No, this isn't an announcement of a date. :)

Sorry Bill and I couldn't make it to the meeting. Bill was on cheer-up-the-friends-who-got-laid-off-last-week duty, and I needed to be other the other side of the Metroplex later that afternoon.

Well, we received our copies of the two books WEG produced for Star Wars Live Action Adventures, and they're not half bad.

But, while we're in the planning stages, I've got some questions to ask of the group.

    1. Light-contact or no-contact?

A light contact system would use padded sticks (PVC or kite spar) for lightsabers, and probably NERF-type weapons for blasters (or possibly water pistols, if it's hot and everyone agrees. :D). You tap each other enough for the other person to know they've been hit, but not enough to hurt.

A no-contact system would involve hand signals, dice, or cards to determine whether or not you hit the other person in combat.

Even if we end up using a light-contact system for most things, we'll also come up with a no-contact system as well. Wielding a bunch of boffer lightsabers inside is Not a Good Idea, in my opinion.

    2. Would you mind using dice?

Specifically, one 6-sided die per person. This is what the base SWLAA system uses. There's now a company that produces these little electro-dice that will give you a number when you tap them on something. These would take care of the two main problems I had with dice (the need for a flat surface, and the inability to read them in the dark), so I wouldn't mind going that route. We've also got some ideas for a diceless method, so this can go either way.

    3. What time period?

We were leaning towards the Prequel Trilogy, but the Classic Trilogy would also be good. I'd like to stay away from the New Republic, since I haven't read any of those books. (Should I don asbestos underwear for that statement? ;) )

Ok, that's enough for a start. Comments and questions equally welcome.

    Thanks for the info, Carmen!

For the benefit of those of us who may be unfamiliar with it, could you tell us a little more about what a LARP is ?[face_plain]

Do I need to have a costume ?[face_plain]

And is a Jar Jar mask an acceptable accessory ?[face_plain]

    Appreciate it! :)

A LARP, for those of you who don't know, is a Live Action Role Playing game. It's something like a tabletop RPG, except instead of rolling the dice to see if you snuck past those stormtroopers on the way to the shield generator, you actually sneak past them, and if they don't see you, you made it.

It's rather like those games of "cops and robbers" you played as kids, except there are a few rules to avoid those "Bang! You're dead!" "No I'm not! You missed!" sorts of arguments.

Costumes are generally worn, although they don't need to be elaborate or expensive. Strictly speaking, they aren't required, but they are fun.

A Jar-Jar mask as an accesory? :) Are you talking about wearing one to show that you're playing a Gungan, or wearing one on your belt to show that you've killed a Gungan? I can see both as acceptable uses.

I'm sure light contact will work for most everyone. I'm not familiar with the rules for dice...what ever works. :D

I think the prequel trilogy will be best. I'll either be a jedi-type or smugler character.

Another idea if you use the dice system would be to put the dice in some of those toy dispenser capsules (you know, those things you get out of those machines in the supermarkets) one or two dice can fit in one quite easily. It would be a lot easier to invest in several of them than a bunch of electronic dice.
