The first 9 episodes just came out, from the makers of Avatar: The Last Airbender... definitely lots of similarities and similar spirit, but lots of twists on it, not a copy... horned Elves with Scottish accents, Six Primal Sources of magic (plus that 7th one no one wants to talk about), Electric Dragons, and starring Grumpy Cat reincarnated as a magic glow toad... though they do have Sokka's voice actor and I think Mae's too Anyone else watch it yet?
Yeah, it definitely is, you adjust quickly but there’s still a few parts that stuck out. That’s my biggest criticism.
Season 2 came out yesterday, and animation definitely was no longer an issue. The worldbuilding and backstory went a lot deeper, and it also went more adults with us clearly witnessing people dying on-screen and seeing their corpses. The "villains" are fascinatingly complex and sympathetic, while also sometimes doing really horrible things. Spoiler like killing a baby deer to use its lifeforce to heal someone It also definitely embracing diversity, and has a married pair of lesbian Queens who appear in a few flashback episodes, and we see them kiss. But even more focus is the diversity of ability, with very deaf characters using sign language, blind characters, those missing a leg, etc. And the animals we see are very much treated as characters in their own right. If you didn't see the first season, this was the intro:
It’s out!?!? Excellent! I loved S1 and power watched all 9 eps in one day. Dang now I wanna watch but that means I won’t be playing Xenoblade 2 if I do so.
Aah... it's sad almost nobody is talking about this show. It's like, Avatar meets Game of Thrones for kids, but with smaller budget. But still gorgeous design. Aside from being a fun story populated with so many likable characters and compelling antagonists, I am really liking how this show is approaching diversity. In which the characters are not defined by their skin color, gender, sexual orientation or disabilities, but instead are written as important to the narrative, have their own unique personalities, and also happen to be women, POC, LGBT, deaf or blind.
I watched the first two seasons over the last 72 hours or so. It's pretty good, though I didn't like Ezran's choice at the end of season two. Actually seemed really unnatural.
LOTS of new info... https://www.polygon.com/platform/am...-prince-season-3-trilogy-lore-books-sdcc-2019 Wonderstorm Wonderstorm’s animated series The Dragon Prince has captured fantasy fans with new twists on classic tropes. At the Netflix show’s 2019 San Diego Comic-Con, creators Aaron Ehasz and Justin Richmond only hammered home the point. There are grand plans for The Dragon Prince and the world of Xadia. Ehasz started the panel by laying out the timeline of The Dragon Prince, which is expected to continue on with four more seasons after season 3, which is subtitled “Sun.” “There is a distinct trilogy quality within the books of the saga,” he said. “The first part of that is The Dragon Prince and that’s now.” Polygon/Wonderstorm The duo also revealed that the franchise will publish new books intended to deepen the lore through a collaboration with Scholastic. “It’s an amazing creative partnership, and every single book that we are working on with them is meant to feed the fandom and the community,” Ehasz said. The deal includes a guidebook, graphic novels, and a core book that tells the story of the saga “but can go deeper.” The team also teased The Orphan Queen, a new story they hope to tell in the series, books or even in a feature film, which follows a young human girl who starts from nothing and grows up without parents. She takes a dangerous journey to Xadia and ends up saving the world. She’s also Ezran’s first royal ancestor. Ehasz and Richmond said the idea was born when they were imagining where the Key of Aaravos comes from. Polygon/Wonderstorm Ehasz and Richmond also dug into the timeline of Xadia, and how certain eras will impact both the books and the series. Five thousand years ago, Xadia was in its “mythical, Biblical first days,” a time long before elves and dragons were allied in which humans suffered and struggled. The “rise of Elarion” came around 2,000 years before the events of the series, and saw humans find their way to magic. Around 1200 years ago finds the arch dragon of sun, Sol Regem, as king of the dragons during this era, when dark magic became problematic and humans poached magical creatures for their parts. Shortly after came the division of Xadia. The next big turning point for the world was 300 years before the series, a time Ehasz and Richmond dub “the era of Avizandum.” Two stories they want to tell take place during this era: The Fallen Star and The Orphan Queen. We don’t know anything about The Fallen Star yet ... but we will. The team noted that history will one day know the modern era as “The Return of Aaravos.” Polygon/Wonderstorm Along with the info dump, Ehasz and Richmond gave fans an exclusive look at book 3. The clip was a flashback, opening with Sol Regem, the sun dragon, soaring over the open water. He lands on a mountain and meets Ziard, a dark mage. ”I smell death,” the dragon tells the human, before asking him kindly to give up on dark magic. Ziard pushes back: dark magic is what brought humans out of the age of starvation, helped them grow beyond being lesser beings. “YOU ARE LESSER BEINGS,” the dragon snaps. The dragon threatens to destroy the city of Elarium if the human doesn’t give up dark magic. He takes flight, and the human shoots a spiral of purple smoke into the sky, channeling dark magic. He drains the life of a flock of birds. The dragon wheels around to take care of this problem. They shoot twin fireballs at each other. The human appears to be vaporized. The dragon crashes into the sea. And that’s that. The creators made scattered promises for the future of the series. Fans will learn how Zym’s dragon egg survived over time in season 3 and, despite being dead, should a resolution for King Harrow in the future. No release date for the next book was released at the panel, but Ehasz and Richmond did unveil a new poster, featuring Sol Regem.
I love the trailer and am very excited for S3. Can't wait for elf Callum, even more bat**** crazy Viren and a seemingly darker Claudia. And more sparkly Aaravos please.
So I am watching this now. Amaya is cool. Those are all the main comments. Good to see a competently written narrative after Star Wars.
Oh yes! There is a thread for this wonderful show. After finishing season one yesterday, I said that this may end up as my favourite Netflix animated show. Started season two tonight and yup, it’s my favourite! Such a brilliantly done show. Really likeable and entertaining characters (Rayla is my favourite - love the accent). Wonderful world building and lore. Interesting storyline and character arcs. Lots of funny and sweet moments. Nice soundtrack. Beautiful animation. I’m going to get through all three seasons pretty quickly.
I just started this. I'm on season 1 Ep 7. Remarkable imagery + interesting characters + a quest = good fun. And oh look at this unique idea. A sword who's magic keep sit as hot as when it was forged and runes to protect the wielder. Beautiful.
Oh we do have a thread for this. The second i heard Rayla i went wait...Nia? Is it the same VA? Edit: Nope, different VA Watched all 3 seasons like 2 weeks ago. Loved boomerang finally coming back. Me the entire time sokka is traveling with a moon elf: “Don't turn into the moon, don't turn into the moon, don't turn into the moon.“ The show is great. Need next 4 seasons like yesterday. The deaf aunt ( names are escaping me for some reason) is hands down fav supporting character. All of the leads are good.
I think it's up in the air right now. There have been accusations made against the creator, if proven it might mean the end of the show. I heard also that one of the VAs tried to defend him and then got abuse on Twitter and threatened to quit his role. https://www.inverse.com/article/60971-dragon-prince-aaron-ehasz-controversy
You're a little behind. The full saga order was publicly revealed for the first time yesterday. The issues of misogyny in the studio were corroborated by a few people in the staff, and there was a whole thing about it with Ehasz posting an apology and vowing to do better etc (we'll see if he actually will or not).
I recently went through this show...didn't realize people here were watching it. Without getting into spoilers, I feel like my sympathies lay on the humans side of things, not the elves or dragons.
