The Emperor's Slugs

I've always wondered....(and been bugged by) In the final meeting with Luke and Vader in ROTJ there is a black "blob" on the edge of his cloak....next to his left eye. Has anyone else noticed this? When I saw it in the 80's I told myself they most have added it in post to cover something up......but as the Special Editions came out and now the DVDs it's still there.......anyone know what it is?

 

I've never noticed it. Time to go fire up the VCR.

 

Finally someone has seen that effect...now i dont have to keep it to my self for fear of getting werid looks..i think it's still in the DVD version as well

The black blob on Palpatine's cloak is none other than the Great Dark Slug, the true master of the dark side!

"The Emperor's Slugs". I never noticed them before I became a member of these boards. Now I always notice them. It was a lighting effect error. It was slightly corrected for the SE.

 

I have noticed them before, never given them much thought really...

 

Thats where "The Emperor's slugs" came from? I've always wondered about that.

 

The Emperor's Slugs suck- once you notice them, you can never not notice them again.

Once I start down this dark path, forever will it dominate my viewings, consume me it will?

Fortunate, then, that I have not rushed to spot them...that inattentive my viewings have been...that not ready for the burden am I.

 

I've noticed it for years, even before joining the boards. It always annoyed me. I don't know why they haven't corrected it, especially with all the other digital changes Lucas has been doing to the OT. It can't be that hard to fix. But what I've always wondered, though, is why the hell did they put it there in the first place? For a long time, I thought it was on the edge of his hood, but now I can see that it's right on the edge of the hood's shadow against Palp's face. So it's actually covering up something on his head, right near his temple. What gives?

 

I belive it is removed from the DVD.

For me it depends which TV I watch ROTJ on. On my cheap old TV I see the slugs but on my newer one I don't.

If you lower the brightness they disappear I notice and blend in with the dark shadows.

No matter what the boxes around the tie fighters in AnH are always there though for me.

 

Slugs??? Never noticed, now I have to watch for them.

 

The spot being covered was actually a small lamp/light source used to cast the glow on Palpatine's face.
That's all an old fashioned movie trick,it just ended up on film so a rough blob was used to disquise it in final production.

 

I'd like to be one of the Emperor's slugs in my next life. It must be fun, sitting around on Palpatine's head all day.

Yep..those rotoscoped dark spots have always been there....even on the recent DVD re-release. I often wonder why they were never corrected with a feat of digital legerdemain, but then I just get around it be increasing contrast and decreasing brightness until that blob is no longer noticable..

It was almost as distracting as the rectangular garbage mattes around the spacecraft. The above solution helped that dramatically with my old VHS and Laserdisc copies.

The DVD releases had fixed those pretty well...

...never mind that Palpatine is still spotty at best!

 

If you have never seen the 'slugs', DON'T - I repeat, DON'T - go look for them!! Consider yourself lucky and go about your business. You don't want to know!

For years I wondered what those rumored slugs are. One day, I found them and went mad. It's the stupidest thing to notice. I curse this board for pointing it out to me. That's why I keep haunting it.
