Welcome, one and all, to the Comic Book Mini Draft. If you've never done a draft before, you might want to review some others: Comic Book Draft XI Jedi Draft 24 And so many others. Google can be a powerful Ally. The Premise is the same. GMs draft characters assemble teams, They send in "numbers" to send those teams to battle.Judges decide the winner. An overall winner is crowned victorious. This is a mini-draft because: We're limiting it to just 6 GMs We're shortening the scope of "playoffs" We're not eating up time hashing out a draftable list So, here's the basics: The Participants The GMs - Six of you will sign up. You'll each submit twenty characters you want to be able to have selected in this draft. Then, you'll be assigned a position in the draft order (one through six) which will reverse every round (more on that later). Then, you'll name your team. Then, five times, you'll send in numbers for your team (more on that later) and possibly argue for your characters. One note on the submission of characters. The commish and Judges can and will veto characters that are too powerful or abstract. No manipulating reality or time or other "game breaker" mechanics. Have fun. If the character is completely out of, say, Superman's league, don't put them on your list. The Judges - Pre-assigned as Mikaboshi and a star war. They will add 20 more characters each to the list. Help veto dumb suggestions (there will be some) to the list. And then judge battles (more on that later). I will act as a judge in the case of them disagreeing. The Commish - That's me. I'll judge when needed. I'll add another 20 characters to the list. I'll veto characters when needed. Randomize the draft order. Post matches, and generally keep the draft moving. The Process First, GMs sign-up. Second, we compile (and veto parts of) the character list. GMs, please post your twenty characters within 24-hours of signing up. Please note, you can specify an incarnation other than "main" continuity, just make sure to call that out when you do so. Also, I'm down with multiple versions of things, like the Hulk. So, if one GM puts World War Hulk on their list, and another puts Professor Hulk, I'm down with that. Third, we Draft. Let's say our six participants are Kermit, Animal, Piggy, Fozzie, Scooter, and Gonzo. I would randomize the order and we'd draft this way: Round 1 1. Fozzie 2. Scooter 3. Gonzo 4. Piggy 5. Kermit 6. Animal Round 2 1. Animal 2. Kermit 3. Piggy 4. Gonzo 5. Scooter 6. Fozzie And we'll do that for twelve rounds. So, everyone ends up with 12 characters. Fourth, we go to battle. We will do a round-robin, so every GM will play every other GM. Everyone gets a total of 5 matches. Each round, you'll send in numbers. You go 1-10 and put one character on each number (leaving 2 on the bench). So, let's say Animal Drafted the following team: Deadpool, Lady Deadpool, Kidpool, Dogpool, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, Colossus, Ant-Man, Wasp, Blue Beetle, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America and Falcon. Animal might send in the following numbers: 1. Captain America 2. Deadpool 3. Lady Deadpool 4. Ant-Man 5. Wasp 6. Blue Beetle 7. Colossus 8. Dogpool 9. Kidpool 10. Falcon Bench: The Incredible Hulk and Negasonic Teenage Warhead Each round, you send a Private Message to the Commish with your numbers. There are two optional strategies: 1) Prep Time - a Character gets advance notice of who their opponent is. They get a small DNA sample and a computer file of known weaknesses. They are not given enough of the DNA to create anything, and they aren't given access to weapons (like Kryptonite) they wouldn't normally be able to access. You can use a single prep to give a character 24 hours and do this twice per round, or use a double-prep and give a character 72 hours and do this once per round. 2) Trumps - You can send two characters together on the same numbers. The first time they are called, they fight together (creating a potential 2-on-1), but the second time they are called they forfeit (giving you an auto loss, or a draw if both trumps hit a forfeit). You can trump any number of characters (so, three or four at once) just every additional character added to the trump is another forfeit (i.e. a trump of four characters would result in 3 forfeits). So, using these strategies, Animal Could send: 1) Deadpool 2) Lady Deadpool 3) Captain America TRUMPED with Falcon 4) The Incredible Hulk 5) Ant-Man (Double Prepared) 6) Wasp 7) Colossus TRUMPED with Negasonic Teenage Warhead 8) Falcon TRUMPED with Captain America 9) Negasonic Teenage Warhead TRUMPED with Colossus 10) Dogpool So, when the Commish calls number 3, both Cap and Falcon go into battle, and then on number 8, there's a forfeit. (Note: order is randomized, so 8 could be called first). When the commish calls number 5, Ant-Man will enter battle having spent the last three days analyzing his opponent and coming up with a strategy. Once all numbers are in, the Commish announces battles. GMs can argue, and then Judges judge. We go through all ten numbers. If one GM gets more wins than losses, they win the overall battle. If we're tied (5-5, 4-4-2, etc) we go to teams. In a Team battle, all 12 characters fight, and the teams have 48 hours to prepare. Then, we judge an overall winner. We repeat this until the round robin is done. If a GM emerges undefeated from Round-Robin play, they are declared the champion If no GM is undefeated, we take the top two ranked GMs (first ranking is overall wins in round robin play, second ranking is individual wins in round robin play, tiebreaker is Cleveland Trivia) And I think I covered everything. Characters change a lot so I'm going to be looking at current continuity as a guide. If, for example, you draft magneto and are expecting golden/silver age power levels you might be disappointed. Temporary or currently ongoing developments will probably be overlooked as well, without good cause not to.
