They'll all be voiced by Microsoft Sam, and you're going to like it or I'll turn this show around.

Agreed, but it is important that the accents used do not play into offensive racial stereotypes IMO.

well of course, that's why I'm saying variety is important

if all rodians have the same accent when they speak basic then you run into potential stereotype problems

but if rodians have a variety of accents, just like humans, then it shows that rodians are from all across the galaxy

All the rodians in live action we met have spoken Huttese language. What will Rodian basic speak and language sound in live action?

I liked better how Nemodians and Muuns sounded in The Clone Wars then how they sounded in the Prequels. It wasent offensive and stereotype.

IMO, a better way of opposing stereotypes is giving alien characters a bigger variety of personalities and story roles.

Dumb question ( not ironic) ... my native language is not English, when I travel the world I mostly recognize all native speakers of my language when they speak English ( if it's not their primary language of course), because of a distinct accent they tend to have especially while pronouncing some letters like R or because of the way they hypenate words and rhythm their phrases.
It does not matter where in the world they grew up,but if their native and primary language is the same as mine I can spot their distinctive accent in like 80%of them...
So if you call my native language rhodian and you substitute English with basic... I would tell you that if your native language is rhodian it is largely probable that your accent speaking basic would be quite similar to mine and most of the other rhodians speaking basic as a second language...
    I don't really see a stereotype here?
Unless of course a rhodian accent is portrayed as funny, dumb, excessively theatrical or highly exaggerated... and that seems to be the problem in most of the movies and series around nowadays?
And as my native language is Italian... and I don't really speak like a-Mario... you can see I know what we talkin 'bout ;)[face_laugh]:D the stereotype is strong with my language!
So I think all rhodians having a quite similar accent while speaking basic kinda makes sense but the problem would be if that accent is aimed at ridiculing the character?
Sorry if I am out of scope I jumped I the thread without reading all the way back ...patience I must learn patience!

I think…the issue being discussed is that the Neimodians in the prequels had stereotypically Japanese accents. And that this shouldn’t be repeated.

Comunque, c’e anche la possibilità che membri della stessa razza potrebbero avere diverse esperienze. Un Rodian nato su Coruscant, per esempio, avrebbe un’accento diverso che uno nato su Rodia...

    @ShayaLothal

sure you can tell if someone is Italian, but you could most likely also tell if they've been living in NYC compared to say London or Sydney

anyways, I believe we've already had Twi'Leks speak with different voices and accents, I think that's the right approach

Really? I didn’t notice that in Ahsoka, Mando and Book of Boba Fett. Were Twi’leks don’t speak with French accents at all. Only in TCW and Rebels. And then it was just those who still live on Ryloth.

Oh ya good point however if you ever listen to the audiobooks almost every Twi’lek has an at least subtle French accent. Star Wars has a weird thing with accents though

Isn’t Huttese as spoken by Greedo just someone’s imitation of hearing the Quechua language and Nien Nunb was speaking some East African language?

Personally, I’d be fine if they just did more stuff like that for alien languages. If the Twi’lek language was just straight up French.

If Hiroyuki Sanada is cast in a role where he has to speak both English and Japanese, obviously his accent is going to carry through to his English lines. But that’s different than the Neimoidians, which to my knowledge are voiced by a bunch of white guys, doing possibly offensive imitations of a Japanese accent that may be on par with a non-Italian doing “babidi boopi” Italian.

Having said that, if they wanted to hire voice actors that speak some dialect of Japanese to represent an alien language in Star Wars, I think that would be cool.

I recall reading somewhere that Ody Mandrell was yelling Spanish to his pit droids. And while someone on these forums told me that claim is false, for that brief moment I actually thought that was pretty cool.

well ...having Italian as your mother tongue does not equate being italian though...
...as does not having french or german as your mother tongue !
You could be all born in the same country, and Speak a national language but speak three different languages;)
That was a massive hint on where I am from...
    Non sono italiana...
...but I do not speak a foreign language in my Country!
    Yep I agree!

Isn't Embo speaking really ****** French?

I think it’s Dave Filoni literally just speaking horrible French and then then doing wacky stuff to it

Pretty much all the languages in Star Wars are rooted in real life languages (eg. Zulu for Jawaese, Tibetan/Kalmuk/Lakota for Ewokese), in order to create a realistic collection of phonemes that would be convincing as a language. They worked with a linguistics professor who helped them come up with words and phrases that are unique but evocative of the Quechua language (which he did not speak, but had a talent for quickly recognizing the phonemes and word/sentence construction). Some of Nien Nunb's lines were spoken in Hyah (from Kenya) because they ran out of time to write fictional lines for the character.
The story is that they put out a casting call for Thai (not Japanese) voice actors, but just got non-actors that wanted to be in Star Wars. So they cast non-Thai voice actors to replicate the accent to the best of their ability.
