What is up with the way he died? If you look at the type of wound he recieved you'll notice that it was a mere stomach wound which traditionally are very painful but it normally takes a few days to die from it, we should also consider that a lightsaber cauterizes the wound and prevents massive internal bleeding.

Even by modern standards a gunshot wound to the stomach is considered serious but non fatal, now granted Mauls' lightsaber could have hit Qui-Gon's spinal cord but that still would not have caused his death but rather paralysis.

I would have preferred to see him die of a chest wound, atleast that would have been believable. So why is it that he died so quickly, is there something I am missing or did GL just get lazy and not pay attention to the details (again)?

I hated the way Master Qui Gon was killed. I know it had to happen story-wise but having him hit by Darth Mual like that made me very very upset. And in front of Obi Wan too! Although I hear that Qui Gon may have planned it so if he was killed it would give his apprentice enough incentive (anger) to finish Maul off for good.

Perhaps when it went through him it hit his spine. Just guessing.

A severed spine would normally only cause paralysis, not death.

Don't you die right away from "Harri Carri" or however you spell that Japanese suicide. That is basically stabbing yourself in the stomach.

Although the initial strike is to the gut, the complete ritual involves a more thorough disembowlment, and is finished by decapitation. So yes, it makes a bit more sense that you would die instantly from all that.

I think Qui-Gon could have had a better death, but it had to come one way or another. A lightsaber burn is different than any regular stab, notice this.

Qui-Gon was impaled by a lightsaber, which is a very feasible wound to die from.

Hm, always thought it looked more like a chest shot than a stomach shot.

If it would've gone through his heart, he'd have been stone-cold dead. It was bad enough to fatally wound him, but still give him just enough time to hold on and give Obi-Wan some last words.

Simple: systemic shock. You're body shuts down and you die, but not immediately.

I can call Medical-Droid in to answer this, if needed.

Oh, how nice: "I respect you, so I will let you die a slow, painful death".

Maul did not respect Qui Gon one bit. As a sith he does not respect any of the jedi. But I will tell you what he did do in the movie. He underestimated them. And it cost him his life.

Qui-Gon was stabbed through the heart, and his spine was severed. You don't live through stuff like that.

Oui-Gon prolly got his Aorta severed. It runs down the center of the body. One of the major arteries that runs blood to the torso and lower body. Pre-med major rant is over.
