Okay, i'm a little let down. In my opinion the alien species that we see in the movie are really not that special. I didn't have the real star wars feeling when I saw these creatures. They were to human-like and we didn't see ithorians or gran. George Lucas did one thing right: aliens.

You know I was just thinking about this. And the lack of super common Star Wars aliens like Twi'leks is really apparent.

Like they were all beige colored humanoid blob mutants...

This is one thing that bugged me the most, where are the traditional alien beings? Missed opportunity right there. Really annoying to be honest.

Yeah I wasn't pleased that we didn't see one of the classic species, not withstanding Chewie, Ackbar (who seemed off somehow), and Nien Numb. Couldn't they have thrown in a few Rodians and Ithorians or some such into Mazs bar? Felt like an episode of Farscape.

Or perhaps they were just trying to show there is more to this massive galaxy than Twi'leks and other common races we have grown accustom to seeing. The world of Star Wars is huge and beautiful, there are bound to places where there are more scummy races like we see in the Force Awakens.

That seems logical, but i think it takes away from the star wars feeling. Seeing these aliens on screen, it didn't felt right...

There are actually several species from the classics, and one Ithorian is actually spotted there. But there are a few creatures from the Mos Eisley cantina. I wouldn't mind seeing twi'leks or duros (actually seen only ones, in all other cases there are Neimodeans only). The human nature of aliens in TFA is due to the fact, that this film had to be closer to the Original Trilogy.

Some species are too well-spread, so it is not unusual to see them anywhere, Manaan included their secluded species, which are rarely seen in the Galaxy - in Clone Wars there were a few bounty hunters, which appear on various occasions. Some appeared in other sourcers aside from KOTOR. Paaerduag is even a more rare alien to be seen, and by Galactic Civil is was likely extinct. Kaminoans might have been simply subdued by the Imperial rule after the Clone Wars, while others still appear here and there.

I really like Frigosians - the little fluffy guys with yellow fur and red goggles. They are belived to have very sharp teeth (which are many).

I was very disappointed with the near-total lack of familiar species and creatures.

I totally appreciated the distinction of new designs, but about half of those beasties seemed more suited to a Guillermo del Toro/Hitchiker's Guide/Men In Black movie than Star Wars, which (absolutely no pun intended) was alienating.

I remember thinking the same thing when TPM came out. Other than the odd Twi'lek and Rodian, where were all the familiar aliens I knew? Pretty much no where.

Not a big deal, imo...galaxy is a big place.

I was disappointed with this. We didn't see alot of the classic aliens, twileks, rodians, weequays etc.... This is where it didn't feel very Star Warsy.

True! I wonder, these frigosians, i never heard of their species. Do they appear in a novel/comic?

This was my largest disappointment with the film. Not having any of the ubiquitous aliens (rodians, gran, twileks, etc.) around felt odd to me.

I believe there is a Whipid on Hosnian Prime, for what it's worth. RIP.

This film takes place in the frontiers of that galaxy, close to the unknown regions. Even Tatooine seems absolutely cosmopolitan in comparison to Jakku, so it all checks out to me. :hera:

But here is the danger: too many old Aliens "its just rehash/fan service'. Too many new ones "this isn't Star Wars!". I think they balanced the two pretty well. There were some interesting looking new ones at Maz' castle, and there was also a Wookiee, Sullustan and Mon Cal (yeah all beloved characters, but you know what I mean) and probably more in the background that require further viewing. Was not one of the desert scavengers a Jawa?

Looking at the picture now, it seems doubtful.

Yeah, the aliens didn't really carry over a lot of the classic Star Wars feel. I welcome new aliens to expand the universe, but the prequels did that, whilst also keeping pre-established races as well. I would have loved to see Rodians, Grans, Ishi-Tibb, Neimoidians, etc.

It's funny; I felt the same way when I saw TPM. Perhaps people have gotten too familiar with the overused Twi'leks and Weequays and Rodians and Ithorians of the prequel and Clone Wars era, but each classic trilogy episode showed new aliens that weren't in the previous one. Return of the Jedi didn't fill Jabba's palace with everyone from Mos Eisley and The Empire Strikes Back didn't have anyone from ANH.

I hoped they would use alien races from the EU. There are a lot of great designs that could be enjoyable to see in movies.

You know what vibe I was getting from the aliens in this movie, especially those in Maz's bar? Lord of the Rings. There was a lot of muted brown, earthy colors. I would have preferred a more space-y color pallet with blues and oranges and silvers, particularly in their clothing and get-ups.

Absolutely agree. People seem to forget that many of the 'traditional' SW aliens didn't actually appear until Jabba's palace. No Twi'leks in ANH & TESB. The original trilogy introduced new species and worlds with each episode..some didn't feel very 'Star Warsy' right away, but they sure did over time.

I thought there were plenty of aliens. People seem to overstate their importance in the film's anyway. Aliens have never been the focus of the story, just background characters.

codex of tython - that white alien on the right (givin) is from a new hope.

As to the topic, While it is true that each movie has introduced a ton of new alien races, they've also incorporated aliens from the earlier films. Jab as palace had rodians, jawas, trandoshan, etc. as far as I can tell, every race in maz's is new for this film. It isn't a deal breaker at all but one or two existing aliens would have gone a long time to make it feel more like it was in the same Galaxy.
