After watching a clip or two ROTJ, a detail that I've dwelled on as I've been reading CN2 has been the height of the Sullustan race- they're described as being really short humanoids, to the point where Den's been described as being able to be carried in the arms of other characters as if child-sized.

Yet the Sullustans we see in ROTJ strike me as being about regular height or taller (look at the 2:30 mark here).

Now, obviously there can be height ranges within a species, but it strikes me odd that the best known examples of a species are an exception to the rule in terms of height. Has this been addressed somewhere?

Yeah, and if you look at him in the cockpit, you can see he sits as high as Lando. Fundamentally, I think it comes down to the size of his head. It's a huge, round head -- the proportions are those of a baby's head. Nunb looks like he has the build of a child, and people automatically parse that as "small stature" -- so you're left with a counterfactual impression when you're not actively analyzing the film looking for height comparisons.

But seriously though, CN is a bad example since Reaves seems to consistently underestimate Sullustan dimensions, more than other sources. It bugged me too.

The shortness of Sullustans has been established since at least WEG and isn't going anywhere, so I guess, as you posit, Den is really short even for the species and Nunb is on the high end of the scale.

that really bothered me when I was reading the X-wing books. When they go into InvsSec, the Sullustans all sound like they are Ewok sized, and I was like, huh? I'm totally with you on this one. Apparently Tien and Nien are just Goliaths;)

Yeah, I noticed that Den is ridiculously short. While the EU has been telling us for a while that Sullustans are shorter than humans, I always had the impression that on average they were about 3/4 of a head shorter. A noticeable difference, yes, but sometimes Den is described as about waist height IIRC...

    To complicate matters even MORE...

Nien Nunb appears to fit just fine into the copilot seat during ROTJ. He's on the same level as Lando throughout their scenes.

Now switch to NJO- There are numerous comments about how the copilot chair dwarfs Leia when she takes the position after Chewbacca's death. Han even replaces it to a normal size seat during the war because the crash webbing isn't tight enough to protect Leia.

So somehow Nien Nunb (apparently rather small) fits into a seat that was too large to fit the average size human adult?

Granted, the seat may have been switched out to accommodate Chewbacca's size after the Battle of Endor, but I don't remember seeing any mention, unless it was during the overhaul in BFC.

So Nien Nunb must be a giant among Sullustans, because he fits comfortably in a seat that was too large for Leia 25 years later.

I don't care that he's the same height as Lando when sitting down. I want to know how the hell he fit into a Wookiee's chair.

Well... thing is, Chewie's chair wasn't any bigger than Han's until he died, because hamfisted imagery ftw.

But Elora Sund seems only slightly short.

Beolar Bribbs, on the other hand, is only a bit taller than a Gossam.

Let's not forget that Shaquille O'Neal and Danny DeVito are also from the same species; there's probably equal variety among Sullustans.

    The Penguin, actually.

But seriously, I'd put down Sullustans as "shorter on average than humans" with a degree of variance. Maybe Ten, Nien, and Ellora were the Shaqs of their own species.

They're about as tall as an average midget, and like a midget you could just about carry one around with you but they would kick up a fuss if you tried.

I think they've been portrayed as short all the way around. Maybe Nein Nunb was sitting on a booster seat or something.:p Of course he also is about the same height as the humans in the celebration in the Ewok Village as well, so......Maybe he was just tall for his people?

Jae Junn has always come across as smaller to me, as has Den. A dilemma it is [face_thinking]

I actually seem to recall the old Nunb toy from 1983 being shorter than the others......but I don't have it handy, Maybe someone could confirm this?

Well, the Ewok village Sullustan isn't Nien- he's wearing a red flight suit, IIRC, whereas Nien wore civilian-type digs with a vest. So there's at least two tall-to-talllish Sullustans there, and photos of Ten show him to be of average human height too.

I can't imagine they intended that Sullustan to be anyone besides Nien. Do you get up every day and wear the exact same outfit?

Clearly, Sullustans range from .8 - 1.9 m tall, with 1.28 m being the most common height.

In addition, there were originally scenes with at least one Sullustan B-Wing pilot that were cut from the ROTJ, so it was probably intended to be a Sullustan who had flown a fighter in the battle.

It's a guy named Ten Numb. So we have two tallish Sullustans in the primary source. Where in the EU did this Sullustans=short brainbug first pop up?

Say, does anyone know where this image is from? Was there a Sullustan in Jabba's palace? I've never seen him in the film or any background material for that set.

Also, this guy. Were there Sullustans somewhere in the PT as well?

I remember that second picture as a ROTS promo, so I assume that that was a background character.

As for where the sense that they are sort came from? Their proportions make them look shorter than they were in the movies. They have huge heads. While I think the EU preserves the fact that they have big heads, I don't think it is supposed to be as big a difference between them and human heads as ROTJ shows.
