Just saw a rerun of That 70's Show. Eric was trying to explain the importance of Star Wars to his dad and referred to Vader as the Dark Lord of the Sith. I'm not entirely sure when the word Sith was first publicly used, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't used during the original trilogy right?

Yeah. While Sith was mentioned in the the movie ANH released in 1977, it was in the ANH novel numerous times which was released in 1976. So I suppose you could say to be technically accurate, the only way they could've had the word "Sith" in that episode is if they read the book...so they used the EU. :p

sorry, had to get that out :p

In other news, the red-haired girl on that show is really hot.

He he he. I love this show SO much.

But I actually think using SW in the first season did raise some interesting problems, since it placed that season as occuring in '77. And thus would seem to limit how long the show can actually be in the 70's (I think they have actually reached the 80's by now, but whatever...still amusing).

Ashton Kutcher is an idiot though.

    It's alright Adam! *patpatpat*

Also many magazines back in `77 like Starlog, presskits and large publicity theatrical openings had character photos and bios where Vader was clearly identified as a Dark Lord of the Sith.

here's a real mistake: at least twice in the series, and in the episode mentioned above, Eric is seen holding a Millennium Falcon carrying case. that case wasn't made until the 90's.

I thought it was later in the series that Star Wars first comes out? I remember that episode because Kelso was trying to jedi mind trick Jackie into watching Star wars again.

When I was little in the gold years of Star Wars all my friend knew Vader was The Dark Lord of the Sith, however one kid, Rush Wilmore swore he was The Dark Lord of the Fifth. Anyone sure the book said it but most kids, under 15 knew it cause of the trading cards I believe.

The gang went to see Star Wars in the Season 1 Finale.

The figures used in the series are from the 90's POTF line, not the 70's vintage line. They also claim that there was Star Wars merchandise immediately after the films release when there wasn't any until the beginning of the next year.

And I'm definitly sure that there was no Darth Vader with green lightsaber figure.

That 70s show is rife with mistakes and anachronisms - I know because I'm the same age as the characters. I caught one last season: Eric makes a reference to Boba Fett. Boba didn't appear until ESB in 1980, and the show is only up to 1979 (according to the license plate on the Vista Cruiser.)So there, ha ha!

Ashton really is a punk'd ass chump. But the guy who plays Hyde is hot hot hot. I do not for one second buy him being in a serious relationship with that braindead (inserts derogatory slang word here)Jackie. Maybe for a one-nighter, but not anything substantive or ongoing. Their characters are waaaaay too different; Jackie is a shallow, vain, money and status obsessed social climber, whereas Hyde is an edgy, rebellious, intelligent anarchist. Remember when he was interviewing for a job at the burger joint and he told the interviewer his long-term goal was to unionize the workers? Jackie would never even think of something that clever.

Man, that must really bug me that I would dash off such a screed. It's just a TV show. But I wish some of the writers actually remembered the 70s. It was quite the interesting time.

Maybe so, but there was the mail-in figure. You know the one I'm talking about. ;)

Hasn't this show be in the last 70's, as in 77-79 for a lot longer than 3 years?
Also I have noticed that Hyde wears a Alabama tshirt, that band didn't really hit until the early 80s. Its a country band also and just seems out of place for Hyde all together.

I noticed on one episode, somebody had a Darth Vader action figure....
But it was a NEW one (early 2000's), not one that would have been around in the 70's.

ITS A TV SHOW!!!! TV SHOW!!! I DOUBT THEY HAVE SW EXPERTS ON HAND TO SAY "oh, that figure is not canon."

This is THAT 70'S SHOW, not SW. Come on people.

Yeah, they probably figured no one would notice the year the action figure was made. The only thing that mattered was that it was of a character from the 70's.

This whole thing with That 70's Show using SW action figures from the nineties reminds me of how in one episode of The Wonder Years they used Topps baseball cards from the eighties, when it was set in the sixties. It got me all wound at the time, being a baseball card collector and all(I'm not anymore, thankfully),but it doesn't now. You'd think period shows would have someone on hand to catch stuff like that, but I guess not. This whole thing is one reason I'm glad don't watch That 70's Show.

I think Eric also made a comment to Donna the he would do something that Luke Skywalker was afraid to do....use the dark side of the force!

Though clearly that didnt happen until 1983! :D

I remember seeing "dark lord of the sith" on trading cards, in magazines and folders I had back in school. Its nothing new.

Just like Tarkin was refered to back then as "Grand Moff Tarkin"

Yeah you could see Dark Lord of the Sith on all the related Vader Merchandise.

The Star Wars Storybook for example had a page or two in the back with all the main character's head shots, and who they were. Vader was Darth Vader, Dark Lord of the Sith.

    That 70s show rules...

Wasn't the SW Holiday Special out in 1979? Boba Fett first appeared there, so maybe the kids watched that?
