Adam Sandler. You may know him from his popular hits like "Jack and Jill", "That's My Boy", and Netflix's "Murder Mystery 2". Speaking of Netflix, "Happy Gilmore 2" is slated for release this year on their platform. The cast is stacked - Rory McIlroy, Scottie Scheffler, Bryson DeChambeau, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, Will Zalatoris and more. Are you excited for "Happy Gilmore 2"? What's your favorite Sandler movie? How does he keep getting away with it?! Discuss!
Unpopular opinion (yeah, I know it belongs in the other thread), but I think one of his best comedy movies was The Wedding Singer.
... how is that an unpopular opinion? It's like his highest rated comedy on RT... Also, it's a good movie! My favorite is Happy Gilmore, but I like most of his early comedies, including Airheads. But to answer the question: Simple: when he was doing his own thing early, he learned apparently very well from Lorne Michaels and managed to not spend too much money and make incredible amounts of money. So now even with slightly more expensive things (e.g. Hotel Transylvania since animation is expensive), he still makes bank. Even with a few high-profile bombs (Little Nicky, Eight Crazy Nights, etc.) -- he still made money. Hell, Jack and Jill and The Master of Disguise made money! Those are TERRIBLE movies!
It’s also probably been of no small assistance that comedies (along with horror) are some of the best return-on-investment films, even if the films stink.
It just seems like TWS is among the last films that anyone talks about regarding Sandler's repertoire.
I guess in a sense it was a "dramedy"; though it does still lean more towards the comedic elements. This isn't Uncut Gems we're talking about here.
Punch Drunk Love or Uncut Gems. Also, really wish Tarantino’s plan to cast him as The Bear Jew in Inglorious Basterds had worked out.
Steve Carell's acknowledgement and tribute to Adam Sandler in The Office was genuinely an amazing thing and turning point for Sandler's reputation that I think had fallen off quite a bit by that point.
funnily, i just watched billy madison yesterday. a lot of the jokes have aged pretty terribly and it's completely over-the-top and ridiculous, but i still laughed a lot.
I still laugh at Billy opening the Valentine from the principal and then it cuts to the principal taking off his glasses and nodding. Perfect scene - no notes!
I've always wondered how Josh Mostel -- son of the blacklisted Zero Mostel -- ended up in each other's orbits.
One of the best sports gags of all time is Dan Marino in Little Nicky begging Harvey Keitel Satan for a Super Bowl ring.
Billy Madison and Happy Gilmore are peak, with odd flourishes here and there. Waterboy is fantastic too. Not into the Grown Ups era. Netflix era has been a stream of uneven output
Grandma's Boy is one of my all time favorite comedies. Most people don't even consider it a stoner movie in the way Half Baked is considered a stoner movie. Grandma's Boy is a really good Clerks style buddy comedy nerd movie about a group of guys working at a video game company in the mid-2000s. It was way ahead of its time before nerd culture became mainstream. And it has absolutely stood the test of time. Paul Blart is also a good clean family comedy that I recommend to people. It's a lesser known Thanksgiving movie as well because it takes place over that weekend with the main plot centering around Black Friday. While neither movie has Sandler in it, both were made by his company Happy Madison. They aren't without their faults, they aren't cinematic masterpieces, and you certainly have to approach them with the mindset that they were made by Adam Sandler's company, but they hold up.
Adam Sandler's Wins (with me, anyway): Happy Gilmore The Wedding Singer The Waterboy Big Daddy Spanglish (underrated) Grown Ups Hustle (WAY underrated) The "Alright" tier: Billy Madison Bulletproof Punch-Drunk Love Mr. Deeds 50 First Dates The Longest Yard Grown Ups 2 Pixels Uncut Gems There is a lot in the "skip" tier: everything else.
Netflix Sandler has been very variable but better than his 2010 era. I am a bit concerned as the dramatic reverence of the Happy Gilmore 2 teaser though like it's Avengers Endgame Shooter was in Beverly Hills Cop 4 though!
Never seen any of his movies except Punch Drunk Love which I didn't like. I've literally never heard of a single person on that list.
