The director of Godzilla vs Kong, Adam Wingard, will be writing and directing a live-action/animated hybrid film. And, apparently, he's a huge fan. “Nobody on this planet knows or has thought as much about Thundercats as I have,” Wingard said in an interview with Deadline. Reportedly, he is such a fan of the franchise that years after it went off the air, while he was in high school, he hand wrote a 272-page screenplay for a Thundercats movie. A script he still has. So, after Godzilla vs. Kong started to do well, he talked to producers who were in charge the property and things moved on from there. “I saw this as an opportunity to do a new type of fantasy sci-fi spectacle film that people have never seen before,” he said. “It’s got a rich mythology; the characters are fantastic. The colors. I want to do a Thundercats film that takes you back to that ‘80s aesthetic. I don’t want to reinvent the way they look; I want them to look like Thundercats. I don’t want to do it live action, either. I don’t want it to look like Cats, I don’t want those kinds of issues — no disrespect to that director, whom I don’t mean to throw under the bus any more than everyone else has. I want to do a movie you’ve never seen before. A hybrid CGI film that has a hyper real look and somehow bridges the gap between cartoon and CGI. That’s the starting point, and [frequent collaborator] Simon Barrett and I are getting into the script now.” Perfect timing, as I just got these Lair-inspired beauties the other week as a gift (from friends who got themselves the Lion-O and Cheetara styles): The 2011 series was a pretty outstanding update of the franchise that was sadly cut way too short, given its potential and the storytelling doors it was opening. However, having something specifically based on the original 80's version, of course, is most welcome.
Avoiding live action is probably a good idea, difficult to not make the characters look weird. Cats was a bizarre movie and I didn't care much for how Kristen Wiig looked as Cheetah in WW84 The important thing is to use the original series as a template, not the awfulness of ThunderCats Roar. That and Mumm-Ra needs to be terrifying.
Absolutely. If they can't get the creepiness of his transformation sequence right, there's no point. (Side note: I didn't recall some of the freakier, more active Ancient spirits of Evil statue participation in the ritual later in the show, that show up about halfway through that video0
I got so sick of this show I was rooting for Mum-Ra before it was over. Cheetara and Panthro were the most interesting of the Thundercats.
Snarf... I wonder how much of Adam Wingard's Thundercats script that he wrote in high school will make actually make it into the movie. I'm sure much of the inspiration of the film will come from that old high school script. And good for Adam Wingard for getting the job for Thundercats after his well received Godzilla v. King Kong. It's good to know that he doesn't want his Thundercats to be like the Cats movie but rather is looking to "[a] hybrid CGI film that has a hyper real look and somehow bridges the gap between cartoon and CGI," as noted in the opening post of this thread. If Thundercats is as well received as Godzilla v. King Kong, I imagine the Masters of the Universe film won't be too far behind since it's been in production limbo for years.
