I'm researching X-wing: Alliance. What are the Authority IRD, Planetary, Pinook, Pursuer, R-41 Starchaser, Razor, Supa and Toscan Fighters like?

r-41's are very tasty, IMO, shields are just a bit too light though

The pictures are correct, but those rpg stats are just made up. Although they're just game mechanics (and therefore not to be treated as canon), I think someone should post these fighters' game stats, so we can get some idea about how well they're supposed to perform.

I LOVE R-41's and don't feel that they get enough attention. They're considered pirate vessels, but they're one tough ship. Faster than some models of X-wings, plus the addition of Ion Cannons. I've liked them since the crack in X-Wing vs. TIE Fighter that allowed you to fly them... Whenever I write fan-fics, the main character I've developed for the SW universe always flys an R-41.

There were R-41s (plus Z-95s and T-wings) in Mysteries of the Sith. I thought it was so cool.

    :)

Its the companion missions for Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight. It features Mara Jade and Kyle Katarn.

Plus some good stuff like an Interdictor, Delta Dx-9s, T-wings, and a whole host of other X-wing ships. The R-41s and T-wings are part of a pirate fleet, IIRC.

Thanks for the pics. I heard you can shift shield power forward and backward too, as well as adjust your engines. How fun would that be? Wouldn't have minded full bow shields when head to heading those pesky Thyferran Interceptors in Rogue Squad 64! I'm thinking of getting this, but I don't want outdated graphics.

More T-wings and R-41s in more places...

Hint, hint to comics people and LFL supermen.

At the highest resolution, they're hardly outdated Excellence.

And if you're just a graphics nut, you'll miss some of the best EU games out there, namely TIE Fighter and its sequels.

The graphics are O.K. nothing that will distract from the gameplay.

You can also DL some updated models from www.xwaupgrade.com I'm not sure if they affect the story missions or not though.

XWA is a sweet game. I really should reinstall it sometime.

The amount of flyable ships in teh game are impressive as well. I was always fond of the Tie fighters though.

I'm suprised at the lack of reference to such fighters as these throughout the novels. The IRD were first mentioned back in the old Han Solo novels I believe. They were the mainline fighter used by the CSA forces. Past that, I dont think I've ever heard from them.

Headhunters have been in several sources, but I'm having a hard time coming up with sources for alot of these other fighters. Cloakshapes were first in Dark Empire, hmmmm. Thats about the best I can do. the R-41 might have been in Jedi Knight as a model at some point, I forget really.

How flyable are they with keyboard controls? You get instant menu and features like Jedi Outcast, but it can get heated when I lure 6 Reborn at once in a Yavin courtyard.

You'll be hard pressed to gun turret in KOTOR on a laptop. So, how hard is it to fly these X-wing: Alliance ships without a console control pad?

You don't want a console control bad for XWA. It sucks trying to fly that way and then use the keyboard as well. It's blasted near impossible to do with just a keyboard. What you actually need is a joystick - you can get a decent (though not great) stick for about $25 (here in the US). A good, solid one will run you more than that; I paid $80 for a good stick and throttle combo, but a stick is plenty for your purposes, probably. And the twenty bucks is well worth it.

Most of those ships are garbage in comparison to the Rebel and Imperial craft. The only ones that are even close to good are the Toscan and Planetary fighters. The rest are just too weak or slow.

Though the R-41 stays consistently weak throughout :)

The graphics ain't bad considering it's age...

    [image=http://xwing.wz.cz/img/17a.jpg]

About the level of Jedi Outcast, I'd say. If you want awesome graphics though you can hit xwaupagrade.com and replace about a third of the ships with much better looking ones...

Glad, isn't that first pic from XvT, not XWA? If so, the graphics are considerably better in Alliance, Ex. And you *must* get it, it's too good not to - it's like the KotOR of flight sims. If you're having joystick issues, just pick up a cheap one from a second-hand computer store or whatever, it works.

Could be from X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter. I got it from here, so the guy who runs the site could have been mistaken.

But yeah, XWA is definitely worth getting.

EDIT: That site also has sample screenshots for your perusal: http://xwing.wz.cz/en_xwa_sc.htm

The default graphics aren't fantastic, but they're good if you consider that the game is six years old. Again, I highly recommend checking out xwaupgrade.com if you ever get the game; I've had the graphics from there for a long time and they're a thousand times better than the standard ones.

i've never ever had any problem with the standard graphics, the Selu always seemed smooth, if one thing that might need updating, its the textures on platforms or whatever, excellence, i demand a name change due to your lack of it for not having this game already :p

You can also get hold of an updated version of tiefighter and xwing (with graphics supporting 3d accelerators) and they look like xwing versus tie. please get them :)

Just FYI, I think the Authority IRD was originaly in Han Solo at Star's End, published in 1979. Han and some outlaw techs fight a bunch of them in Z-95 Headhunters. I think they were described as being flat and winglike, contrary to in the game.

The XWA IRDs are the same as those in the Corporate Sector Sourcebook, IIRC. Don't know what the original concept of them would have looked like, but I don't mind what we got. Of course, the HSaSE comic shows them as TIEs... [face_plain]
