I'm surprised there hasn't been a Kirby thread on these boards before. So I thought I'd rectify that!

Demo for the new Kirby and the Forgotten Land just dropped a few days ago. Anyone gotten a chance to check it out? I played through it, and it's definitely Super Kirby Odyssey (not that this is a bad thing of course). It's very weird playing Kirby in three dimensions, but it works. At least in the early part of the game the demo lets you play, it's surprisingly linear for something so obviously inspired by Super Mario Odyssey--lots of invisible walls. Hopefully as the game progresses, it'll open up and let you go off the beaten path and explore more. I'm definitely looking forward to building up that Waddle Dee town when the main game comes out (Colony 6 vibes!) and upgrading Kirby's copy abilities.

Last year I played through the first six games in the main series and wrote up my thoughts on them in the last game you beat thread (I probably should've started this thread back then). Having recently watched an LP of Kirby Star Allies--which is basically a huge love letter to all the previous Kirby games--I'm hankering to go back. So I'm playing through those early games again, though this time it'll be on the Wii U Virtual Console (yay save states!). Then after Kirby 64, I'll continue on with Kirby & The Amazing Mirror and Squeak Squad. I also watched an LP of the former, and it looks like a really interesting take on the series--the only Kirby game to be in the Metroidvania style. I know literally nothing about the latter, however, other than there are mouse characters. It's kind of in the title.

I haven’t played a Kirby game since the SNES, but I’ve been extremely hyped for Forgotten Land ever since the reveal trailer. Super Kirby Odyssey? Shut up and take my money.

Looking forward to Forgotten Land, though I figure I’ll likely play Mario Odyssey itself first before I do so. This does remind me that I need to circle back to going deeper in Planet Robobot on 3DS, which is a fun, if still fairly unchallenging game.

Actually did play a fair amount of the SNES Dream Land 3 game as the blue Player 2 character as co-op with a friend’s child. Getting the different abilities plus riding the animals gives it a Kirby-meets-DKC vibe which is fun- and the forgiving 2D platforming (plus floating) made it an easier game for her to get into with vs 3D platformers and the more challenging Mario 2D gameplay.

Planet Robobot and Extra Epic Yarn are on my “maybe I’ll check these out” list that I may explore post Forgotten Land. My only issue with Mario platformers are the really bad times I have when I try to 100% them. :p If Kirby, on the other hand, is a leisurely endeavor, I can imagine enjoying those quite a bit.

Anyone else played Forgotten Land yet?

I just finished up the first “world,” and am having a blast so far. The mission objectives are a lot of fun and add some replayability to the levels. 100% so far with the exception of beating the first boss without taking damage. I’ll wait until I have some upgraded abilities before I work on that.

The target times on some of the bonus levels are a little strict, but thankfully beating those doesn’t count towards your overall completion, just gives you an additional 50 coins.

I was expecting to find a thread devoted to the art of Jack Kirby. Instead we get Kirby the vacuum cleaner and Kirby the video game character.

Waiting until after Celebration before making any major game purchases (with possible exception to LEGO Skywalker Saga).

So, saw an article yesterday about how HAL Labs confirms that there is no official Kirby series timeline, but that certain story elements do carry over between titles, to give them flexibility in the storytelling.

That, of course, lead to me looking into fan-made timeline analysis. They are interestingly complex (especially since Kirby lore is apparently deeper than one would expect), but it's pretty awesome that things can be connected in a manner even if it isn't as straight forward as Metroid timeline, the majority of the Zelda timelines or the first decade of the Mario series, etc.

This one tries to fit everything together:

While this one focuses on a more linear approach to the main platformers and only the side games that add anything to the lore:

Both of them are 3-4 years old now, though, so there's probably been a half dozen Kirby games released since then not accounted for. but, still, a fascinating foundation.

With the recent release of Kirby's Dream Buffet and the announcement of Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe, I thought it was about time to bump this thread.

Off and on throughout the past few months, I've been playing through all the main series Kirby games in order. I had played the first six last year (for the first time) but got tired and quit. So this year I started at the original Kirby's Dream Land again (this time on Virtual Console instead of the Kirby's Dream Collection compilation). I rolled through the original six, then later titles I'd never played before. Most recently I just finished up Kirby: Planet Robobot, and only now do I understand why this game gets so much hype. It's not just that it has Kirby controlling a mech for its main gimmick--but that this mech also has copy abilities! Also, the stage design at its best in this game. Triple Deluxe was good and all, but by the time the development team got to Planet Robobot, it feels like they were more experienced and able to bring out their best ideas. And the sub-games were actually good for a change!

Anyway, I think at this point it edges out Kirby Super Star Ultra as my favorite, but only by the tiniest of margins. The two are practically tied, and I'm comfortable referring to them both as my two favorite Kirby games (so far). I'm excited to start on Kirby Star Allies this weekend, but here's my personal rankings of the series thus far:

    1. Kirby: Planet Robobot
    2. Kirby Super Star Ultra
    3. Kirby Super Star
    4. Kirby's Return to Dream Land
    5. Kirby: Triple Deluxe
    6. Kirby & The Amazing Mirror
    7. Kirby's Adventure
    8. Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards
    9. Kirby: Nightmare in Dream Land
    10. Kirby: Squeak Squad
    11. Kirby's Dream Land 3
    12. Kirby's Dream Land 2
    13. Kirby's Dream Land

How would you all rank the games in this series you've played?
