Well this has been bothering me since it's been changed in the DVD release. Orignally in TESB when we first catch a visual representation of The Emperor, you can't see his eyes as his cloak is shadowing his eyes (I think). In ROTJ, during his arrival and afterwards you can't see his eyes until he reveals them as yellow and evil as they are to Luke himself when Luke arrives. But Lucas just had to go back and change the hologram/vocal performance of Emperor Palpatine in TESB also revealing his yellow eyes because? It just doesn't make sense IMO. Thoughts, comments on this?
No, in the original version of that scene you could see his eyes but they were completely different (they were chimpazee eyes). Obviously, Lucas decided to fix that continuity error.
Plus we'll most definitely see them in 'Sith' anyway so there's little use to 'hide' them all the way till 'Jedi' now.
Yeah, the original emperor seen in ESB was an old woman/monkey hybrid, but he decided to get rid of that (hilerious) combo and replace it with Ian McDiarmid. It was for the best.
OK sorry for the trouble, a complete bad on my part I just remember seeing his eyes shadowed in the original / VHS SE release of TESB.
>> It was for the best.<< Except for the loss of the scene's mood and atmosphere. ...and the loss of a good Emperor performance. ...and the loss of semi-decent Emperor makeup effects.
The original version of the Emperor in TESB had chimp eyes superimposed which was weird looking. The new version still has weird eyes -- they still appear to be superimposed and don't flicker in sync with the rest of the hologram. Also, the Emperor does not blink once during the scene.
You attained the rank of "The Emperor's Eye"? Don't you mean "Emperor's Hand?" I personally prefer the chimp over McDiarmid, mainly because I find it pretty funny. But I know I'd rather have McDiarmid in ESB than the chimp in ROTJ....well...I dunno about that. I mean the Chimp would throw in some comedic effect during the Vader/Luke/Emperor fight.
I liked the old version. The newer version loses a lot of its mood and atmosphere to it when we lost Clive's voice. Things could have been done to make the Emperor's eyes work better with the original, and it probably would have been for the better.