Haha. In this case, since I was first, I just named 20 of my favorites. Even though I like DC much better, I've been reading more Marvel, as of late - the Marvel Unlimited iPad deal is fantastic, and DC has nothing like that without spending far too much money.
Ok. This draft has been going for over ten years. That's a lot of material that gets overlooked for a couple of scans of, like, doctor Doom stealing twinkies in the 80s or whatever. If it is primary cannon which hasn't been overwritten by primary cannon since, feel free to bring it up as an accomplishment, but if you're trying to pass off the same page of magneto's shield holding off every avenger that hasn't been relevant to the character in several major changes since, I don't know what to tell you. It's fun to look back at that stuff but I'm trying to establish a baseline and I'm not going to overlook modern events in favor of peak pulp science shenanigans from the coke addled mind of 1970s Stan Lee.
I don't overlook modern continuity either, but it was decided a long time ago that we are using peak examples of characters. I am ok with Inty determining if we are going to deviate from what we have always done, but if we are looking to determine a baseline for characters we have found (out of experience) that it is a lot easier to determine the peak baseline rather than whatever a character is at currently. This seems to just be rehashing old debates, I'm ok with whatever Inty is ok with since he is running the show.

Well if the commissioner tells me to do something I guess I have to do that but I don't have to like it.

Sustained Peak is what I'd prefer to go with.I would define sustained as a several year (3+) demonstration for characters with a long history. For a character that's been around 10 years or less, current is what we'll go with. however in the case that a character has had a major change in their powerset, we should go with current form. Mikaboshi and a star war I suggest we take 24 hours once the list is populated to identify any characters that will be judged on current form, not historical, sustained peak, and mark them in the list so a GM knows what they are drafting. Cool?
1) heels 2)punk 3) dp4m 4) cubman987 5)A Blind Prophet 6) The Yak's Inferno We still need 20 characters from MandaloreYak A Blind Prophet and dp4m Also the judges. Here is an alphabetized list of what has been suggested so far, I merged all the Green Lanterns for now. Apocalypse Aquaman Batman Black Alice Black Adam Blue Beetle Black Bolt Black Panther Black Widow Captain America Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers) Carnage Deathstroke Dr. Doom Dr. Strange Etrigan the Demon Firestorm (Ronnie Raymond) Green Arrow Green Goblin (Norman Osborn) Green Lantern (Pick One) (Do we want more than one?) Hulk Human Torch (Johnny Storm) Invisible Woman (Sue Storm) Iron Man Juggernaut Loki Luke Cage Magneto Martian Manhunter Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards Do we want to allow the Maker as well?) Nightwing Orion Power Girl Rocket Raccoon Sentry She Hulk Silk Silver Surfer Sinestro Spider-man (Peter Parker) Spider-man (Miles Morales) Spider-man 2099 Spider-woman (Jessica Drew) Spider-Gwen Steel Supergirl Superman Swamp thing Squirrel Girl Thing (Ben Grimm) Thor Venom (Eddie Brock) Vision Wolverine Wonder Woman Zatanna
my comment on GL's is that since there were two specific ones listed, it should probably be those two specific ones, otherwise we have a shorter list than actually intended. and i'll get my list up before the 24 hours is up, going to have to think a bit on this.
Nightcrawler (AoA) Mr. Sinister Atrocitus Dex-Starr Cable The Plutonian Max Damage Static Scarlet Spider (Kaine) The Lizard Captain Cold Beta Ray Bill Psylocke Storm Terra Lyssa Drak Kaiden The Shark (Karshon) Rogue Shadowcat Objections: Juggernaut-Too impossible to hurt, and now apparently resistant to TP as well. Flash- Not comfortable with Barry or Wally Magneto- Obligatory objection due to the shield Dr. Strange- Um... Too strong. And he can warp reality. Sentry- Too Strong Squirrel Girl- Isn't her power that she never loses? Zatanna- Just too... Hard to judge... She's a plot device more than a character for a draft.
One person suggested multiple Green Lantern Corps members, so my guess is that the GM wanted them both on there.
heels had stewart and then cubman had jordan, so that's two pretty specific ones, so yea. i'm kinda feeling that the specificity of it should be respected.
