So with the release of the essential Atlas showing the height of Yuuzhan Vong expansion, and the recent discussion on the Naboo thread about how far the Vong got, I decided I wanted to create a thread on the southern galactic plane-the section being outside of the the Yuuzhan Vong's expansion. During the Vong War-what would life have been like on world's within this section of the Galaxy? Were local and sector security fleets and forces conscripted for the war(such as the Naboo royal star fighters), if so did that cause any uptick in piracy or unrest? Would the average citizen of Chommel minor or some other world have worried much about the Yuuzhan Vong reaching their skies? Would their have been invasion scares? Reports of infiltrators? Scouts? This question is a bit more hypothetical-but given the Vong's logistical and manpower limitations after they conquered coruscant-assuming they managed to break the new republic and either cause it to fragment or destroy it in a single battle could they have reached the southern edge of the Galaxy? Would the Insider plan have taken the unconquered galactic south into account? Thoughts? This aspect of the Yuuzhan Vong war interests me-far behind the frontlines and not in any immediate risk(beyond the risk created through fear and perhaps infiltration).
Is was one of the biggest missed opportunities in the post-NJO, IMO. Luceno hinted towards the Galaxy being turned upside down. The Galactic South, in theory, would be free of Vong damage, full of refugees from the north, and possess intact infrastructure, navies, and stuff like that. All while the worlds that used to be prominent like Coruscant, Kuat, and others struggle to rebuild. It kills me that TPTB decided to reset the post-NJO into something resembling the Prequels and rush to restore the galactic status quo. It was a golden opportunity that was squandered, in my opinion. --Adm. Nick
Yeah the issues of refugees and "shouldering the cost" could have been an interesting political conflict in the post NJO and one I didn't mention in the OP but did think of. Also I would have loved to have seen the impact of the galactic south in the war itself-did the Yuuzhan Vong have some sort of Ural Mountains esque analogue(nazi's Germany's plan to stop in operation Barbarossa), or more likely were they planning on conquering the Galaxy from one end to the other? Were there any plans to relocate the government further south if mon calamari fell? How far in the galactic south did the Yuuzhan Vong have agents? While it wasn't directly a battlefield of the war itself-I would have loved to have seen its political, strategic and cultural impact on the war.
They did reach Malastare and trashed it, and Rutan, as well. Their armada also attacked Lwhekk. Melida/Daan was hit as well. I assume Eriadu sides with the Vong for a spell, much like the Corporate Sector, to be fair. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Yes but there was a substantial section of the southern galactic quadrant in which they did not reach.
Only two of them are inhabited so far as we know-companion Aurek and Besh are relatively close but even Besh is distant. The more distant five are said by the essential atlas to have metal poor stars and not much life. And aren't explored at all. It's possible that the Vong may have set up scout and colony outposts in the more distant five-after all their scouts were around in the KOTOR era. But given what the Atlas says I imagine the five more distant companions had little in the way of habitable worlds or even world's suitable for vong forming with stars not suitable either and the Vong moved in closer. Given the Vong involvement in local conflicts-I wonder if the Yuuzhan Vong influenced the nagai Tof war or participated in it in some way or another .
To be fair, while it's not the Galactic South that is featured in it... this IS what the whole conflict in LOTF is about. How Corellia, I think Commenor, and other were dealing with refugees and especially overtaxed to pay for DNT's record-breaking quick recovery.
Yes, the effects of the war are constantly showing up/being referenced in LotF, which takes place 10 or so years later, and to a lesser extent, FotJ. And in Millenium Falcon, which ties the two series together, they come across a vongformed planet that was never recovered. The war casts a long shadow in the stories that followed it.
It wouldn't be appropriate for the Vong war to not cast a long shadow over galactic affairs even after its end
Respectfully, I disagree. The Vong War cost 365 TRILLION lives and devastated countless worlds. Especially major systems. The degree to which LOTF and FOTJ "addressed" this post-war is minimal at best. The only EU work that made an effort to do that was the fantastic Legacy comics. They are set in 137 ABY and we see that the Galaxy is STILL recovering. Vong lifeforms on worlds, some still Vongformed, poor worlds suffering, and the Jedi laser focused on working with the Vong to find a way to fix all the damage wrought. It remains, for me, one of the pinnacle stories of the EU. I'll add that I saw this while also disliking Cade Skywalker. The rest of the series and it's supporting cast were stellar! --Adm. Nick
Another missed opportunity. The entire galactic status quo was supposedly shifted. Bothans, Hapans, and Mon Calamari were all said to be on the rise, Kuat, Corellia, and Hutts on the downfall. Looking towards the Galactic South, this map shows you how unscathed it was: Nearly everything in the Trailing Sectors and Western Reaches was untouched. Eriadu, Sullust, Naboo, and Sluis Van would all be ideally positioned to increase their power post-war. The New Territories, Trans-Hydian Borderlands, Northern Dependencies, Slice, and most of the Core were devastated. Vongformed. Shaped. 365 trillion dead. Untold numbers of wounded or displaced. Entire fleets destroyed. Infrastructure lost. Trade stopped. Even basics like communications and hyperlanes are distrupted. The focus on the south should have been a no brainer. Ditto showing the center of the Galaxy rebuilding. Alas, the potential was squandered in the post-NJO. Utterly squandered. --Adm. Nick
IIRC, it was untouched but isolated. I believe it remained an NR stronghold until the end. However, being a major shipbuilder and trade power, the war basically destroyed it's economy. --Adm. Nick
Would it have destroyed it, though -- or left an untouched industrial and trading center in the Core in prime position? Its economy no doubt tanked during the war (despite the likely high rate of wartime shipbuilding), but afterward it's still got all that infrastructure in a galaxy that'll be full of demand. I'd expect a postwar boom.
Which the core probably sought to crack down on-the corellians always had an independent streak and chafed at central authority.
