The Air Force Has the Smartest Enlisted People

    If I don't get into the Coast Guard Academy, I'm going Air Force. I'm taking my SAT too late to get the congressional nomination needed for the Air Force Academy class of 2010 (I misread the deadline instructions and the test results would come back about two weeks too late), so I would just enlist and try again another year.

    Anyway, you've probably seen this before, but I thought it was kind of funny.

    Air Force Intelligence

    There is no doubt at all in my military mind that, of all the Services, the Air Force has the most intelligent enlisted people. This is not just theory, it's provable fact:
    Take the Army, for instance. When the stuff hits the fan, the young Army private wakes up from a bellow from the First Sergeant. He grabs a set of BDUs out of his foot locker, gets dressed, runs down to the chow-hall for a breakfast on the run, then jumps in his tank. Pretty soon, the Platoon Commander arrives, gives him a big salute, and says, "Give 'em Hell, men."

    Now take the Marines. When the stuff hits the fan, the young Marine recruit is kicked out of bed by his First Sergeant, puts on a muddy set of BDUs because he just got back in from the field three hours before. He gets no breakfast, but is told to feel free to chew on his boots.

    He runs out and forms up with his rifle. Pretty soon, his platoon commander comes out, a young Captain, Gives his Marines a Sharp Salute, and says, "Give 'em Hell, Marines!"
    Now take the Navy. When the stuff hits the fan, the young Sailor is eating breakfast in the messroom.. He walks 20 feet to his battle station, stuffing extra pastries in his pocket as he goes. There he sits, in the middle of a steel target, with nowhere to run, when the Captain comes on the 1MC and says, "Give 'em Hell, Sailors! I salute you!"

    Now the Air Force. When the stuff hits the fan, the Airman receives a phone call in his off-base quarters. He gets up, showers, shaves, and puts on a fresh uniform he had just picked up from the BX cleaners the day before. He jumps in his car, and stops at McDonalds for a McMuffin on his way into work. Once he arrives at work, he signs in on the duty roster and proceeds to his F-16. He spends 30 minutes pre-flighting it, signs off the forms. Pretty soon the Pilot, a young captain gets out and straps into the Plane. He starts the engines. Our Young Airman stands at attention, gives the Captain a sharp salute, and says, "Give 'em Hell, Sir!"

    Air Force sucks. Army sucks. Navy sucks. Marines suck. the whole damn US Military sucks.

    Can anyone explain to me why the U.S. navy is still so sexist? It's still the least-integrated branch of the armed services, isn't it? That makes absolutely zero sense to me, since one would think it would be the army that had the highest number of jobs which wouldn't be open to women.

    I love the military. I would have gone Army ROTC if I could tolerate following orders, but since I don't, I support the ones who can.

    why? im just pissed at people that have to kill other people because the president is an ass.

    I have a hard time believing that. Every time I go on base the amount of uniformed female sailors undoubtedly outnumbers the amount of male sailors. Seems to me to be at least a 1.5 to 1 ratio.

    When my mom was a radioman in the Coast Guard she had to go out on a cutter (USCGC Active) for day duty. She'd been going for a week before her CO realized that the boat didn't have a women's head and she'd had to hold it all day every time she came to work.

    Edit: People usually don't sign up just because they like the idea of killing people. At least, that's not the reason any of my family members have given for why they joined.

    So, you're pissed at the people who are sworn to defend our country and who are themselves at risk of being killed? It's a two way street, our military isn't doing all of the killing. And sure, you have every right to criticize the president for the way he does his job (remember that everyone who joins swears to obey the orders of the president of the United States), but our soldiers are just doing their jobs.

    The Navy is pretty well integrated except for the Submarine service.

    Padme-n-Skywalker: oh c'mon..The current president has nothing to do with it. Many presidents came before him and they each used the Military to a certain end. It's the sacrifice that service members make for this country that allow you to say such a thing. It's your right to speak your mind.

    Wow. That is the least mature, poorest thought out statement I've heard in a long, long time. You don't have to like the war (hell, I don't), you don't have to like the president(again, I don't), but placing your hatred on people who are simply attempting to provide for themselves and their family is wrong. These people join the military because they feel they have no other options, because they have a heritage, or because they feel the need to protect what they love. THEY didn't ask for war. Hell, I bet the majority of them would prefer to NOT be at war. So blame the president, blame the whole gov't. Put your hatred where it belongs, not on somebody who is simply attempting to live a normal life like you or I.

    In all fairness, I've never much cared for that bit of rhetoric. It's the first (and probably a bit of the second) amendment that allows people to say whatever they want. End of story. Most wars have absolutely nothing to do with protection of free speech, and it wasn't the military that decided what sort of freedoms American citizens should have.

    Agreed. I remember the guidance counselors at my high school used to tell kids who didn't want to go to college to consider enlisting. Back then, it seemed like the perfect solution for anyone who needed some direction in life - make a decent living, learn job skills, develop maturity and discipline, do something that'll make your family proud. Of course, this was back in the pre-9/11 era.

    A good number of my classmates ended up going into the military. (It was an urban public school, so there were plenty of kids who weren't going to college.) I wonder sometimes if any of them ended up going to Afghanistan or Iraq. I doubt anyone expected that back then. :(

    Although I am certainly pro-military (Navy brat :p), I have to agree with this statement. Times of war usually bring a reduction of speech rights, and the military is often used to enforce this.

    A friend my wants to join the military, and it not because she wants to go arond killing people mindlessly. She feels it's her duty, and it's been something she always wanted to do.

    Keep in mind that we needed soldiers to back up the document from which this passage comes:

    But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security. ? Such has been the patient sufferance of these Colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter their former Systems of Government. The history of the present King of Great Britain is a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny over these States

    I'd never enlist because I don't like the idea of possibly having a moron giving me orders that could get me killed.

    Marbe, I disagree. I don't think it's the military that's supposed to do that. It's the masses as a whole who are intended to overthrow unjust governments. That's why we have the second amendment - so the public as a whole can be a sort of unorganized militia.

    Sometimes words alone are not enough.

    We need soldiers. I personally believe that while the military may not be the only defender of our unalienable rights, they certainly play an important role in ensuring that others can't take them away from us.

    As someone who once enlisted in the military and has had several relatives in the military I would have to agree.

    People kill other people because that's what people are designed to do, and they will do so no matter who is in charge. It's just more organized this way.

    However, I agree with the second part of your statement.

    Our president is not an ass. In fact, I'd say he's smarter than an ass. Not quite up to people standards though, I'd say he's a spleen.

    Funny that you should call the president an ass, padme.

    I'm not a Bush-hater, but what you said reminded me of Shakespeare's Dogberry who, like Bush, is notorious for his malapropisms:

    USAFA is great.

    I wanted to go there since I was a little kid.
    Then the day before my congressional app was due in the mail... I decided against it.

    Now I have a friend there. I think she likes it except for the weather.
