Star Wars: The High Republic: The Acolyte: The Mandalore, the Naboo, and the Statue

It is a hundred years before the Rise of the Empire...

While mysterious shadows work, a single flashpoint at the edge of the Republic threatens to ignite.

The Gungan-Naboo War has been a local affair for the most part, and in line with Republic policy, no matter how bloody the conflict, the Jedi Order is expected to stand down if it is an internal matter. But recently, word has been that Mandalore the Hammerborn, the war criminal who burned down Ithull decades ago, has been sighted, hired to intervene in the conflict, creating a galactic element to the war... and a reason for the Jedi to intervene.

Jedi Master Heor Chall has been tasked with leading a task force of Consular-class cruisers and Judicials into the fray.

You may be a Jedi on the team, a Judicial who serves in the small peacekeeping forces of the Republic, a Naboo Guard, a Mandalorian, a mercenary, or even a Gungan warrior defending your home...

What is to happen here, contemporaneous to the events of the Acolyte, and decades after the High Republic Era was at its height, may yet spell certain doom for the future...

THE GUNGAN-NABOO WAR

Naboo.





A simple world, capital of the Chommel Sector, a region in the Mid Rim. With three moons, it was just another planet in another system in another sector - to distant Coruscant, anyway.

Nominally part of the Galactic Republic, Naboo had stood mostly apart since the Nihil Crisis decades ago, owing to several bruising battles fought when the Jedi failed to prevent the Nihil from absorbing the planet into their territory.

It had originally been colonised by colony ships sent from the Core World of Grizmalt, a world of royalty that includes the Sunrider, Tasia and Grissmath dynasties, known for sending ships as far and wide as the now-irradiated Meridias, the fabled lost world of Renatasia, and of course, Naboo. The rulers of Naboo could trace their lineage back at least four thousand years, all the way to the monarch that had sent her daughter away from the Core.

They were royal blood.

Ancient, in-fact.

The humans had always known about the Gungans, the natives of the planet, but they kept to their underwater cities, and the Naboo kept to their cities.

It isn't entirely clear how the war began.

But, eighteen years ago, it did.

Whether it was a Naboo team that infringed upon a Gungan underwater city while drilling for plasma -

Whether it was a Gungan General that acted unilaterally and slew a group of Naboo divers -

Whether it was the terrorist bombing of Theed by anarchists who wanted to hand Naboo back to the Gungans -

Whether it was a Royalist false-flag operation designed by the Six Houses to generate sympathy -

Who knew.

What was known, that for years the plains outside of the Cities had been an area requiring patrol.

That the war had seen several underwater cities destroyed, but Otoh Gunga had never been found.

That the war had seen several Naboo cities flattened, but Theed had resisted assault following the formation of the Naboo Starfighter Corps.

But even now, the first city founded by the colonists, Dee'ja Peak, is threatened...

It is yet another day in the long-running war...

... and yet, everything will soon change.

THE GALACTIC REPUBLIC

Nine hundred years ago, the Jedi-Sith War ended with the recapture of Coruscant.

Skirmishes continued for decades after, until the Battles of Ruusan destroyed the surviving Sith Lords.



The Ruusan Reformations thereafter reorganised the Galactic Republic for a safe and secure society - instead of millions of unmanageable sectors, the galaxy was reorganised into 1024 regional sectors, with as many Senators expected to attend the capital on Coruscant.

The military was abolished, and the Jedi Order given a constitutional role in the Judicial Department, supported by Judicials and a variety of medium capital ships. Limitations were placed on warships, and the six hundred meter vessel became the workhorse of the galaxy. Larger vessels had to be reduced in armament, such as the Trade Federation freighters, or given severe hyperdrive restrictions, such as Kuati battlecruisers.

