    Emotion, Yet peace
    Ignorance, yet knowledge
    Passion, yet serenity
    Chaos, yet harmony
    Death, yet the Force

That is the ancient Jedi code, circa 4,000 YBY according to the Tales of the Jedi Companion.

This is the new Jedi Code that showed up around the time of the Knights of the Old Republic game and lasted for the next 3,000 years.

There is no emotion. There is peace.
There is no ignorance. There is knowledge.
There is no passion, There is serenity.
There is no death. There is the Force.

(IIRC the Chaos line is ommitted entirely in the new Code by the time of the Prequal era Jedi. It exists in the Knights of the Old Republic game but in the form "There is no chaos. There is harmony")

One accepts that yes, there are bad things in the galaxy, but ther are alternatives. There are ways of bettering yourself.

The other denies these negative things utterly. It paints them as so much illusions, and if you're a struggling Padawan who just cannot seem to work past these illusions perhaps you might be inclined o think there is something wrong with you.

The ancient Jedi code is a realistic one that accepts that bad things exist in the galaxy, but you must see beyond to the alternatives. The old code also accepts the dual nature of the Force. Light and Dark. The new one suspiciously does not.

It's almost akin to saying, "Dark Side? what dark side? there's no Dark Side here. Everyone is good in their own way. There are absolutely no problems in the galaxy. Move along and BE HAPPY!"

It is a naive viewpoint of the universe and it sends a contradictory message. The old Jedi Masters warn of the universe, but the principles that underly everytenet in the Jedi Code do not reflect the dual nature of the universe. It is as if the Jedi who rewwrote the code did not want the padawans and apprentices to think about the Dark Side too much. Just be happy.

Well, I want that to change. Luke should totally go back to the old Code in my oppinion and learn from the mistakes of the previous Jedi Order.

Maybe I'm wrong. Which Code DO YOU prefer?

Forget baby-snatching and exchanging life among the general populace for solitude in their ivory towers. Removing that line from the Jedi Code is the real reason the prequel Jedi needed to go. [face_frustrated]

Personally, I prefer the sound of the later version (with the chaos line included), but I agree, the original makes more sense for the Jedi.

I would comment, but after reading Traitor I'm still too confused to form a rationalized opinion.

I've been a fan of the original code for quite some time. Not only does it accept those things within the galaxy, but also within the person.

The original code is inclusive. To be a Jedi following that code, you didn?t just acknowledge that you had emotion, ignorance, passion and chaos within you and that one day you would die, you made peace with that. There is a reconciliation and balance implied in the old code. There was peace in their emotions and they were serene in their passions. But there was also chaos in their harmony, which implies to me stronger respect for differences of opinion. And the ignorance yet knowledge part of the code is reminiscent of the old expression that a fool thinks himself wise but a wise man knows he is a fool. Compare the old code and the newer code with that expression in mind ? the newer code essentially says that the Jedi should go beyond being a fool, which is of course rather foolish.

The old code was for a Jedi Order that was strong and vibrant. The new code was for an order that was but a pale shadow of past glory.

The old code must become the cornerstone of the Jedi.

this is a matter which should not be doubted. the force users have adhered to this code in the times of old. this is the code that must yet again be recognized in these times if the force is to regain a true balance.

I guess that's how the ancient Jedi survived two massive Sith invasions before changing their code, perhaps in fear of Jedi turning to the Dark Side too easily, as they saw in the Great Sith War?

What I found interesting was that the new Jedi Code is extremely unbending, yet Luke Skywalker, who uses this code, allows his Jedi to pretty violate much of the code? He lets his Jedi have relationships, possessions, etc., which all lead to emotion, passion, and all the rest. Extremely weird.

He follows the ancient Jedi and it is time the code be changed back to reflect this.

He mentions the ancient Jedi all the time when he says the Jedi of the Old Republic were not beholden to the Republic.

He obviously ignores the last thousand years of Jedi history when they answered to and were ordered by the Judicial Department and the Chancellor.

(though the real reason is that the older EU was written before the PT, but still even the Post PT EU has Luke continuing to ignore the Prequal Jedi)

Yes, the comic series (which is also known as Tales of the Jedi and givies it's name to the overall TotJ series) is 4,000 yers before the Battle of Yavin. The game is actually less than that at something like 3,956 BBY.

As for the two codes, publication wise the later code actually predates the other. And in some ways is more poetic as well.

Well, yeah, it certainly sounds more poetic, but it's also a great representation of the close-minded ignorance of the PT Jedi order. It seems almost... childish in the way that it doesn't even acknowledge that there are, in fact, evils in the universe.

    "There is no emotion."

    Are they kidding?

Boy, Yoda looks foolish now. Little did he realize that this so-called "imbalance in the Force" was caused by a scrivener's error!

You know, I never quite realised how different that first code was. I actually always skimmed over it. I have to agree that the earlier code is much better. It acknowledges that there are bad things out there, yet you don't need to follow it, as there is always a better option.

When should this code be changed like that? Could this be one of Nomi Sunrider's changes and additions to the Jedi, like how she also created a new council?

I like the first code as well. It's much more flexible and acknowledges that there is emotion, ignorance etc... but that the flip side is also obtainable even if the other is present. It's much more balanced.

I like the first code as well. It seems to suit Luke and the new order of Jedi he's creating.

Clearly, he believes in passion - I bet Mara would have something to say about it if he didn't.

The same goes for Emotion. I realize that they're supposed to be able to distance themselves from emotion but to deny its existence is ridiculous.

Also, to presume that there is no Ignorance among the Jedi is incredibly arrogant.

As for the Chaos line, well, to deny the existence of chaos in a galaxy that has been marked by decades of war with only the shortest intervals of peace is kind of impossible, in my opinion.

I can't quibble with the Death line - that's a spiritual thing that I have no desire to get into.

    Anyway, that's my opinion.

I agree. I never knew of an old Jedi Code before I read this thread, but the old Code does seem much better to me. It seems less draconian, and more realistic.

I suppose the prequel code was formed to basically keep a Jedi's mind on the force and nothing more. The older code seems to be focused on how to make correct judgement when sensitive to the force and it seems more philosophically correct. The prequel one i suppose is the reason why the Force needed balancing.

The NJO is doomed. They're going to last like, 50 years, if.

Luke won't change anything because all he cares about anymore is getting it regular.

The whole, "there is no darkside" is nonsense.

I don't agree with cutting off of kid's families, but parents are meddlesome and would counteract what the child would be told. And also, they'd want it both ways like Anakin Skywalker did. The Jedi are like James Bond, and families are leverage. That's why it doesn't do to be both. I think that if you want one pick one, but not both. Some jobs require a total commitment. Marriage requires a total commitment. One or the other.

The whole of the NJO are arrogant, conceited, self-serving sycophants. They realy do everything for their own self preservation. They things they've mostly done in the Vong Invasion, has been for they own protection. They cost tax payers money and give little in return.

    Corran didn't exactly "help" Ithor.
