    I want to know what you guys think about where GL got names for different things/characters of starwars. For example:
    Vater in German=father (just replace "t" w/ a "d" and you have "Darth Vader/Father"
    Darth=Dark?
    Luke S.=Lucas
    Luke=luminous, pale ("Luminous beings are we..."-Yoda)
    Maul=destruction
    Rancor= Bitter, long-lasting resentment; deep-seated ill will. (Perhaps what Jabba felt when he sent people to the rancor pitt)
    Sidious=sly/deceptive
    Endor=place in book of Samuel in Old Testament of the Bible where King Saul consulted a witch

    Have any other suggestions for meanings of SW names?

    Skywalker Ranch came after Star Wars.

    EDIT: Posted a bit too late. On another note, though. Sidious isn't a real word. It's Insidious. George just took out the prefix.

    ok ok sorry about that one. here are somemore suggestions:
    Hoth= a blind god; misled by Loki he kills Balder by throwing a bough of mistletoe
    Coruscant= Giving forth flashes of light; glittering. (Planet is very bright as seen from space)
    Force=A mixture of Hindu,Buddhism,Christianity, and various others.
    Lightsaber=sword made of light(obviously)
    Sith=peace in Irish language of Gaelic (odd isn't it?)
    Obi= A species of sorcery, probably of African origin
    Wan=To become pale(perhaps when anakin turns to the dark side)
    Dexter=from the root of ambidexterous; perhaps because he can use all of his hands skillfully to cook :)

    Actually, yes, I feel all of these are not coicidence, but in fact very much on purpose

    One of the podracers is gasgango, if you take the second g out it reads Gas and Go, which is a racing term of sorts.

    And Tim Zahn made up Coruscant

    Zahn didn't make up Coruscant, he chose it from a list of names. He was just the first one to coin the term to the Imperial capital.

    GL may have taken "Endor" from the Holy Bible. The Bible mentions a land called "Endor" a few times. But I don't know what similarites they have. He may have just used the name. I heard somewhere that there is still a group of witches called the "Witches of Endor" that some Israelites still even sin and go ask for advise, but not sure if it is true.

    Some scriptures that mention Endor...

    Joshua 17:11
    1 Samuel 28:7

    Check out Psalms 83:10 - "perished" hmmm...
    -------------------------------------------
    Which perished at Endor: they became as dung for the earth. (Whole Chapter: Psalm 83 In context: Psalm 83:9-11)

    Endor is where the Empire fell, so maybe that's it.

    It's been the counter arguement for 'George takes EU ideas' for a long time. I read it on the AOTC or Literature boards years back.

    I don't know if the entire list was revealed. I believe Had Abbadon (sp?) was another choice.

    Basically, that's a misunderstanding- I've seen it countless times in EU debates on canon and such, but no legitimate source exists for the information. Zahn came up with the name himself, and when Lucas decided to include the galactic capital in the SE's and then in the Prequels he decided not to conflict with Zahn's book (and for other reasons, I'm sure) and use "Coruscant" as the name of the planet.

    "Had Abbadon" was one of the names originally thought of by Lucas when he began writing the Saga, as the name of the galactic capital in the center of the galaxy- it was also originally a lava planet (as the place where many of the scenes in RotJ would have taken place), as the "city-planet" aspect was also an idea of Zahn's, taken from the early draft ideas to make an Imperial capital that was more "city than natural planet". ;) :)

    Ken Kenobi- And you have a nice day ;)

    On a lot of other threads people have posted that Vader means father in Dutch. I wouldn't know, I don't speak Dutch, but with the number of people saying it, its probably true.
    Padme means lotus in Sanskrit.
    A long time ago I heard something about Yoda or Yedi meaning something like "wise one" in some language, I think Yiddish, but that was years ago.
    I always took Maul to mean, well, maul. As in "Aaaagh, I've been mauled by a bear!"
    Calimari is squid.
    A Mace is a blunt, spikey object for bashing things... :p
