Despite its status quo love in all eras, Star Wars is full of status quo breaking technology, powers and corners of the galaxy that allows it to freely try different things. Timetravel, teleportation, stargates, there basically is nothong the GFFA does not have somewhere in some form. Though contrary to other scifi/fantasy universes, those technologies failed to become massmarket technology spread far and wide but rather exist in the hidden corners of the galaxy, despite some being quite famous enough that one may wonder, why is there no massmarket use and study of them? Lets kick it off with the most well known by fans: The Ancient Races like Gree, Kwa, Sharu, Celestials used Hypergates (think Stargate) that employ wormholes through space to travel with or without spaceships through them. While the gffa Gree devolved and have lost a lot of their tech, few thousand years back during the TOR MMO some gates still could be activated. ( https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Hypergate ) ( https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Infinity_Gate ) Even as late as the Clone Wars (Star Wars Decide your Destiny: The Lost Legion) the separatists hired an engineer to build them such a hypergate though it is unknown if it was based on Gree technology. Fact is it did work to transplant an entire legion to a far away planet. Hence the technology has been cracked and exists in modern GFFA times. (https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Hyperspace_warping_device ) But like these technological means, there existed natural means too. Be it the World between Worlds as natural portals across space and time, or teleportation powers for Forceusers. Some species had teleportation skills which may or may not be based on inherent Force abilities. Notably the Aing-Ti could teleport themselves or objects and even flowwalk through time. The Ee species also had limited teleportation powers. https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Teleportation As a Force Power teleportation could be learned even... In addition to the below examples, a related power like phasing through solid matter existed with the Dark Woman Anya Kuro as one who moved through closed doors or walls. https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Teleport This kind of teleportation also could be achieved through technological means, which several ancient species managed: https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Lora https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Transporter_Control_Center https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Poz Now with the Rakata as only the latest ancient species using teleportation devices, unlocking it in modern times seemed only a matter of time. During the wars against the Sith the Republic learned and studied them like a lot of other Rakatan technology. With scientists unlocking the potential during the Clone Wars as aforementioned, later eras might produce the first safely useable devices! Ewoks 14: King for a Day https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Matter_transmitter https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Wim_Magwit https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Magwit's_mystifying_hoop Now, as many will find shocking, the first mention in all of the SW Universe of teleportation devices, which many fans to this day claim should be kept as far from SW as possible, is in the A NEW HOPE novelisation of old itself! While it was mentioned with some disbelief and as a nod to an arcane and near-impossible and rare science, there it is in SW ever since Day 1! A New Hope Novelisation https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Transatomic_physics Some more examples: https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Teleporter https://starwars.fandom.com/wiki/Teleportal So with which arcane technologies existing in the far reaches of the galaxy may the future be given a different look? What Force or species power may change the way things work? Even the GFFA evolves, even if slowly.
I think even in the movie itself, Luke says "Not unless you can alter time, speed up the harvest, or teleport me off this rock."
The first edition WEG module Graveyard of Alderaan included a scene where characters are transported from the Royal Palace of Alderaan to a nearby starship via a still-functional hypergate (explicitly called a hypergate) that the Alderaanian Royal Family fortunately had sitting around their command center for some reason. With a copyright date of 1991 Graveyard is, I think, the first appearance in Star Wars of hypergate-style technology (and only the third appearance of actual teleportation I can think of, following that scene from the Ewoks comic book and whatever was going on with the Wookiees at the end of the Holiday Special.) Interestingly, the second edition version of the same module does away with the hypergate scene and instead has the characters leave the palace via a secret passage to a hidden escape ship - so your mileage may vary as to whether the Alderaan Hypergate is "Legends canon" or not.
Now I need to check which version of Graveyard I got asap later but now you mentioned it I do recall such a transport via gate. If so it even made it into the official german translation of the WEG supplement! Anyway, can you provide a screenshot of the relevant page for me to check the english version? Not sure if I also got that one in english too like all others.
Personally I always felt these technologies were either lost(pre republic civilizations) or simply not easy to integrate with galactic society as it was configured. Not to mention, probably being extremely hard and expensive to research. IU wise anyway.
Relevant passages from Graveyard of Alderaan (1991): Spoiler: Graveyard of Alderaan (1991) [page 43] [...] "The old man now tells the whole story of Another Chance to the Rebels. He explains that weapons of war are both a gift and a shame that Alderaan had to live with. While they tired of war and hated violence, they were also very good at it. The Council of Elders meant for the Alliance to have the ship full of weapons, but the only way to retrieve the ship from its unending flight through hyperspace is to take control of it from inside. To do that, the Rebels will have to use the experimental hypergate." [43] "The hypergate stands against the far wall, a free-standing portal that opens a hole into hyperspace and connects to another gate within the armory ship." [page 44] "To use the gate, the Rebels must simply leap through it. Read:" [44] "You stand before the hypergate portal, watching the fast-moving streaks of light so reminiscent of hyperspace. Then, as you watch, the portal's view shifts to the interior of a huge space vessel. It must be Another Chance! But you have only a moment before the scene shifts again." [44] "The Rebels can leap through the portal two at a time. Make them roll dice, and describe the tension of the moment, but whatever they roll, they find themselves within the armory ship. Go to episode four." [page 45] "The Rebels get aboard the armory ship by stepping through the experimental hypergate in the command chamber of the Royal Palace of Alderaan. After a moment of strange sensations, they step onto the deck of the armory ship's bridge. Read:" [45] "You leap into a weird portal the old man called the hypergate, and suddenly you feel your body stretching in a hundred different directions. You feel as though you are moving very, very fast, yet you experience none of the sensations of movement. You see streaks of color all around you, and for a moment you feel as though you have become one of those streaks of light. Then, as quickly as it started, you feel yourself being drawn back together. You step out of the hypergate onto the bridge of a very old, very large spacecraft." [45] "The first thing the Rebels notice when they find themselves on the bridge is that the hypergate portal has become clear. It no longer shows the shifting colors of hyperspace. The movement of so many people in such a short period of time has irreversibly damaged the experimental travel system. It will never work again." [45] "The second thing they notice is that the shifting colors of hyperspace can be seen through the bridge's viewport. They have entered a ship that is traveling through hyperspace!" [...] [page 46] "The Rebels begin this episode on the bridge of Another Chance. The hypergate was used up transporting the Rebels here, and is no longer in working order. It cannot even be repaired, as many of its old circuits have fused or melted away completely due to the sudden abuse fostered upon them. The prototype transport portal was not designed or constructed to handle so many passengers in so brief a span of time." [...] I note that my copy of Classic Adventures: Volume Two (1995) (a compilation which reprinted Graveyard of Alderaan) altered these sections in the way +Fan already mentioned. A brief summary: Spoiler: Classic Adventures: Volume Two (1995) [pages 46-49] "And, if we are very, very lucky, the shielded tunnel that leads to the Royal Family's escape vehicle may still be intact ..." -- Scenes of an escape tunnel, a hidden hangar, escaping the asteroid via the Alderaanian Royal Family's Skipray Blastboat, and a homing beacon summoning Another Chance.
