked. My problem is this: When I play SWG my computer suffers lag...THE WORST LAG. For example, when I am in a city or around large amounts of other people my screen seems to freeze but I can still hear all the noises around me. It takes me literally MINUTES to walk the equivelant of 10 feet in the game, and if I'm lucky I don't get shut out entirely and have to login again. I don't know what the problem is. Even after my computer was crashed to rid it of viruses, when I revisted SWG shortly thereafter the lag persisted and no1 could believe just how bad it was. To travel from 1 shuttleport to another took me sometimes as much as 30+ minutes IF, again, my connection didn't close on me, and don't even get me started on combat because a laggy player whose actions on the screen are 10 seconds behind what they are in real life doesn't hold his own too long against even the whimpiest of creatures. I have a Windows XP (2002 I believe) with a DSL connection. I know very little about PC programming or components or anything outside of what you can be taught between the grades 1 and 12. If ANYBODY has any idea why this is happening and how I could remedy it, please tell me, lol. Now that SWG is expanding like CRAZY I am dying to get back into it before my veteran character is overshadowed by the surge of technology passing him by. Please feel more than free to PM me or leave it here in this thread. If you'd rather talk to me on AIM then plese PM me and I can give you my sn. I have seen pics of everything that has currently been happening in the game and I think I'm having withdrawls, lol. I need to get back into it ASAP! Thanks

When in the cities, look down to the ground and use the map to navigate. That's how I got around the lag issue. It also might help to upgrade your RAM and CPU.

Thanks for the tip, Janz. Hopefully I'll be able to get evrything working better without having to sacrifice the ability to look around in cities, but I'll keep it in mind. ;)

Well, if it does get locked, just go over to the Galaxies thread-look for about 163 pages and just go to the last page-but I can tell you, your Ram is your #1 issue. Galaxies takes at least 512 to run it now and with 1 gig, it still lages but not as much.
Make sure you only have SWG running too. Norton's slowed mine down a lot.
Ram, at least, isn't that expensive if you can wait a few days and buy it online.
Go to pricewatch.com and look for what type you need.
I used DDR RaM AND GOT A 512 chip for $36.
Hope to see you back into the family.

Thanks alot, Vader. I was thinking it might be the RAM as well but I wasn't sure how to buy it. Your tips will be a big help. I hope to be back in business soon. Thanks again. ;)

On that note, if any1 else knows any good sites or stores where I can buy RAM for a good price, just gimme a shout.

I just visited pricewatch.com but I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for or how to tell "what kind of RAM" I need. I know, I know, computer illiteracy is a sad thing, my bad. lol

    RAM, definitely.

You should have at least 1GB for good game performance, 1.5-2GB is ideal. :)

Yeah, RAM is really a deciding factor in that game. Also, the game came out June 27, 2003. Trust me on this one, I was waiting for it since early 2002.

Okay, I'm gonna say I'll go with RAM to solve the problem. Thing is, I dunno what kinda RAM I need or where to look for it. I dunno what it looks like, how to use it or where to get it, and I am not a wealthy guy. I went into 'MY COMPUTER' and brought up my 'SYSTEM INFORMATION' but I'm not sure how to figger out what "kind" of RAM I need. all I see with 'RAM' is 256MB RAM under 'computer'.......soooooooooo what am I looking for here, and where do I find it?? Anybody?

I would go to like Best Buy or Circuit City and ask there.
They have a pretty wide selection of RAM there. Go with Kingston (I am pretty sure that it is on of the better kinds out there), granted it might be a little expensive but it is good stuff. Though it probably doesn't matter.

If you get one 256MB 'stick' of RAM you should be fine. But it also depends on your motherboard. You might only be able to support 256MB at a time and also how many physical slots of RAM it has available.

heck, I've been posting for awhile here now and didn't even know about the index. I think there should be a tech support thread on SWG though. Lumping this in general is never going to be reread and we'll just be answering the same questions again and again.
I mean, 163 pages is a little much to expect someone to read to look for ANY answers!

    Git-R-Done.

But my favorite part is how Dajuan edited the first post, but I am thinking that she forgot to lock the thread. =D=

My game is still a bit laggy, and I have:

    Radeon 9800 Pro 256 Mb
1024 Mb of PC 3200 DDR RAM (GIEL)
    Athlon 64 3200+ (overclocked 3.4 Ghz)
    Cable Internet

So really, to run the game smoothly you need a really kick @$$ system.

I have a Amd Athlon 1.53 Ghz, 1024 Ram and a Geforce 5200 128 meg card and I run fine most of the time.
In large cities, everyone gets lag but that's because of the amount of people there.
I went ahead and started a tech support thread and I'll post some hints there that require changing your SWG settings. Those worked for me but I have to look them up.
Give me about 20 minutes and I'll have it posted there.

It doesn't really matter, I spend all my time in space and I don't get any lag there.
