I am about to take my first step into a larger world of new canon novels with Tarkin however I am a little apprehensive as I have read the synopsis which states the story leads up to Tarkin taking control of the Death Star. I loved Rogue One and have yet to read Catalyst but since Rogue One included one major scene explain how this happened, surely Tarkin (even with a story group, this was written before Catalyst and Rogue One) has now been slightly contradicted? Can anyone who has seen Rogue One (and read Catalyst) and read Tarkin explain if it has or hasn't been contradicted already. I hope not as I thought having a story group would prevent the issues that the old EU had with continuity.
Honestly, I don't see these things contradicting Tarkin at all, and I've read them all closely. Tarkin and Catalyst even have the same author; when that happens, there's only so much contradiction you're going to get, and no more. Even then, there really wasn't any...
From what I gather by the end of the book Krinnick was being supervised by Tarkin. So by the time the Tarkin novel is supposed to take place (a few years after Catalyst ends) it still fits.
Well, Catalyst takes place before Tarkin. I think there are a couple of passages that indicate this, at least in Catalyst and Tarkin, but don't quote me on that. Also, a good chunk of Tarkin doesn't take place near the Death Star's construction. First, he's summoned to a meeting with the Emperor and upper Imperial military echelon on Coruscant, then his ship, the Carrion Spike is stolen by proto-Rebels and he spends the rest of the novel tracking them down and figuring out who's helping them. Besides, Krennic's main contribution (along with Galen Erso) is to make sure the superlaser is ready, while Tarkin is more concerned about the station overall (the structure). So, there's really no contraction to speak of. Besides, Krennic is so beneath Tarkin's notice that it's no surprise the Grand Moff doesn't pay him any heed in the novel.
Tarkin and Vader have already had missions together as of Tarkin as well, though. The Legends version of those missions were featured in Dark Lord, also written by James Luceno and still part of his own 'headcanon,' if you will.
Yeah they had missions together prior to the Tarkin novel but I think the Tarkin novel was just where they were able to work closely together. Catalyst takes place from 22BBY-17BBY I believe while Tarkin takes place in 15BBY.
I don't think the two contradict. Tarkin in many ways is in an origin story and then depicts how high he is in the Imperial structure. Jedi Princess when you said Tarkin and Vader having missions I just imagined a buddy cop book of them.
