CNN is reporting that the "original" Star Wars films are going to be available in the fall.

Is this still going to be the Special Edition version of the films?

Actually, I think that it will be the special editions released on DVD, but Im not 100% positive on that.

Until the official site confirms it, I will not believe it. I have a feeling that the OT will not be released on DVD until 2006.

Yeah, I just read an article on EW.com that says it will be the Special Editions and not the original versions. They said that GL wanted to release his true visions of the OT, and the SE's were his "true visions".

    Oh...and it says it's coming out Sept. 21st, 2004.

Lucas himself has confirmed a September 2004 release date.

The official site has already confirmed that the OT is coming out Sept 21.

This belongs in the Classic Trilogy forum.

    Here's what I don't quite get:

"We are currently in the process of restoring and remastering all three titles for the DVD release, so we're still working on details of the marketing strategy," Ward said. "But I believe that it is safe to say that it will receive tremendous exposure across all media."

They've "restored" and "remastered" both the "original" originals (for a VHS box set) and the SEs (for theatrical release).

What's there to "restore" in the SEs? (Or, for that matter, in the originals?)

(Is this code for "updating" a la more "special edition" changes?)

And does this really belong in another forum? Sorry, I'm not programmed for etiquette and protocol. :p

Maybe they're just sticking that stuff they took out the first time around.

The Biggs/Luke Tatooine stuff and such.

They should not put back in the Biggs stuff. The film has always, and SHOULD always start with the DROIDS. The Biggs scene breaks that up. Sure, put it in the Deleted Scenes, but there's no way it should end up in the final versions of the film.

Fixed up lightsabers would be nice, though.

Fixing the lightsabers would be beyond sweet.

You might want to try this thread, which is located in the Original Trilogy forum. :)

Offical: Star Wars DVD FAQ and discussion thread

oops, hit the post button by mistake. I was going to also say that, the last I heard, the DVDs were going to be just like the SE videotape boxset (with added extras on 1 or 2 discs).

A lot like the Indiana Jones Box set. :)

I don't think the Luke/Biggs scene will be included.
I've heard that in ANH Bail Organa will be on Alderaan. Also there will be a scene of Palpatine disbanding the Senate.
In TESB, Ian Mcdirmand(sp) will now be the Emperor talking with Vader, replacing the old woman and the monkey eyes that were originally filmed.

I heard of a few more changes that I can't think of right now.

This may be a stupid question, but is Jimmy Smits playing Bail Organa in those scenes ?

If the rumors are true then yes. Of course he'd be wearing makeup so he can look 20 years older.

Yeah, fixing the lightsabers would definitely be sweet. But if I were lucas I'd go the extra mile and reshoot some of the lightsaber duels -- especially OB1/Vader's -- so they can at least look as fast-paced as those in the PT's (the only thing I actually like about the PT, to be honest.) Just recreate some of the Death Star sets, add in some CGI or Nick Gillard-trained stutn doubles and, voila, you have a 27 year old stilted-looking lightsaber duel fixed! Reshooting the Emperor scene in ESB with Ian McDiarmid shouldn't be much of a stretch, but it'd certainly be much welcome, to keep the face and voice of the Emperor seamless throught the whole series.

wow, working yourselves up over things they havent confirmed yet [face_plain] thats really stupid. and they ARE his movies, he can do whatever he wants to them. if i were him id replace ESB with 3 hours of a camera, focused on a single jar of mayo.
