I was ordering a few DVDs on Amazon earlier today, when this film popped in my head.

I've never seen it, so I was wondering is it worth the purchase?

It looks like a visually quirky film, with creative and odd characters, and probably was a breakthrough for its time, but does it hold up to repeated viewings?

The pedigree involved here (Frank Oz and Jim Henson) is definitely solid.

It's a great movie, but not to all tastes. I'd recommend against a blind buy.

    Thanks for the heads up.

It seems like I'd love it, though, but I'll watch before buying.

My tastes definitely are geared to the less ordinary sci-fi/fantasy outings.

And going by what I've read, most either love or hate it.

...yep, i'd have to agree with Mastadage..

    Rent before buying..

Personally, i quite enjoy the film, but it's definitely not for everyone (unless you are a devotee to Jim Henson's work.. THEN i'd say "must buy"..)

I thought that this was an awesome film for the genre and era. Is is available on DVD? I haven't seen it anywhere!

Jim Henson was fantastic in the movie. The film frightened me as a kid, and that is what gives it a generational appeal... the film is quite dark, and appeals to both kids and adults in my opinion.

One of my favourite movies as a kid and it's certainly a classic in my eyes.

I never could get into this movie. It's kind of like a LOTR-type movie with muppets.

I hated the torture scene where a poor Gelfling has his life force juices sucked out of him... poor thing!

I have it on DVD, and it's great! It was made before Labyrinth, and has alot of similar things. If you like quirky fantasy films you can't help but like Dark Crystal. Alot of the pupperty work is stunningly good.

    It scares me.
So does Labryth, but then David Bowie scares me by just being around.

Hey! My icon resents that comment!

Now this is a film I've not seen in a long time. To be honest, I'm afraid to watch it again because my hazy memory of it is good, and I'm not sure whether I would like it again. I remember it being scary, and I remember bits here and there (long legged 'horses', giant crab-like baddies, weird White spirit dudes etc.)

Labyrinth is another awesome film, unfortunately another one which I have been unable to find on DVD. I thought David Bowie was really good in in. Didn't it star Jennifer Connolly in one of her first films?

Dark Crystal is one of the best epic fantasy movies I have seen since all three Lord of the Rings Trilogy...............Storytelling, scenario, actors, voices are fabulous. This movie is living proof that you don't need CGI for everything.

Labyrinth is another movie that's right behind this one!

Dark Crystal was definitely one of my favorite movies when I was younger. That and the original Neverending Story movie. I'll have to keep my eyes open for Dark Crystal on dvd...

Not only a Neverending Story II, but a Neverending Story III as well with the Free Willy kid and Jack Black as a school bully.

Yeah, The Dark Crystal was a favorite as a kid, seeing it in the theater. I'm surprised to hear about the people who've had difficulty finding this on DVD. I have it and have always seen it all over the place in the US. It even came out in a special edition big box some months back.