Ten thousand Jedi now patrol the Galactic Republic, the largest it has ever been, incorporating almost all of the charted stars, and peace has largely reigned for nine hundred years. But there have been crises. Six hundred years ago, the warrior clans of Mandalore were excised, driven to the furthest reaches of the galaxy and their home sector ruled instead by pacifists. Three hundred years ago, Corellia seceded and fell into a thirty-year civil war. In the last century, the Nihil Crisis, the Mandalorian genocide of Ithull and the Dark Jedi Conflict have all occurred.

Public opinion remains concerned that the Jedi are not enough to patrol and increasingly restless society.

Having to be circumspect to avoid an increase in their enemies in the Senate, or more threats arising, the Jedi Council has consolidated control in the hands of one single Grandmaster, and generally withdrew to Coruscant, abandoning more and more satellite academies. Rogue Jedi and bounty hunters enact unorthodox justice, just as likely to be cast as villains by the Senate as heroes.

But now, the architect of the Ithullan Genocide, Mandalore the Hammerborn, has been sighted on Naboo.



An anonymous tip, believed to have been sent by one of the Noble Houses, puts him there.

Barred from intervening in planetary affairs unless they affect other systems, the Jedi have been unable to act until now.

Assembling a team of Jedi, six, led by a single Master, the Order has commanded the Judicials to support the mission to capture the war-criminal with a task force, so as to ensure the Mandalorian does not escape. Supervised by a Senator, and headed by the modern Dreadnaught-class cruiser Mas Ramdar, as well as a flotilla of Consular-class light cruisers, and even a trio of positively ancient Hammerheard-class warships, the Jedi will not accept Mandalore's escape...







This will be brought to an end, once and for all.

A sphere of blue and green hangs below, and for a moment, there it is all.

There is a small amount of orbital traffic.

A freighter here, or there, a few satellites.

Three moons, one close by, one distant, one on the other side of the planet.

A small ship arrives, first, and foremost, darting.

Not a few moments after, other ships arrive.

A Dreadnaught, a trio of Hammerheads, and the red-hulled Consular-class cruisers.

From several of the latter, shuttles launch, carrying Jedi, some of which have not met before now.

From Eriadu came the majority of the cruisers and Jedi, but the Dreadnaught came from distant Coruscant with it's Senator and Jedi Master.

From Belsavis was summoned a solitary Knight named Rowan Organa, and from more distant Xagobah, fresh from a mining dispute, was Deptina Sidvthark.

They were due to meet aboard the Dreadnaught cruiser, in the hangar.

The other four Jedi Knights knew each other, having been stationed together for many months. There were a trio of humans, two Coruscanti, and one Alderaanian, each from aristocratic families. The fourth was a young woman named Neema-Da-Boda, that apparently had a bloodline link to the hero Nomi Sunrider.

Neema was the one who came to greet the shuttle as it brought the two Knights.



Her face was bored.

Aboard the bridge of the Mas Ramdar, they were supposed to have met up. The Eriaduan captain, a young scion of the Tarkin family, had instead command of the ship on his own, not that the military man minded overly. But the Jedi team hadn't even met before now, either. They were quite literally flying the seat of their pants, but then again, there hadn't been a tip about their target for decades...

The Jedi Master, Leor Hal, had kept to himself, opting to meditate rather than meet the Senator before they arrived.

He had no intention of deferring to the advisor, after all.

As such, they met for the first time in the turbolift to the hangar.

The Jedi regarded Bairre Ó Loingsigh with an arch of an eyebrow.

"Senator," he managed, respectfully.

The Palace of Theed.

The seat of government for centuries, serving a monarchy thousands of years old.

Eighteen years ago the Gungan-Naboo War began, before the current Queen was even in power...

But even then, Court was Court, and the noble Houses - the six Great, and twenty Lesser, all had their interplays and schemes and games.

A war simply added more variables to it. Many Lesser Houses had young men and women in the war, and most of the Great Houses had plied various excuses to keep their heirs out of the danger. Paying for a waiver, or base lying about the physical condition of their children, for example. Which in turn weakened the nobles in-question, but temporarily, for a House without a heir was in danger. Send a spare, if you had one!

