With the new film now out, and the new score in my hand, I thought it would be fun to open a thread about the two Zorro scores by Horner. The first score is one I consider to be among Horner's best scores ever. It's brilliantly fun and energetic with some excellent and catchy themes. It works extremely well in the film and outside the film as well. As I listen to the new score (The Legend of Zorro) I find myself liking it already. They did a wonderful job keeping the music in line with the sound of the first, using the same themes and thematic elements. I like it so far!

James Horner really is great. I love the music for The Mask of Zorro and The Legend of Zorro. One of the things that I really enjoyed about the music for both movies is that he based the love theme for Alejandro and Elena on the original song from the first movie ('I Could Spend My Lifetime Loving You' by Marc Anthony and Tina Arena), which I think is a beautiful song by itself, but it just adds more depth to it. Much like what he did with 'My Heart Will Go On' and the Jack and Rose love theme in Titanic (yes, I love Titanic and I love 'My Heart Will Go On', make fun of me all you want). Anyway, I figured that because they weren't going to be using that song for the second movie, there would be a different love theme, so that was such a pleasant surprise for me.

I just want to know one thing: What happened to the classic Zorro theme from TV? :)

You know, I noticed something. Though James Horner is great, a legend, he sure does overutilize the 'hollow shriek' sound we hear in Willow, Enemy at the Gates, Zorro and some others. Of course all composers have their carryovers I guess. JW is no different.

The score for TMOZ is great, but TLOZ is basically the same score with different instrumental arrangements, very little ORIGINAL material here.

True but I liked the original so much I welcome more material in the same vein.

In the Mask of Zorro trailer, does anyone know what movie the music in the last thirty or so seconds is from? I am just wondering because I think it sounds pretty cool. This same music appears at the end of the Pirates of the Caribbean trailer too.

Zimmer, Williams, and Smith usually make up the music for the Bruckheimer movies (nat. treasure, bad boys, pirates etc.) and they had an obvious hand here in Zorro, though Horner is the main composer. The music you hear in the trailer for Zorro came from Pirates, and the main music from the original Pirates trailer came from Braum Stokers Dracula. The second Pirates trailer had original scores from itself, which you rarely see!

But it was The MASK of Zorro and that came BEFORE Pirates. The music probably came from another Zimmer score that I don't know the name of.

Sorry, I misread you there. Thought you meant legend when you meant mask. OOOPPs!!

If I am not mistaken, I do believe that was music from "Drop Zone" with Wesley Snipes. Could be wrong about that, Zimmer stuff is hard to identify origins.

You're right about that. Zimmer's music sounds so similar. Thanks.

The Mask of Zorro is a fun score and ranks as one of Horner's last really solid efforts. Although, I too wish he had refrained from over-using the shakuhachi flute as much as he did. It rocked in Willow and Legends of the Fall but sounded a little out of place in Zorro.

The Legend of Zorro is like Star Trek III, another Horner sequel score, in that it sounds pretty much the same as the score that came before it, which is not to say it's bad but rather that it's just nothing new. A new theme would have been nice, at least.
