I remember once trying to explain to a younger friend of mine (who was just reaching the first stages of puberty) how different girls can be good looking in different ways. After much deliberation, I've decided to post my studies here, hoping that it will have meaning for both males and females. Guys should, after reading this, find a clear distinction between 'cute' 'beautiful' and 'sexy', making their life easier when it comes to describing girls. And for the girls out there who read this, you'll learn exactly how it is that guys see you, and could possibly divide you into one of these three categories. Here we go...

    Cute:
I personally define cute in a very specific term. Cute relates both to innocence, and thus child-like (not in a pedifle kind of way). A good example of child-like appearance is what is known as 'baby fat'. Not like other types of fat, baby-fat can be very cute in its own unique way. It tends to be most appealing in the face.
There are other forms of cuteness, most revolving around the face. The eyes can be great expressions of 'cuteness', as eyes can be very expressive when it comes to portraying innocence.

    Traits:
    big or round cheecks
    dimples
    big eyes
short hair (chin length or less)
    small hands and/or feet

    Celebrity examples of 'cuteness':
(images are posted as links for our dial-up friends)
    Renee Zellweger
    Meg Ryan
    Cameron Diaz

    Beautiful:
Beauty is a lot broader then 'cuteness', but is very specific when compared to 'sexyness'. Beauty can be interchangable with maturity. A mature, fully grown woman exerts a feminine beauty that is impossible to replicate. Some men also contribute intelligence with beauty, although not all men make that connection.
It is very important to note that someone does not have to have sex appeal to be beautiful. I will explain in depth in the 'Sexy' section.
Hair can be a big deal when dealing with beauty. Hair is a very beautiful thing, especially hair that is long.

    Traits:
long hair; straight, curly or wavy
well defined facial features (chin, cheeckbones)
    "wise" or "intelligent" eyes
    'full' breasts

    Celebrity examples of 'beauty':
(images are posted as links for our dial-up friends)
    Keira Knightly
    Jessica Biel
    Angelina Jolie

    Sexy:
'Sexy' is very close to 'beautiful', but is very different in one specific area. There is a very thin line between 'Sex appeal' and 'beauty', but there are very distinct differences. There are pleanty of woman with a lot of sex appeal who are in fact very ugly. Sex appeal is not always created by physical traits. Sometimes a certain mental image can create the sex appeal, not the physical trait itsself. There is something about strippers that is very sexy, even though a lot of strippers are really ugly. Also things like flexableness, and certain acts (licking a lollipop) can create sexual appeal without having anything to do with beauty.

    Traits:
    big breasts
big butt (but not "BIG" butt)
    thin waist and/or stomache
    'curvy' thighs

    Celebrity examples of 'sexyness':
(images are posted as links for our dial-up friends)
    Britney Spears
    Penelope Cruz
    Carmen Electra

    More then one:
The best females can actually be more then one of the three 'types'. I girl can be sexy and beautiful. Or cute and sexy.

    Johnny Depp

Except that he's not a woman, but if we're just going with the adjectives.. well.. you know what I'm trying to say here. :p

I'd have to say that your categories are highly subjective and definitely do not work for all.

One thing I find strange is that hair length limits women to certain categories. If this is so, than if they can their hair they change category? And certain things are contradictory in your categories and examples. Kiera Knightley now has short hair and does not have "full breasts".

Because the entire male gender only thinks about one thing. I don't think I even need to say it.

It's not definate. Just because someone has short hair doesn't mean they can't be sexy. These are very generic guidelines. I hear there's about 3 billion females in the world. Obiously you can't divide them into categories with just a few simple words like that. Plus, everyone views cute differently, just as everyone has a different view on sexy.

What amuses me the most is that guys rating girls are usually the ones that don't deserve to be rated at all...

Why in the Nine Hells do guys always rate girls?

It's fun. It's like talking about food: everyone has an opinion.

Are you telling me Johnny Depp or Hayden Christensen have never looked at a girl and thought 'Wow, she's hot!'?

You can't tell me girls don't rate guys. :p

Even saying "nice" or "ugly" is a rating. I guess guys just like to be technical about it.

Even a rating coming from Johnny Depp would be offensive. That would prove one thing, all men are just thinking the same thing, as Targeter said.

I guess guys just like to be technical about it.
Exactly, that makes us feel like cattle: "100% beef, FDA approved".

I'm sure that they have... but you're classifying us like we're cattle in a market waiting to be sold.

This thread is nothing but an appreciation of the female human body.
I appreciate roses because they are beautiful. But there is a big difference between a rose and a tulip, which has beauty in its own right. Its own special way. Are you offended that I happen to find differences in the way I find something appealing from a physical aspect?

Definitions on 'cute', 'beautiful' and 'sexy' really varies between guys. I personally have the same meaning for all three. Not every guy is the same on this.

Here's a better breakdown of the three:

If you say a female is "cute", then you're trying not to hurt her feelings or someone's feelings who has expressed an attraction to her.

If you say a woman is beautiful, then that's a woman who has the traits of someone that you would want to have a relationship with. This takes into account things such as personality, as well as looks.

If you say a woman is sexy, then you're saying that given the opportunity you would have sex with that woman.

I think the same can be said for cute, handsome and sexy when applied to males (from things my wife and other women I know have said).

You say cute as if it's somehow less then beautiful. I believe they are two totally different categories. A girl can be really really cute without being beautiful, and vice versa.

In my experience guys have only used the word "cute" when they are too chicken to use anything with more force to it.

    What about 'pretty'?

With "pretty" being mentioned, you notice these are SYNONYMS, not CATEGORIES. You categorize objects, not people. If a person's good looking, they're either kinda good looking or very good looking. The terminology is subjective, and wouldn't be consistent. (IE to my friends I say Hilary Duff is cute, but in mind shes gorgeously scrumptiously hot)

Yes. The way I've seen cute used is to describe a girl you don't think is good looking, but someone you know does. For instance, if my buddy shows me a picture of a girl he's dating and I think she's not very attractive, then I say she's looks cute. That's just how I see it used the most.

From what I've heard from hanging around my friends who are guys, they have basicly three ratings:
    "Man, she's hot!"
    "That girl's butt ugly"
    "She's not bad...."

    but Beautiful is more lasting.

A girl can look cute or sexy in an outfit but overall a person can find a person just beautiful overall with personality and looks.
