well, likely the simplest explenation is that he was high when he wrote the lyrics.

however, i do love the song. very pleasant.

that said, it's about love and peace mainly, seeing things bloom in the dessert of hate and things like that. at least, that's what i gather from it.

 

It is supposed to be a poem. So, nobody understands it fully except for the writer. Make your own interpretation.

Sting liked it so much when he heard rough translation, that he had a real translation made and made that into the song.
