I was looking over the old holonet news site yesterday when i saw something interesting. It was something about the jedi found a baby who was force-sensitive and whos parents where presumed dead. So they took her to be trained. Then the mother came to Coruscant to get the baby back and the jedi wouldn't let her have it. But what I found most interesting was this:

"Jedi rescue workers found the child to have Force potential and took the baby girl into custody, naming her Aris-Del Wari."

Aris-Del Wari. Notice the "-". Do you think that when the jedi find unnamed jedi babies they name them with a "-" in the middle of their first name? Think about it. Obi-wan is supposedly Owen's brother right? Let's say that when Obi-wan Lars was a baby, he got somehow lost in the desert, where a Jedi found him. Presuming his parents were killed, they took him to Coruscant and named him Obi-Wan Kenobi.

So anyway, off the top of my head I could not think of anything that contradictd this theory.

Could be but I never really thought of it that way. Was Ki-Adi-Mundi an orphan?

There are only a handful of Jedi that actually have hyphens in their names. Why do you focus on them? I would be more interested in why 99.99% of the Jedi don't have hyphens.

Interesting theory. Do we know anything about how Qui-Gon came into the order?

First off, Owen is not Obi-Wan's brother. This was changed from the RotJ novelization. Second, if anyone has the Galactic Campaign Guide from WotC, it has lists of names and naming conventions of different species, including humans and cereans. Ki-Adi-Mundi's name is based upon traditional cerean naming convention. Hyphenated names are also a common human practice in the SW galaxy, it's not Jedi specific.

Owen and Obi-Wan are brothers, but not in the traditional way. Think of it like frat brothers.

Well, everything in the universe is made up of the same stuff, on the smallest level, and alot of religions say that everything comes from the same source, so, in a sense, we're all brothers and sisters. :p

    Hmm

My best friend, coincidentally registered under the name "VaderFett" has his own theory on this.

    Apparently there is a method.

    Right.

Take the first three letters of your last name then put a hyphen.

So with the name "Joe Cool" we have Coo-

Then put the first syllable from your forename after it.

    "Coo-Joe"

Then your last name comes from your mothers maiden name's first three letters and the next three from the place where you were born.

For instance, if Joe Cool's moths name was Smith and he was born in London, he is

    "Coo-Joe Smilon"

Interesting. Worked for me. Try it ;) :)
