I decided to run the free trial, and after spending 6 hours or so trying to download and update on my laptop (which exceeds minimum requirements), I got into the game and made my character... I was playing a smuggler, so I went through all the Han Solo junk, then crashed to desktop... so I loaded up again and was running fine, got a quest and hopped in a ship and had to fly to some station... I got to the station, requested to dock, and then the nice yellow Star Wars opening credits start running again... so, I hit Esc to skip them, and i got a popup window with good ol' C-3PO asking me if I had fun and if I wanted to buy it now... So I figured I did something wrong, so I tried to go back in again... THIS time, I wasn't at the new station, I was at the very beginning of the game again, but with the XP and items I had collected in the run before... anyone have any idea whats going on? I've played MMO's for years no and I've never had anything like this happen in any other game...

Welcome to the NGE, New Gaming Enhancements. The virus that destroyed SWG for good.

Three words to answer your question: Working as intended.

Sorry, friend. You got screwed by another game breaking bug.

    Kudos!

Aww, are you serious? It said a 10 day trial, not 10 minute trial... I was looking for something SW-ish to play while I'm away at college, since my laptop can't support Battlefront...

I was just about to start this exact same topic. I downloaded the 10-day Free Trial and started off as a smuggler, as soon as I left the station an docked again, the game restarted. It happens every time, it really sucks I know. Just choose a profession where you don't have to leave the station immediately (like a trader or something). At least it will make the demo last a little bit longer...

I want to know right now, should I even bother buying SWG at this point? It would have been great to finally play a SW game where I can truly explore, but I am hearing some really bad things about SOE and the NGE. It might be too late anyway, I already showed my interest and dropped a few hints, so I might be getting it for Christmas.

Man that really sucks losing your trial account because LA screwed up again.

Honostly I've never played Galaxies for any length of time (20 mins at a friends house) so i don't know how good or bad it is from a first hand perspective. However I can tell you this though Galaxies isn't well liked around here. One would imagine that at a SW messegeboard Galaxies would be popular but its not. We have more people who bash/complain about it than we do who enjoy the game for what it is. So judging from them its not a game to get, but people do enjoy it so you may as well. I guess in the end it depends on if you want to take the chance of being one of the few who actually like the game.

I have been playing SWG since launch... and to make a long story short, this is not the game you want to get, even if you are a die-hard SW fan (come to think of it, being a SW fan is all the more reason not to get it).

The game has really, really gone downhill fast since the dreadful NGE. Servers are increasingly deserted, my friends list is largely empty, a lot of guilds have disbanded because everyone left the game... many cities look like ghost towns now. The game is riddled with a never-ending series of bugs, and at this point nobody believes SOE's promises that they are working on fixing them... at best they will fix 10% of all the stuff that's broken and doesn't work.

For most of the last 2 1/2 years, SWG was a game that was frustrating as heck, yet many of us hung in there because at least interacting with other players (many of them SW fans) was fun, the people have always been the best part of the game -- but now as many as 70 or 80% of players have cancelled their accounts, so all that's left is a game that's full of bugs and broken features... The game had serious bugs and broken professions since the very beginning, and SOE largely failed to fix the vast majority of the stuff that didn't work -- this year's "combat upgrade" and "new game enhancements" introduced even more bugs, some of which made the old ones even worse.

The customer service is absolutely dreadful, good luck getting a CSR to actually provide a coherent reply to the majority of the tickets you might have to file to report bugs, and stuff that just doesn't work... the SOE personnel that post on the forums are frequently flippant and condescending towards players... One of the few ones that was nice recently quit or was fired, shortly after the NGE (she had had to work almost around the clock to address the many concerns of SWG fans upset over the NGE).

Jedi used to be a really cool profession, but now it's the weakest combat profession, and it's just a shadow of its former self. Don't be surprised to see high-level Jedi having to use carbines instead of lightsabers in some of the game's toughest dungeons, because the lightsabers are pretty sucky most of the time. The mobs are oftentimes overpowered, to the point that it totally contradicts everything that you say in the movies... most Jedi in the movies could quickly take out several battle droids and SBDs, in this game, you have to click buttons for 1 to 3 minutes to actually kill a single one... there is no force push, or anything like that.

Many of the cool features of the game are also not available to all but the wealthiest players (those with maxed-out in-game bank accounts). If you are a new player and want to get a jetpack or Mandalorian armor... good luck!!! The items needed to make them are not dropping anymore, and nobody at SOE will give a straight answer as to whether or not those components will ever drop again. So unless you can spend 100 million or 500 million credits to acquire some of these items, you are completely out of luck. And that pretty much leaves the game without any high-end content that would be fun to accomplish.

Furthermore, the NGE also broke most of the leveling past level 30 (the maximum now is CL90). Quick leveling, which was a part of the game that many enjoyed, has been made impossible... with the current rates of XP gain, it could take months or years for casual players to level their characters. And since switching profession is no longer possible, if you get tired of your profession then you are out of luck, you will be told that you might as well delete your character...

The game has gone from so-so to terrible and it's getting worse every day... with most people leaving the game like it was a sinking ship, the real question in many player's minds is how long it's going to take before they pull the plug on the game and shut down the servers.
