What I really love about the new Emperor scene is the fact that while the hologram transmission isn't clear all the time and zaps out of places Palpatine's eyes always stay in exactly the same position. This adds to him being menacing. It is also somewhat a tribute to the Original version with the montaged mokey eyes.

Just wanted to add this detail for your viewing pleasure.

You know, i think you may be onto something!
I watched that scene and was wondering why it looked kinda strange, and you are right, his eyes DO stay in the same positition throughout.

Maybe a tribute to the old scene?
    Good catch..
    :)

If only they hadn't changed the dialogue. It sounds like the Emperor is reading Vader a bedtime story.

I don't have the DVD, and I really want to see the new hologram. Do you know if there's any clips up on the net somewhere?

One or two extra lines = bedtime story? Yeah right.

Its not just the lines...its the delivery, too. If I shut my eyes, and just listen to that scene....I imagine Vader tucked under his covers...while Palpatine is telling him a story. :D

I don't see much difference in delivery between Ian and the other guy, but that's just my perception.

The scene is so much more powerful with Ian in it.

Actually, it's rare that I ever see Ian's performances complained about.

Ian's ESB performance is probably his only failure in the SW saga- a pitty the static and unmovingly dry performance ruined the creepy mood of power the original projected (well, combined with the poor makeup and new editing required to accomodate the new dialogue).

Yup, not even Ian himself is a worthy cause to tamper with ESB for some people :p
If anything, people's love for ESB is so fanatical, I could honestly see some people preferring they change all of Ian's scenes in the other movies to the monkey-woman instead of vice-versa.
Or, don't change it at all. Reguardless of the fact that if something like that were to happen in the other movies, they wouldn't stop complaining about the continuity error, but ESB get's a free pass just like the tauntauns, slug scene, matte paintings, and see-through speeders do.

If it's new the fanboys will likely bash it.

You must've had nightmares eeryday? :p

I can perfectly see why people would have a problem with it, the tone of his voice is the epitome of monotone but i think it adds to the scene

Palpatine is blatantly 'testing' Vader, theeyes/thevoice/thelines all add to his coldness towards his 'servant' in this scene

Great scene, and i'd noticed the eyes too, very creepy

This scene is suitably scary. I love it.

    >>Yup, not even Ian himself is a worthy cause to tamper with ESB for some people<<

If he had given a better performance, I would not complain quite as much- but I've said for years it was bad idea to put Ian in that scene because it would totally shift the mood and atmosphere of the scene for the worse.

It's just ironic that this was suppsoedly done so the Emperor would look more consistant in the movie, yet the monkey-woman ends up looking closer to Ian that Ian himself did with that lighting & amkeup job they did.

    >>You were saying ?<<

I'm saying the same thing- even in those examples, particularly with the cloak's hood (since that acts essentially as the character's "hair"- the new ESB Ian is the equivilent of a 80's valley girl), and, yes, even with the eyes to a certain degree (especially if one chalks up the bulging aspect to the effects of those shadows). The facial differences aren't so drastic in still photos, but in motion you can definitely see the contrast where the "monkey-woman" comes closer to ROTJ Ian.
