    Shield generators or Sensor Scanners?
I am more inclined to believe the latter.

If you're talking about the sphere on the bottom of a Star Destroyer, that's the Solar Ionization Reactor. If you're talking about the two spheres near the bridge, they're Deflector Shield Generator Domes.

Meh. I rather go with the Scanners. Having shield generators in these positions and being so weakly armored (see A-Wings attacks on Executator) make it pretty dumb.

The official position is that they are scanner globes that also feature in the generation of the bridge deflector shields. They're not the primary generators--which are internal--but they function in some unspecified manner. In general, this was a retconn to both make proper sense of the fiasco without overwriting previous material that suggests a role in shield generation.

I agree with Robal. He is exactly right. If you had a sensor suite in each one of those domes. You can check out about half a sector. lol

I prefer the games' shield generators explanation, just because it afforded me the opportunity to own a Imperial Star Destroyer with a Y-Wing. :p

Pretty silly in the games when a simple low perfomance fighter can take on a 1,600 meters Imperator Star Destroyer, or for that matter the Super Star Destroyer and win.

At least the movies and film novelization sources do implicate that fighters cannot take on any capital ship easily without capital support.

Truthfully you don't want to believe anything that's stated in a game for the simple fact that the producers of the game just through stuff in there to make it more interesting or to give a massive ship an idiotic weakness like that.
