I kind of like Solo's alternative to the opening crawl. Rogue One, I believe their rationale was that since the movie was based on a line from A New Hope's crawl, Rogue One having its own crawl would feel like too much of a temptation to take a line from that and turn it into a movie. That didn't stop them from making Andor, but...

Yeah anyway, I'm happy to see the crawl return. It's such an indelible part of the Star Wars movie experience, and I don't want to see it disappear with the Skywalker saga. I don't believe every movie needs it, though.

I understand why people think the crawl is played out and should be reserved more, but imo, there's no way to make it "more special" at this point, and it's one of the fun rituals of Star Wars movie going so they might as well just throw it in there every time.

The real question is if the crawl returning means the films will all open with the main Star Wars theme. Because, the crawl is going to feel hella bizarre accompanied by some contemporary piece.

While we're asking for presents, can we also get the 20th Century "do doo dodooo dododoo dooo dooo dooo doo" up there as well?

True. Though the Talking Heads works surprisingly well with it.

I liked Rogue One not having a crawl, because it made it stand out as being different/an outlier, but I do want to see crawls in these upcoming films.

I'm glad they aren't abandoning the opening crawl entirely, but I wish they wouldn't feel obligated to include it in every film. I don't think the tone of every movie they make will be compatible with having an opening crawl.

True, but the three films they’ve announced seem suitably epic enough to justify it.

I wouldn't mind Lucasfilm adding crawls to Rogue One and Solo, Special Edition style. Make those versions available to watch on Disney+.

I think crawls would be totally wrong for both movies.

Maybe - we will see. My first inclination is that the Mangold movie should feel a little more removed from the far future (from its perspective) of the timeline. I think I would rather get a more simplistic version of what the crawl provides that feels less "futuristic." But I am open minded, and it isn't a big deal to me either way (for any of the movies).

ETA: Agreed that the crawl seems definitely appropriate for the other two.

The crawl makes sense for these upcoming movies.

The beginning of Rogue One felt very off, very abrupt without a crawl. That isn't just my opinion -- it's as common as "Jedi Rocks is weird."

Solo is more debatable. At least that movie had title cards to serve as a mini-crawl.

Jedi Rocks isn't weird, it's just terrible. The abrupt start of Rogue One was the point. It immediately communicates that you are watching something different. Solo was a single character story, it doesn't have real need of crawl.

LucasArts used to have a crawl in all their Star Wars games and it was always fun, even moreso because you heard the John Williams theme in 8bit. Each director should get to maestro their own rendition, Taika's will be electric guitars and didgeridoo, to honor his native New Zealand.

Not a fan of this idea. The crawl accompanied by the Luke theme made sense for the OT since Luke was the main character and his theme was heavily used in the movies. It was out of place in the PT where the theme had (rightfully) minimal presence within the movie score. Instead of being an organic part of the score, it reduced it to being a form of corporate branding.

I'm all for the crawl coming back. A very SW way to open a SW movie.

Nice to see it come back, not that it really ever went away - it was always for saga films.
    My thoughts...
The Rey film - should definitely have a crawl because let's face it - it's episode 10.
The first Jedi film - 50/50 whether there should be a crawl. If it's a one off I think a Solo style intro could work. If there's a plan to make several films that also include the beginnings of the Sith then yeah, let's have a crawl. Could this be KotOR under a different name?
The Filoni film - If this is a culmination of the Mandoverse (for want of a better term) then I don't think it needs a crawl.

Obviously the crawl should be present for Episode X. ;)

That startling jump cut to the planet/ moon at the beginning of Rogue One is IMO one of the best Star Wars openings. It’s a great example of Lucas’ ethic of jumping right into the middle of the story. Literally.

I could be wrong, but was there not a cut/version of Rogue One that included a crawl? Maybe I am misremembering?

I think they said they had tried it out early on but that it never really seemed to fit.
