I've been wanted to post about this for a while. Like most, I was suprised and a little pissed about the vergin birth revelation. I thought it was a cheesy rip-off of christianity. Then I found out this is not so. Its a common motif of myths. This led me to the discovery of Joseph Campbell's Hero With a Thousand Faces, which GL admittedly said was basically his template for Star Wars.
In that book, you can find the whole cycle of both trilogies.
Part 1: The Adventure of the Hero, deals with Luke Skywalkers hero journey, and he goes through all the stages described in the book.
Chapter 1: The Departure coinciodes with ANH.
Chapeter 2: The Initiation, with ESB. Chapetr 3: The Return, obviously with ROTJ. Even the sub-stages of the main stages match the movie. Very interesting stuff any true Star Wars fan would enjoy.
Then I looked for clues about the prequal trilogy. This, fittingly, is delt with in Part 2: The Cosmogonic Cycle.
Chapter 2: The Virgin Birth, makes Anakin's virgin birth predictable, had I known about Joseph Campbell before.
Chapter 3: The Transformations of the Hero, is what I think the prequal trilogy will be all about.
Section 1. The Primordial Hero and the Human, and Section 2. The Childhood of the Hero is where we find Anakin is EP1. Section 3. The hero as Warrior and Section 4. The Hero as Lover clearly corresponds with what we know of EP2.
The rest gets harder to tell
Section 5. The Hero as Emperor and as Tyrant, could predict what to expect in EP3, but it could also be the point we find Anankin as Vader in ANH and ESB.
Section 6. The Hero as World Redeemer, seems to correspond with ROTJ after Vader is redeemed by killing the emperor.
Section 7. The Hero as Saint and Section 8. The Departure of the Hero, seems to also be ROTJ when Vader dies and then is a in spirit form at the very end.
I wanted to put this out there and see what you guys thought. Maybe we can bounce ideas around to help clear this up.

The Hero with a Thousand Faces is a book I've always been meaning to read. I loved The Power of Myth PBS series from a few years back which featured Bill Moyers interviewing Joseph Campbell. Campbell did talk about Star Wars a bit during that show. I've seen it being rerunned a few times on WTTW lately. Thanks for the tip, Stymi.
