I had put off seeing the 1980s classic until I had time to sit down and focus on it, and not on TV. I wanted to see it clean, no commertials, no edits.

So, I sat down this morning with FruityTooty's VHS copy of the movie, and prepared to finally be caught up with the rest of humanity.

    And I hated it.

There's not a scrap of earned character development. There's not a single likable character. There's not a bit of a plot. The buildup to the revealings of why they're in detention isn't earned by any strech of imagaination. Alley Sheedy's character lets herself be transformed into typical prom queen, for the sole purpose of throwing her and Emilio Estevez together in the end. Oh. And why on Earth did Judd Nelson and Molly Ringwald get together? They hate each other. And for good reason.

The movie is full of emo kids whining about how terrible their home lives are, and then the movie ends. I don't see why this would appeal to anyone over 16, and I wouldn't want to promote this behavior in anyone under 16.

Why does anyone like this turd of a movie?

Yeah, I agree, actually. I never found this movie funny or entertaining at all. It's just 4 kids whining on the same set for two hours.

The only cool one (the quiet girl) sells out at the end. Or maybe I just think she's cool 'cause she's hot, especially compared to that redhead whats-her-name.

The Breakfast Club soundtrack? Oh, I can't wait until I'm old enough to feel stuff.

It's a classic, but it's very overrated. It's to slow, and very stereotypical. But I loved X-Play's parody of it.

Actually, it was 5 kids whining.

    (gotta love modern education)

Times were a little different back then. John Hughes was both insightful, and the Devil.

He definitely knew what kids back then wanted and related to.

I don't blame you for not getting it. I didn't either, at first.

But then, I never came from Upper-Class White America to begin with.....

Oh. I saw the TV version.

Surprised no one ever made a teen sitcom out of this movie.

Well to be fair to SR, the kids aren't very memorable.

It's not that, nobody at my high school were anything like those kids, and my classmates were in worse positions then they were.

Edit:If that geeky kid pulled that mess at my school, he'll be in jail, not detention.

It's one of my favorite movies ever.....

John Bender's wise-cracks alone make the movie great. "You are a parent's *** dream."

    Classic!

You have to take into account that the movie's 20 years old and plays into generation-x, not whatever generation we're up to these days.

    Edit: X and Y really.

Generation x'ers liked to sit in detention and share emotions and take drugs and listen to crappy music and stuff? Hmm, sounds familiar.

I'll admit, Bender is funny. But he's also a jerk, and seduces Molly Ringwald for no reason but Hughes wanted it to happen.

But I'd admit, if the movie was about Bender's life, I'd watch. It's the fact of him being stuck with those other losers and in a plotless drivel of a film.

John Bender: You get along with your parents?

Andrew Clark: Well, if I say "yes," I'm an idiot, right?

John Bender: You're an idiot anyway. But, if you say you get along with your parents, well, you're a liar too.
