Does anyone have any information on this Mysterious fleet that is mentioned throughout the star wars novels. Any links to a site that may contain info is appreciated.
Um....the Katana Fleet was first mentioned, I believe, in Tim Zahn's Heir to the Empire(???) trilogy. But since I'm not an expert, I couldn't really say.
The Katana fleet was mentioned in on of the Thrawn books. Part of the fleet was found by Garm Bel Iblis.
The Katana Fleet was an Old Republic fleet of Dreadnaughts specially configured to run on slave-rig flight controls to allow only skeleton crews (roughly 2,500 crewmembers, roughly 1/4 the total number) to run the ships effectively. A hive virus broke out before the fleet was officially commissioned and during the bout of madness before death the fleet was rigged together and jumped into an unknown section of space. The fleet was run across by Captain Hoffner and his first mate, Talon Karrde, during the time of the Empire before the Rebellion was in full-swing. Upon starting his cloning project, Grand Admiral Thrawn located that Captain Hoffner knew about the Katana fleet and sent Niles Ferrier to pick Hoffner up. The Imperials recovered about 150 ships and the New Republic recovered about 17 of them in addition to the 3 owned by Garm Bel Iblis. The Katana dreadnaughts are still in service to the Empire as of the NJO.
So, does anyone think that the fleet will/should appear in any prequel novels? If so, where, and when, and how?
Yes, the Katana Fleet was comprised of 200 dreadnaughts. And I was wrong. Checking the second edition of a Guide to the Star Wars Universe under the heading Peregrine (one of Bel Iblis Katana Fleet dreadnaughts) it clearly states Bel Iblis had six of the ships from the fleet. This is confirmed by checking the EGtC. New question. What became of the fifteen ships in the fleet that Thrawn didn't get his hands on?
They may have been destroyed over the years by being the unlucky ship to jump into hyperspace and hit an asteroid.
or maybe he did get his hands on them, but they might have been in bad shape and were scrapped for parts for the rest of the fleet (which probably were also in bad shape considering the crewers were insane before they died... who knows what sorts of damage happened to the insides of the ships...)
