Star Wars: The Clone Wars puts a new shine on a very recognizable part of Star Wars lore as the Y-wing bombers make their debut in "Shadow of Malevolence," an all-new episode of the hit animated series premiering at 9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, on Cartoon Network.

In the second of a three-episode arc, "Shadow of Malevolence" finds Anakin Skywalker, his Padawan Ahsoka Tano and Jedi Master Plo Koon utilizing long-range Y-wing bombers to lead a bold strike on General Grievous' warship, the Malevolence, and its destructive ion cannon.

I'm totally cool with more Plo Koon. He could become a favorite, I think.

I liked the first two webcomics more, to be honest. Its nice to see how they got the Y-wings, true, though I still prefer the original Episode IV look (partially due to nostalgia). I just didn't like the somewhat heavy-handed "oh, if only we could give Chancellor Palpatine even more unlimited executive power, everything would be better" message, though that partially ties into my lack of interest in the Clone Wars era (since overall everything will only get worse, despite what short-term victories they achieve), although Palpatine saying "for now" was kind of funny. Wonder how much damage those things will do to the Malevolence and what squadron names they'll be using. Gold, perhaps? And that is one very nice picture (Y-wings flying from of the Star Destroyers.

Gun turret aside, they're the same fighter just with added cover plates. I wouldn't be surprised if we eventually see one stripped down to it's ANH state at some point in the series.

The engines are shorter than the ANH version. This one doesn't look as wide, either, and it def. has more plating. It might also be a hair or two shorter and bulkier than the original Y-wing.

Same ship, it just has more coverings on the back that make the engines look shorter:

It's a panel for panel match- the vents, etc.

Really excited for this one. Does anyone know for sure yet if there will be a podcast for it?

I'm not sure that the picture on the right does the original Y-wing justice, but it is interesting to see what they were going for nonetheless.

Wonder why the later Y-wing models dropped the "extra padding."

Stang! I forgot about the podcasts. Have they been informative. It's hard for me to listen to any other Podcasts after listening to the ones for Lost -- those are topnotch.

Well, the picture on the right is just my photoshop sketch based on the cross-section of the OT Y-Wing (since I couldn't find an actual Y-Wing pic at the exact same angle as the CW concept art), not official artwork, but it's just meant to illustrate where everything lines up.

This is the pic of a (plated) Y-Wing I used for reference

    Nice photoshop work!

I swear, that refrence pic (I'm guessing from cross sections) doesn't look right to me. Still looks too short. Oh well...

Probably just a combination of the "plated" factor and perspective.

This is the first episode that actually had the spirit of the real Star Wars, the Original Trilogy. Anakin's plan will be copied in the Rebellion...hehehehe...

I have to say, this episode showed the potential of the series.

First things first: I absolutely loved this episode. Filled with references and stuff to the original trilogy, and that was great. Y-wings (obviously), the comment that was very reminiscent of the "this station is the ultimate power in the universe" ANH line (I forget Grievous' exact words), the "I have a bad feeling about this" (by a droid! that was great), the certain point of view line, and I think there were a few others I'm forgetting... yeah.

Oh, and I loved the space-going creatures and the flight through the nebula. Glad to see Plo Koon back for more, as I said about the last episode, he hasn't gotten enough attention previously.

Oh, and I still love the droid humor. Thats one of the highlights of the series.

Awesome! This episode had everything I expect of SW: The intense space battle, the uncertainty of the outcome, an overconfident villian and the heroes who save the day.

Ashoka was a tad bit annoying nagging Anakin about his flying skills, but she proved she could think under pressure when she suggested they attack the cannon instead of the bridge.

And to make another Star Trek comparison, the nebula looked alot like the Mutara nebula from Wrath of Khan...I had a 'a-ha!' moment when one of the clone pilots said the scanners were useless. And the droids weren't that annoying this time(even though Grievous whacked one, which was funny![face_laugh] )

I am totally looking forward to the conclusion of this...Obi-Wan and Grievous will hopefully face off if the preview is any indication.:D

Edit: Yeah, I was waiting for someone to say that...but I wasn't expecting a droid.:p

Also, as the previous poster noted, Ahsoka was a tad annoying... but the rest of the episode overshadowed that easily.

And Grievous whacking that droid was priceless. I think I actually clapped at that point. [face_laugh]

This episode is the best so far! Loved every reference to the OT, they were all well done and nothing felt repetitive. The Y-wings owned. I am a huge fan of SW space battles and we finally got to see a Clone Wars one and it really delivered. I'm finally used to the droid humor, it was funny hearing one say that classic line. Plo Koon also is one of the coolest Jedi and his voice really fits his character. Can't wait til next week for the conclusion of this arc.

You know, to be honest...up until the space battle at the end, I wasn't "feeling it" this episode. Nothing was really bad, but it just didn't stand out as being particularly strong. They really saved it with the end battle, though. Very cool and very OT-feeling. Definitely beats any of the space battles in the PT.

Seeing the Kaminoan was cool. The Balmorra run was pretty, but not as exciting as it could have been. I was hoping one of the clones would crash into one of those creatures, causing havoc and a tense escape sequence.

Yeah, I agree...I'm still sort of on the fence with her, she has the ability but at the same time she can be that valley girl type of annoying...and to note, Anakin was more like himself in this episode(the last one made him seem more like Obi-Wan)

And yes, when Dooku scolded him for whacking the droid, I so wanted Grievous to tell him to get his money back for the expensive battle droids.:p

Edit: on the Balmorra run, I think just having the knowledge that an explosion could set off the creatures added to the tension of the escape...you were hoping that they would get through without provoking them, but throughout you weren't sure.

Well, if they keep up with the ST references, they may transport from the doomed ships. "Beam me up, Obi-Wan!":p