Today was no different, but there was a newcomer to the Court. A woman had come of age, and as such her hand in marriage - and the opportunity for an alliance between families, and a shift in power, was potential. Houses Veruna and Tapalo held a vice-grip on the Court, and the other Great Houses could not agree long enough to combat it.

Cosinga Palpatine walked his younger sister, Ederlathh, into the room.

She was a beautiful young woman, he knew as much, but he didn't care about such things, even if she wasn't his sibling. They were barely a year apart, but she seemed to look older more often than not, which Cosinga did not mind whatsoever. Better to be underestimated.

His eyes roved the room, looking to who sought to catch his eye, who looked to Veruna and Tapalo for cues, who turned aside entirely.

As they walked, he found Ederlathh's eyes were fixated on a visitor to the Court. Off-worlders were periodically invited by Veruna and Tapalo, who each had a desire to expand the Naboo beyond their small world. There were two here today. One, from distant Nubia, whose family was being wooed to obtain better terms for the chromite yachts that served the monarch, for the man's father had the controlling stake in Nubia Star Drives - Willem Graul. The other was a Bith of some artistry, apparently renowned for also designing personal craft. Veruna had sponsored the Nubian contract, and Tapalo the Bith. Cosinga didn't care for the nonhuman, and so paid no heed.

But Cosinga refocused as they marched up the centre of the Court.

For the Queen was who they had to speak to first.

Indeed, Ederlathh's first day in Court was so much more important than the business of Veruna and Tapalo. The off-worlders hadn't been introduced to the Queen yet, for that would have been an offense to House Palpatine that even Veruna and Tapalo could not afford to commit.

As such, Cosinga bowed over his arm, and Ederlathh curtsied fully, micrometer perfect.

Dee'ja Peak, a scenic city nestled in the Gallo Mountains, was atop the eponymous peak, so named the same.

It's strategic position within the mountainous region meant it was difficult to assail, but also difficult to patrol by officers.

As such, Naboo Starfighters made the turns, checking crevasses, nooks, and crannies.

Bravo Flight, commanded by Captain Magenta, flew the ultra-modern Z-95 starfighter.



Though Magenta would have much preferred to have home-built Naboo designs, something she had sketched up called the N-1 design, but there was no desire to create local fighters when credits were sufficient. The war was a past-time to Theed, and no major cities had fallen.

Among his three wingmates was Bravo Two, Ryan Bluth, and Bravo Three and Four. Three was Mercu Panaka, who had thus far prevented Ryan from interacting with Four, Fen Aneleh, a grossly naive young man. But Magenta didn't mind the positivity. Starfighter combat was clean, distant - unlike those in the Royal Security Force who had to skirmish with Gungans on foot or under speeder, in the plains.

"Watch that turn, Two," Magenta snapped, as they dove through a particularly sharp set of rocks.

Mountain Base

There were a few unmapped waterways on Naboo, and the Gungan's didn't have a monopoly on them.

Clearly new paths had been one of the Gungan Army's roles, taking Bongo subs around the planet to prepare new paths to attack the surface dwellers.

A Bongo transport was presently bringing Gungan artillery to a cove recently discovered in the mountains of Gallo, which they had carefully, and quietly expanded.

Among them was a brand new catapult that could hurl large plasma balls into the sky, and finally turn the tide on the Naboo flying devices.

In the watery cave, illuminated only by the blue of the Gungans technology, they came.

Not just Gungan warriors, commanded by Bombard General Tarpals, but also one of the higher ups.



There was a noise in the distance, though - Naboo flying ships. This was the first time they had risked bringing energy balls into the cove, so it was likely they would be discovered.

General Tarpals ignored Tacca Nass for the moment, and pointed at the Gungans present, among them Crepaud.

He gestured to the cave opening.

"Wheelsa that out! Wind it! Prepare for a fight!"

Mercenaries beget mercenaries.

Mandalore the Hammerborn knew that.

But he didn't need to worry about that on Naboo.

The Gungans could hardly hire a counter-army, could they?
