    Oh those wily pickpockets!

I've got a great joke about "reclaim her honor", but I guess I can't tell it on this message board. :p

Ahsoka Teams with an Elderly Jedi Master to Find Her Lost Lightsaber

    <img src="http://www.starwars.com/theclonewars/20100119lsblost/lsb_lost_img.jpg">

When a wily pickpocket steals Ahsoka's lightsaber during an otherwise routine mission, the desperate Togruta teen must enlist the help of an elderly Jedi Master to track down the slippery thief. The search takes the unlikely pair deep into the seedy underbelly of Coruscant's seamy underworld . . . and pits the young Padawan against a new kind of threat, unlike anything she's seen on the front lines. It's a race to reclaim both her weapon and her honor in "Lightsaber Lost," an all-new episode of Star Wars: The Clone Wars airing at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT Friday, January 22 on Cartoon Network.

For Giancarlo Volpe -- the episode's director -- "Lightaber Lost" provided a welcome opportunity to draw back from the high intensity action of the front lines, exploring the characters against a different tonal backdrop altogether. While still boasting one of the series' most memorable action sequences, the episode also focuses on an unlikely juxtaposition -- and the quiet humor that results from Ahsoka's new friendship.

"Comedy belongs in Star Wars as much as anything," says Volpe. "Filmmaking actually plays a lot off of contrast -- such as the contrast between a wicked villain and a benevolent hero, or between slow, emotional scenes and really fast-paced action. The more you emphasize one side, the more extreme the other becomes. They work hand in hand. I think if Clone Wars always took itself too seriously, it would no longer feel like the movies." [Garth's Note: no danger there, guys.]

The very character dynamics of the episode itself are marked by distinct contrast, deliberately pairing the impulsive Ahsoka with Tera Sinube -- a wizened old Jedi Master. Modeled after a seasoned, elderly samurai who improves -- and mellows -- with age, Sinube teaches patience, temperance and deliberation to the impetuous Padawan.

"He's definitely a caricature of his own philosophy. He keeps telling Ahsoka she's too frantic and moving too fast. She needs to slow down and really listen to her intuition, and trust her feelings. We played that up in everything from the way he moves to the way he talks," says Volpe. "To me, it's very much like Obi-Wan telling Luke to trust his feelings, and to use the Force during the attack on the Death Star. Ahsoka is so anxious about getting her lightsaber back, her own anxiety interferes with her ability to track it down. When she stops and calms herself, the truth is revealed. That's great stuff! It's just one of those classic spiritual aspects of Star Wars that I can't get enough of."

Ultimately, these contrasts are the building blocks for the Star Wars universe -- the tools that its creators use in crafting that timeless and intangible feeling of the iconic "galaxy far, far away." Supervising Director Dave Filoni cites the episode as an essential departure from the frenetic intensity of the front lines, and an integral piece of the larger Saga.

"To a certain extent, audiences are coming to expect the combat storylines from the series, but there's a lot more to Star Wars than the war itself; I think this episode really resonates because it captures a particularly nostalgic aspect. We got to focus on aspects that don't get as much screen time when we're in the middle of a battle," says Filoni. "It's also interesting to look at the various influences on Ahsoka from a different perspective. She's being trained by Anakin, who eventually becomes Darth Vader. It's an interesting dynamic, because we don't necessarily know what happens to her -- except for the fact that she doesn't appear in Episode III. Because we see her in these high-intensity situations, it's easy to forget that she's still a child and that she's impressionable. She's definitely still learning -- from Anakin, but also from her own experiences, from her mistakes, from those around her. She'

Well, this one looks like it should be interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing what the animation will be like for the Coruscant backdrop. And seeing whether or not Ahsoka learns a lesson will probably make it worth watching.

Yes, I'm very eager to see more of Coruscant now, especially with the improved animation of Season 2. I'd definately like to see more up and close views of Coruscant in terms of streets, buildings, etc, rather than just seeing panned shots of it - more like the stuff we saw in AOTC. I know it would be hard and expensive to do with animation, but it's not something you see in every episode.

Also, it's good to see more scenes in the Jedi Temple, by now, they could definately populate it a whole lot more and perhaps an updated Jedi Council scene would be cool :D

I agree with this, and I think it will be interesting to see how Ahsoka takes to getting advice from another master and how she may take that back with her when she once more teams up with Anakin again.

Wily pickpockets eh? Hmmm, and I wonder who this Ione Marcy will be?[face_thinking]

I don't want TCW always being serious and always focusing on the war. The episode looks good to me. I'm glad they've gotten past the 'contained' feeling in season one.

The ancient Jedi looks kind of goofy, it's nice to see a less human-like model of a Jedi. And I'm wondering what exactly Ahsoka would be doing out on the Coruscant streets by herself? I'm assuming she's alone.. maybe she's buying Anakin a birthday present.

The fortune cookie looks like one of the worst. 'Easy doesn't mean simple'?

Sinube looks like the star wars equivalent of Heath Ledger's Joker.

And man, does Triple Zero look awesome in that preview! I especially love the propaganda billboard with Palpatine speaking! You can't really hear what its saying, but it still looks brilliant.

Perhaps we'll see more of life in the Capital. All the movies gave us was the senate, temple, outlander and Dex's Diner. This looks like it will be awesome.

Thats saying a lot, since I'm hardly an Ahsoka fan.

Yes, propoganda in the clone wars is something I'd like to see more of - and given Palpatine's nature in his lust to assume the highest of power, I can see him running all kinds of propaganda here and there. I'd also wouldn't mind to perhaps see a separatist alligned world with propaganda with Dooku speaking on a big screen perhaps?

This episode might be worth it for that image alone. It is very cool. And maybe even foreshadowing if Palps ends up looming over Ahsoka's destiny in the future. Him just talking on while she hangs on for dear life already mirrors the dismissive attitude he's shown toward her before.

So is Cryar just getting lucky with those saber swings? I guess she's not using it for anything a blaster coudn't do... taking out support struts and disabling generators and such. Still, it would be funny to see a demonstration of the old adage about non-Jedi being more likely to slice themselves up with a lightsaber than an enemy.

    Coruscant looks good. I'm optimistic.

I'm like totally digging this episode - and it isn't even out yet! [face_laugh]
I'm also very pleased with myself, because apparently I was the first to post the preview link to the Jedi Council Forums! [face_dancing] That alone makes this episode memorable! ;)

Well, aside from all that... I'd say I like the theme and plot so far. :) I am an Ahsoka fan, so I'm kind of hoping that she learns something this time...

I also like the fortune cookie... "Easy isn't always simple." Awesome. Pure awesomeness... So true. :p

I am hoping to catch this episode on StarWars.com next Monday. :D

Well most of the time a fortune cookiee pretains somewhat to the story at hand. Its an easy sounding task: FInd your lightsaber, but the execution will be ascue, hense the Ahsoka Teams with an Elderly Jedi Master to Find Her Lost Lightsaber when Dave Filoni says that she will rush with anxiety and wise old Tera Sinube will always be correcting her. Easy-maybe, Simple-NO!

    Oh, and hi everybody

Their choice of screenshot to represent the episode has gotten increasingly weird of late. It's just the wrong frame grab, bith weird poses and compositions. Same thing in Grievous Intrigue and others before it, it seems like they're picking some random frame instead of looking for some "hero pose" or something that really encapsulates the episode itself.

I see now that it's Ahsoka jumping off a ledge - but it is a terrible choice - feels almost like some animation from Second Life.

She seems so serene it's almost like a shot from some kind of serene existential dream sequence or something. "The city sprawls below me, and yet I hang still, suspended. Something below calls to me." Some crap like that.
