I'm watching it right now, and I realized something. I don't think anywhere in the movie do they mention the name Tatooine. Not once, at this point people just know it as a desert planet.

They say it at the end of ESB, but at that point no one knows it's Luke homeworld. You don't really find out the name of the planet and that it's Luke's home until ROTJ.

Has anyone else noticed this or am I completly off...

Yes, it seems they never mention it by name, but I'm not entirely sure.

They dont mention it in ANH. When C-3P0 asks Luke what planet it is, he doesnt even say, hey your on Tatooine, he just gives him the whole this planet sux speech.

but the whole planet sux speech does not include the name "Tatooine".

re:the sith were never mentioned in the CT either, nor was Palpatine or Organa or a whole bunch of other names.

That's very true...thankfully we had the scripts and the toys and the books and what not for the names.

whats funny is that they mention Mos Eisley by name after the Falcon blasts it way out of there. so for all we knew at that time was that the planet was named Mos Eisley

I almost posted that one, too, but then "Mos Eisley spaeport - you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy" came to mind.
Of course, you could still kinda assume it was the planet's (only) spaceport, but then Anchorhead would have to be another planet, too, and Tosche Station in orbit ;)

I think Lucas is actually a bit infamous for failing to place names within dialogue until a later movie. Case in point - we neither know Mace Windu or Shmi Skywalker by name until AOTC, despite the fairly substantial roles they had in TPM. Additionally, although we hear the planet referred to as Bespin, we never know that Lando's mining colony is called Cloud City in ESB.

Now, if we didn't know the name of Luke by the third movie, we might have a problem, but as it doesn't really hurt the storyline, I can overlook it. :)

"we neither know Mace Windu or Shmi Skywalker by name until AOTC"

We still don't know the name "Mace", do we? He's called Master Windu all the time only, right?

and yeah, Palpy was never mentioned. The OS posted all opening crawls some time ago, but I can't find them right now.

EDIT: SPOILER!! Now I found it. Beware! Link contains RotS opening crawl, too!
(although it's debatable if that's a spoiler. It's the first thing you see of the movie anyway ;))

this is quite funny thing to look for, and i believe the LotR movies contain this phenomena as well.

    lets see...

palpatine is never said in the OT
    nor is sith
    nor is x-wing (i think)
come to think of it, no imperial or rebel fighters are ever mentioned by name except for TIE fighter (which is said in RotJ)
boba fett is mentioned ONCE in the OT right before he falls to his death (**** EU!!!)

nute gunray is not mentioned until AotC
nor is mace windu (although "mace" is not mentioned yet is it?)
    nor is shmi skywalker
    naberrie is not said
is "theed" said? i cant remember
slave 1 is not mentioned by name anywhere in the saga

i'm sure there are many more

"Ship approaching, X-Wing class", some Imperial guy in TESB
    but that's the only one

    who says "TIE fighter"?

hey, I think Theed really isn't said either.

the name Slave1 is rather unimportant, though

I almost posted that one, too, but then "Mos Eisley spaeport - you will never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy" came to mind.

And what's funny about that is that when the Falcon is caught in the DS tractor beam, the Imperial officer who comes in to tell Vader and Tarkin notes that it "matches the description of one that blasted out of Mos Eisley," with noting the planet that Mos Eisley is on. So for a backwater planet that's "farthest from the bright center of the universe," everyone in that conversation seemed to know the name of one of its spaceports.

ObLineChange: "Mos Eisley? My mother used to live near there!"

aah i forgot about that imperial officer.

and to answer your question, twiilek, it is lando who says TIE fighter while racing through the DSII. "split up and head back to surface. see if you can get a few of those TIE FIGHTERS to follow you!"

and yes i agree that Slave I is unimportant. i had simply run out of things to write about :)

The thing that bugs me is that the term "lightsaber" is not mentioned in Episode 1. Anakin calls it a "lasersword" when he sees Qui-Gon's. If a newcomer was to watch the saga from the beginning it wouldn't be called a lightsaber until the end of Episode 2 by Dooku

That's a good observation, and true. Never thought of it that way.

Was Palpatine's name ever mentioned? What I'm wondering is, how did everyone know by the time of The Phantom Menace that Palpatine would become the Emperor?

"split up and head back to surface. see if you can get a few of those TIE FIGHTERS to follow you!"

Reverend, some don't/didn't. But even those who don't know the Emperor's name might have been tipped off by the same actor for "both" roles ;)

"Was Palpatine's name ever mentioned? What I'm wondering is, how did everyone know by the time of The Phantom Menace that Palpatine would become the Emperor?"

It might have been in the script for ROTJ, I'm not sure. I know he's only refered to as The Emperor in the credits of both ESB and ROTJ.

But the name Palpatine came up in novels, comics, the toys, etc. So basiclly through all the other media, he was refered to Palpatine, that's how we knew his name.

That name though had to be created in a script or in the stories for the movies that GL wrote, otherwise I highly doubt GL would've used a name that someone else created.

Oh, and in terms of Mace Windu, the name Mace is in the credits at the end of TPM and AOTC...but you guys are right, it's actually never said during the movies.

A lot of the names and stuff, only big time fans like us and kids are really going to know them because the names are on the toy packaging and in all the books and what not. The causal fan is not going to know.

I'm quite certain that the script included in the Art of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi refers to Palpatine as Emperor Palpatine on a few occasions.

They're mentioned in the scripts and books, though, which is why people already knew the names before the PT came out.
