I thought this would be an interesting thing to discuss. Where do you see the new character falling on the Alignment System. Here is a link to use as a guide.

    http://easydamus.com/alignment.html

    Poe Dameron- Chaotic Good
    Han Solo- Chaotic Neutral
    Leia- Neutral Good
    Finn- Neutral Good
    Rey- Lawful good
    Luke- Lawful good
    Kylo Ren- Lawful Evil
    Snoke- Chaotic Evil
    Gleeson's Character- Neutral Evil
    Lando- Chaotic Nuetral
    Vader- Lawful Evil

I find it interesting that I picture Rey and Luke being Lawful Good (does stuff like allowing a disarmed enemy to pickup their weapon).

I also see Vader and Ren sharing the Lawful Evil alignment. (basically meaning they do evil to be evil, but have some sort of code behind it).

While I think Poe will be sort of this trilogy's Han, I do not think they will share the same alignment. Both are free spirited and in search of adventure and both willing to help those in need, but I think Poe will be more structured in his character than Han was. Seeing as Han was a mercenary working for thugs when we met him, and Poe is fighting for a cause when we 1st see him.

I had issues placing Palpatine. In the PT I would not call him Chaotic Evil initially, but he definitely is from ROTS and on.

If anything, I think Kylo Ren would be very much chaotic evil. If you watch Adam Driver's previous performances, he either acts weird or very intense and unpredictable. I think this is the reason why JJ Abrams hired him. I see Kylo Ren being a moody psychopath and everyone will be walking on eggshells around him.

I agree. Its very possible that Ren is the Chaotic Evil in this movie, while Snoke is more of a Neutral/Lawful evil (Evil with a calculated plan).

I also think Boba Fett and Phasma are both True Neutral characters (Not discerning Good from Evil, and not either in themselves)

Finn is chaotic good, surely? he's on the run, and changing allegiances due to his own moral code

    The Ten Neutral Good Commandments

A list of Ten Commandments for a neutral good religion may look like this:
    1. You shall lie only to evil-doers.
    2. You shall not harm the innocent.
    3. You shall not murder.
    4. You shall help the needy.
    5. You shall honor those who promote goodness.
    6. You shall follow the law unless breaking the law results in more good.
    7. You shall not betray others.
    8. You shall bring evil-doers to justice.
    9. You shall steal only to promote goodness.
    10. You shall seek unlimited good for others.

I think this shows why he changes his alliances. He changes because he was asked to do something he could not bring himself to do (where as a neutral character would do it out of self preservation)
I also think he will be filling Leia's role in the new big 3. Good, but not afraid to make some concessions in order to accomplish good. Where as Luke is definitely Lawful Good. Willing to do good no matter what the cost even if it means his life. I see Rey filling that role.

    A couple more

    Yoda- Lawful good
    Qui-Gong- Neutral good
Obi-Wan- Torn between neutral good and lawful good
Anikan (pre darkside)- Chaotic Good (his chaotic nature is what made him susceptible to falling)

I was about to say, if there was ever a Lawful good character it is Luke. Guy could not even bring himself to kill uber evil Vader because he was his father and feared the darkside. A key thing about Lawful good is that they can be good to their own detriment. There was multiple times Luke got himself into trouble in the name of Goodness.

The main difference Between Lawful and Neutral good (Luke and Leia) is that Neutral good characters are willing to make the hard decisions if it is for the greater good. (Like closing the doors on Hoth when Luke and Han were not back yet. That is why I see Finn as Neutral good. He will make the hard choices in the ST. Rey unrelenting good nature will at times cause more harm than good. Poe will be like Han, throwing caution out the window to protect those he cares about.

We don't have much on Rey's alignment really, but living on her own, hand to mouth, I don't see her lawful good at all. She seems more like Han. Chaotic good, maybe, or neutral, or even true neutral.

Perhaps the characters might turn out to be more complex than we might perceive they will or should be.

I am sure we will see some shifts throughout the Trilogy. For instance Han was a Chaotic Neutral when we met him at the Cantina (and prior to that), but he is Chaotic good by the end of the movie and the rest of the OT (things like risking his life to save Luke on hoth for instance, is not something a Chaotic neutral would do).

Character archetypes. Typically used in role playing games, but most characters in any book or movie fall into them.

I think it is interesting because I think it will help show what roles the newbies will play in relation to the roles of the old cast.
