Tell me if this is messed up...

I want you all to listen to this story, and tell me what I should do..

Okay, i've started working at Food Lion #885 sometime around September 2005. All in all it was a great store, i've met a lot of good people, and everything was hunky dorry ( If that's even a word..)

Okay, here comes the end of July. I spoke to the manager that I was under, and said that I was to be leaving the store on August 15th, 2007, so I could attend Fayetteville State University. I gave him the letter, told him that, and everything was good to go. I stated in the letter that when I was to return back to Durham, I would be availible to work again.

Fast Forward to may, I called the store, told them that I was backl in town, so I could work back there if need be. Okay, the manager there said that I needed to resend my application to that store again, so I did it as asked. A couple of days later, I called there, but the manager said that I wasn't eligeble for rehire. Initially, I thought that because I haven't worked there for in like almost a year, that that was ther problem.

Fast forward to just a week or 2 ago, I called the Food Lion general office headquarters-whatever and spoke to the person on duty. I told her my story, and she directed me to the HR Manager at the food lion where I worked. Again, I told him my story, and it took a day or 2, but he said the reason I was not eligible for Rehire was because of Dishonesty, but he wouldn't tell me anything further. I called the General Food Lion office, told them what the HR Manager told me, and the woman said that she would give him a call back.

Fast Forward again to yesterday, and the HR Manager told me the reason that I was "Terminated" for "Dishonesty" was because of "Coupon Fraud". The funny thing is, This was put in the system in December 2007, but I left in august..

Coupon Fraud?! Mind you, I've never touched the register, as i was a Service Associate the entire time I was employed at Food Lion, and I left, andve my notice in Late July of last year, Plus I was at FSU in december, so there is no possible way that I could have been terminated in december. So, tell me what I should do..

Also, Were any of you all ever in a similar situation?

 

If you really want to work there again I would get back in touch with the HR person and explain the situation and how the dates you were provided don't match up.

It would probably be easier for you to find a new job.

But if you're going to do something about this one, go to the person most in charge.

 

yeah, you need to pursue this until they get it corrected in your records. even if you never work for them again, it's not good to have something incorrect AND "ugly" on your record at a previous employer. perhaps they got the paperwork mixed up & it was someone else who was fired for this & they just documented it wrong. definately get them to fix it, either way!

 

Definitely get this figured out - many job applications will ask if you have ever been terminated and the reason why.

 

Well, Technically I won't be able to find another job until I get this straightened out.

 

Believe me, I'm pursuing this matter. I will get answers.

 

You have answers you know why they say you were ineligible for rehire and their information is incorrect. It is time to stop looking for answers and start demanding they correct the error.

 

Hmm I would get a lawyer personally. That could effect you in getting future jobs. I was in a similar situation. I did get fired but it was because of one supervisor was prejudiced. They also put that because I was injured on the job during work I had safety issues. This was Target. I didn't sue, but now I wish I did. I was just trying to just find work and I didn't want to bother with the legal part. I regret it now.

 

That sucks dude. It seems they got pissed because you left.

 

This all seems to be very helpful advice people.

Anyway, I started working at FL in late September 2005. I don't know if this is relevant or not, but the entire time I was employed there, we must have went through 20-25 Cashiers, and 3 CSSMs. In fact, the number of people who have been working there since I've worked there from Sept. 2005-August 2007, I can count on one hand.

Anyway, I was a Service Associate the entire time I was there. My duties were, but not limited to:

Bagging Groceries
Collecting Carts
Cleaning Bathrooms
Emptying Trash
Getting Ice from the freezer
Putting Food Items in Reclaim, and back on the shelves
etc..

However, never ONCE did I work as a cashier or handle coupons of any sort. And the fact is, They said my termination was activated in December 2007. But I have witnesses ( Former Coworkers) Who knew that I've left in August 2007, so somebody must have screwed up..

 

Kill them all.

 

It's retail. It's always ****ed up.

 

Go to the store in person and talk to someone, if you can. Try making and appointment with the general manager. Face to face, they're less likely to give you the run-around. And be very clear that you're not there to figure out what happened, you're there to have them correct it, immediately.

McDonald's is always hiring.

 

As long as you are headed to white-collar work in the future, no one is going to care about a supermarket job. Hell, I wouldn't even put it on my resume.

Getting a lawyer is the worst advice in this thread.

Even if it's not on your resume, a lot of job applications will ask you to list all prior employment and contact numbers, so I would definitely work this out.

 

I'm not thinking of getting a Lawyer just yet, but i'm trying to find out why I was terminated for Dishonesty for Coupon Fraud in December 2007 when:
1. I left FL in August 2007
2. I've never worked on the cashier

 

Yeah, definitely work it out. But I don't think a lawyer will ever be necessary in this situation, honestly.

I do not have much to add to this thread, except that I have not heard the name "Food Lion" for a long time! I havent seen a Food Lion since I left Virginia in 99. I used to crawl around these storm drain pipes that ran under a highway next to a Food Lion, back in middle school. Good adventuring.
