    Can anyone explain it?

Does Johnny Depp's character enter Hell?

It doesn't really have an ending. Plus it was a crappy movie.

The book was much better. In fact, most of his books were very good. I recommend 'em.

Is the movie based on a book?

    Who is the author?

The author is Arturo Perez-Reverte; the book the movie is based on is called The Club Dumas. He's also written The Fencing Master, The Nautical Chart, Flanders Panel and Seville Communion and some others that haven't been translated into English. The Fencing Master and The Club Dumas are probably his best.

Yeah, Perez-Reverte is THE best-seller of Spain.

The Club Dumas is maybe his better novel. I wasn't aware that his works had been translated into English, but he deserves it. :)

How was the book different than the movie?

(I always assumed that Depp went to hell...)

Mastadge, does the ending in the book differ from the ending in the movie?

I can understand how Depp's character was driven to solve the puzzle, but as he did solve it, which ended his quest, why would he want to continue, and enter hell???

Who says Hell is supposed to be fire and brimstone? He was obviously corrupted by the she-demon into thinking otherwise.

The endings differ. The gates of Hell can't be opened because the book is false.

Also keep in mind that El Club Dumas, the original novel, is about two books: the book to open the gates of Hell (as seen in The Ninth Gate) and a lost chapter of The Three Musketeers.

Can anyone else shed any further light on the ending of The Ninth Gate?

I found this on IMDb message board. The question was asked "what exactly is the girl?"

The girl is the DEVIL. She seduces Corso into opening the ninth gate. That way she can have a passage between hell and earth. She knew that the other guy, Balkan, was doing the wrong thing, hence him getting fried because of his screw up. Corso had the Eight correct pix and she told him where the ninth one is. All the pix are gates since that is what is in each of them. And why did she save him during the fight? well to be honest i dunno, but maybe cuz she 'selected' him to unlock the gate and him getting his ass whooped wouldn't have helped, plus the dudes would have prolly taken the book and the devil likes to keep its property where it wants...i guess
anyway....we are all about opinions here so all the other takes on the girl are valid too...someone just go and ask Polanski....

    Hoped that helped :)

I always thought that Johnny Depp's character succeeded where the other guy had failed because he had the correct page. There's really no way to know for sure, and I think that was the point of the ambiguous ending.

The original book heavily implied that, yes, the girl was the Devil.

Seriously, go read it. It's much better than The Ninth gate.

A stretch I know but I assumed that he entered and became the Devil's consort or something like that...
