Getting a new 2.8 Ghz Dell next week, but need to put in a good Firewire card for DV editing in Premiere 6.5. Can anyone give suggestions or vouch for a good Firewire card for a Dell running XP and Premiere? Don't want to be posting any of those "Finished my masterpiece but can't export through Firewire" threads.

    Thanks-
    Jeremy

i have NEVER had a problem with any FireWire card. I have used many many different ones. Just get the cheapest one. Of course make sure it has more than 1 port on it so you an plug mutliple devices in. Right now I am running a Texas Instruments board, works just great.

Is price really the only thing to worry about? Any cards to avoid? And what about drivers? Any pitfalls to watch out for? Sorry for all the questions, but firewire has always just worked for me on my Mac- just want to make sure the PC will be as smooth... and please don't turn this into a Mac vs. PC thread...

I've heard that Belkin firewire cards are supposed to be the best. But I can't vouch for that, since I've never had one. But it looks like you can get one from ebay for around $30.

Already having the necessary software I just bought a generic card for about $60 Australia (about US$30). I have no idea what brand it is, but I've never had a problem with it.

You best bet would probably be to do a search for firewire card reviews.

I have 2 belkin cards, and they've both been great. $40/ea and no problems under either Windows or Linux.

I bought the ADS Pyro platinum from http://www.videoguys.com. Comes with *full* Premiere 6.5 and a firewire card for $259 (not to mention some other goodies as well). Can't beat that. I have not used it with XP though - just 98 and 2000.

When choosing a Firewire card make sure it states that it's OCHI compatable. Check the original manufacture site if the website selling the card doesn't state it. Supposedly it will help with compatability across the board with the different standards.

I bought this Western Digital firewire card back in december for $26 from thenerds.net. Comes with 6' cable and Ulead DV software if you don't have Premiere or anything like that. Works perfectly!! PC & MAC compatable.

    Here's the link: http://www.thenerds.net/productpage.asp?c=52&pn=330168&sd=&d=&m=WESTERN+DIGITAL

Thanks for all of the advice everyone. I went to CompUSA and they had an Adaptec FireConnect 4300 for 29 bucks after rebate. It has 3 ports which have the 6 pins on each port to power those external firewire devices (like the iPod, etc) and it is fully OHCI-compliant. Worked like a charm in XP with Premiere 6.5. No drivers needed.
