DALLAS - A teenager was blinded after being struck in the face with a frog shot from a so-called "potato gun."

Daniel Benjamin Berry, 17, received the injury after he looked down the barrel of the gun's PVC pipe barrel and was hit in the face by the frog.

"He is going to be blind in both eyes," Daniel's mother, Lisa Berry, said.

Potato guns are made of pipe with one end sealed. A potato is wedged into the open end and a flammable liquid put into a sealed chamber is ignited, launching the object.

Denton County Sheriff's Department spokesman Kevin Patton said the accident occurred about 1 a.m. Sunday when Daniel Berry joined a crowed of teenagers watching the gun be fired.

When it misfired, Daniel Berry looked down the barrel to see what was wrong when the gun went off, Patton said.

"He said it just went off. It was a misfire. It hit him square in the face," Lisa Berry said, adding that her son had broken bones in his face that would require surgery.

Patton said no charges would be filed.

"This is the first incident involving a potato gun that we have had to deal with," he said. "What are you going to do? This was an accident."

Lisa Berry said the accident ruined her son's career dreams.

"All he ever wanted to do was be an Air Force pilot," she said. "That isn't going to happen now."

This is so sad. Does the kid not know not to look at the barrel of any type of gun to see why it did not fire? idiot.

They make potato guns sound dangerous, when in reality, they can be made (probably not "as effective") without any sort of flammable materials.

 

You know, if the frog would've hit him in the throat, this kid would've won a Darwin Award.

And one would think they'll get in some animal cruelty mess. I doubt shooting a frog out of a potato gun is accepted in the eyes of the judicial system.

Looks like we got a future candidate for the Darwin Awards.

I have a hard time sympathizing with people who get hurt or killed when they do dumb things. We have been given common sense for a reason, people should really use it.

In this case he did all three.

The fact that he was:

1. Ignorant enough to stuff a frog in a potato gun.
2. Ignorant enough to fire said gun.
3. Ignorant enough to look down the barrel of said gun when it misfired.

 

What idiot looked down the barrel of a projectile weapon?! And who shoots a frog from a potato gun... poor frog.

Can you see that I have no sympathy for the kid? I just want to know what happened that frog... I'm guessing it blew up when it hit his face, right?

 

For some reason all I can think about is what that frog splatter must've looked like.

 

Maybe there is not frog involved. I mean, there is such stuff as bird shot, used to shoot birds. frog shot might be (bullets? pellets?) used to shot frogs.

 

Oh man, just imagine it, the kid staring into the gun, the frog comes out and hits him in the face. BAM frog guts flying to and fro. Good stuff man. If they had a video camera they could win $10,000 from AFV!!

 

I think "a frog" and "the frog" is pretty definitive. It was a frog.

 

I find that extremely humorous. I hope this kid never breeds and passes on those "stupid" genes though.
