Does Coruscant seem like an unlikely place for the Jedi to live? Living in a giant tower in the center of a metropolis, next to Holonet and the Galactic Senate, does not seem to connect with the Jedi's singular focus on simplicity and adherence to the Force. I thought before TPM came out that if the Jedi were to have a "base" of any kind, it would be on a simple, peaceful world similar to Yavin or Endor.

The Jedi strived to make the inside of the Temple very peaceful and minimalistic. There were plenty of gardens, meditative chambers, ponds and their living quarters were all very simple. It would seem such a place would fit better on a planet that would seem "set-a part" and introspective where one could easily study the Force such as Obi-Wan's home on Tatooine or Yoda's on Dagobah.

I agree with you. I took it as an attempt to say that Coruscant was the centre of all major power, government, and influence in the Republic. Hence why it has a major religious temple set amid all the secular business and politicking.

Yet, it does seem incongruous to the way Jedi are striving to present themselves.

I kind of get the vibe that the reason the Jedi Temple was on Coruscant was to remind the Jedi that they are part of a much bigger society and that, despite their powers and knowledge, they were not the ones making the decisions for everybody. They were just one part of a large system. Plus the Jedi were the guardians of The Republic and The Republic was based on Coruscant, it makes sense for them to be there.

The Jedi work very closely with the Galactic Senate. Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan originally got involved with the Trade Federation under the direct request of the Supreme Chancellor. The 2 groups are in close consultation on a regular basis. So yes, they should be in close proximity.

Coruscant is the capital of the Republic and so it would make sense coming from the hub and going out into the rest of the galaxy.

I don't think it's all that strange. Political leaders and religious leaders naturally have a use for each other. And the Jedi aren't just about meditation and righteous personal conduct -- they're also one of the pre-eminent powers in the galaxy. Perhaps the Jedi Temple was once more in the nature of a consulate or "Office of the Jedi," with the real HQ being on a more remote location, but as Obi-Wan_Lennon said, they now have responsibilities to billions of people. They're not the secluded monks they might one have been.

They need to communicate with the Senate and the Chancellor regularly, and know what's going on, so it would make sense to be based in the capitol. Also, Coruscant is in the center of the Galaxy, so they can get to places quickly.

I think it would've been interesting if the films made this point - why are the Jedi on Coruscant? - a part of the story. Perhaps, in ancient times, Jedi weren't in this giant ivory tower in a major metropolis. Maybe they weren't so connected to the Republic. They could've been on more serene worlds, or even wanderers, but 1,000 years ago ended up becoming more involved with the government. That entanglement would've helped lead to their downfall.

That would've allowed the films to explore what it means to be a Jedi even more, from different angles, and could've brought some new perceptions to why Obi-Wan lived in the desert and Yoda lived in a swamp.

Well, that falls under the EU. The Jedi had two places that they called home. The planet Ossus where Jedi were trained and Denba where the Council would meet to discuss events. After the war with Exar Kun and Ulic Qel-Droma, the Jedi lost their homes and the Republic responded by creating the Temple.

I see this comment about that they jedi should have their main base on a more "serene" world from time to time and I was wondering why do people think they should? The jedi is overall a worldly order that take part of the galaxy and that make the political and cultural center of the known galaxy an exelent place for them to be
You mean travelling the galaxy, trying to righting wrongs, protecting the peace and hunting evildoers as in the movies?

I wonder if they have field temples all over the galaxy.

Fits in with the eastern influences of the Jedi from the original trilogy. Putting it in a major power center fits in with what appears to be more western religious influences from the prequels, i.e. the Jedi Temple being like the Vatican and Coruscant being like Rome.

I mean not having such a strict headquarters. There could be temples here and there, but it's not like every Jedi would have to live there. Instead they'd live out and about in the galaxy, going from place to place. They'd find their own missions and live where they're needed out in the galaxy, rather than living in a headquarters and waiting for assignments from the Council.

So what could have been interesting if the prequels established that's how the Jedi were in the ancient past, and then that being so close to the government and becoming their military leaders was ultimately a factor their undoing. It heightens the sense of the Jedi having lost their ways, which the prequels (somewhat) dealt with.

What do you mean with strict? Where did you got the impression that they had to live in the temple? We see that Anakin doesn't do that in the movies, for example. Of course, younglings and instructors have to be there.

According to official materials, there's at least 212 Jedi in the Temple that are either teachers or on furlough. Other Jedi are always on the go and don't stay around very long. Though it falls under the EU, Obi-wan and Qui-gon were on the go a lot following their first mission together. Even a Jedi needs to rest before going off again.

Lucas needed to keep the Jedi in the middle of the political upheaval, so it makes sense that it'd be there. Hopefully if Luke rebuilds it, he has sense enough to stay away from the realm of Coruscant and head to somewhere more remote.
