I know many people say that widescreen you see more but ever since I heard about the black bars cutting off the film I stpped buying them. How is the widescreen trilogy and do you prefer one over the other? Does it really matter????

Even though the pictures a bit smaller in the Widescreen, you do get to see all of it.

With Fullscreen, you're losing almost a third of the picture.

    No contest for me.

It all depends on personal taste and size of TV.
If you have a large TV, then buy the widescreen.
Then it just comes down to what you peronally like. I have a small TV, I would rather have widescreen and like to see the entire screen (especially with Star Wars and epics similar to it.)

I don't see a problem with my DVDs. Sure there are black bars, they don't really bother me.

Widescreen no matter what. FOOLSCREEN is a pitiful version of the movie. If you want the full picture, get widescreen. There's many comparisons all over the place.

Widescreen is the way to go. Of course, like someone pointed out, if you have a very small TV, you might want to get fullscreen. But since I have a 28 inches screen, it's wide.

IMO, the size of your TV screen should have nothing to do with your choice between widescreen and pan&scam. I've seen the OT DVDs on a portable DVD player with a 3.5" screen (now *that* is small), and it looked great - I even stayed and watched ANH for a while in the shop.

Here in the UK, you can't even buy fullscreen movie DVDs - an excellent idea.

The black bars don't "cut off the film" if a movie is filmed in a widescreen format like Star Wars is. The bars are there because there simply isn't any film to fill it in, nothing is missing.

On Fullscreen they actually do cut off the sides of the movie, so you miss quite a bit.

Widescreen, no contest. I'd rather see the whole picture than just part of it. And really, the black bars aren't distracting. Once you start watching the film, you forget about them.

Pan and Scan (Fullscreen) is film butchery. Enough said.

Yes, Widescreen is prefered over Fullscreen, I think everyone on this thread almost have answered that question.

Widescreen. You get to see the Tiefighter pilot fly out of the Tiefighter in ESB.

Wow, holy moly. o_0 I own the special edition VHS in flat screen, and I never realized how much of the picture I lost. I'll definitely make sure to get widescreen when I pick up the DVDs.

Although i can sympathise with the black line business, getting the DVDs in widescreen only after ever seeing the movies in full screen is like watching a new movie. There is so much extra stuff you get to see :)

Agree that it depends on personal preference. For me, there is no substitute for widescreen, even though my TV is 4:3 aspect ratio. In fact I get annoyed watching any movie broadcast on TV modified by pan & scan because I feel like I'm not seeing the real deal - sometimes I'd even rather rent the original on DVD just for that reason. E.g. Tried watching the original "Hustler" on broadcast TV recently but in the scenes showing the pool shots you couldn't even see the balls go in the pockets properly. With the Star Wars DVDs in particular, as the visuals make up so much of the overall experience, I think that watching them in full screen (and therefore losing out on about 1/3 of the visuals) is compromising too much. I can totally relate to JediMasterGuff about still wanting to watch things in widescreen irrespective of screen size.

    I bought it in widescreen.

If they're available, I always choose the widescreen version when buying a DVD.

Hmm...when I was (much) younger I asked my mother for the fullscreen VHS boxset for Christmas. For some reason I had a real dislike of widescreen. It was a few months later that I realised how much of the films I was missing out on, and I ended up going and buying the widescreen versions.

You could say I paid the price for my lack of vision...;)

Exactly the same thing happened to me, back when I was like 12 and viewed widescreen as the spawn of Satan. I thought that widescreen was merely fullscreen that had been stretched a lot and had black bars superimposed over it :p

You know what's weird? My uncle has the OT on VHS (don't know exactly which release... some THX one, I believe) and it was a set (were they even available as single movies?) - but while ANH and RotJ were widescreen, TESB was fullscreen!

I never owned a fullscreen version. If it was fullscreen, it was on TV (and they don't do even that anymore).

What about France, Spain, Italy, etc.? Do they still offer fullscreen DVDs?

******* Brits, living the life of kings... :_|

Now that I know of how wrong and immoral puke-and-scam is, I find it blisteringly impossible to watch movies on TV(With the exception of Sci-Fi and TCM) now with a clean conscience. So much for that Starz! subscription.

I wouldn't say it ruins the movie experience to go flat screen, though. It wasn't until I started buying DVDs that I picked up widescreen and realized how much of the picture I was missing out on. (And when I was a kid, the black boxes annoyed me - for some reason, widescreen always made me feel like I was actually missing something since it made me eyes feel claustrophobic.) Yet watching in flat screen never made the SW movies any less of an experience.

I guess I would say you get used to it. After awhile, your eyes just adjust to the screen and focus on the middle.

You can't buy fullscreen DVDs in Region 4 (Australia and New Zealand) either. I think Region 1 is the only region that has them.
