No Star Wars film is complete without a scene involving some sort of creature or monster. I'm not talking about sentient creatures (i.e. the aliens in the Mos Eisley Cantina, etc), but beasts like the Rancor or Wampa. Let's see:
    • In TPM we got up close to several sea monsters (Sando Aqua Monster, etc).
    • In AotC we got several arena monsters (Nexu, Acklay, Reek).
    • In RotS we got...nothing really. Unfortunately. Although there was a scene on Utapau that was cut.
    • In ANH we got the Dianoga trash compactor creature.
    • In ESB we got Wampas and Exogorth (space slug).
    • In RotJ we got the Rancor and Sarlacc Pit.
    • In Episode VII...?
Personally, if they return to Tatooine, I hope we finally see a Krayt Dragon. ANH and the EU have alluded to them, but we've never actually seen one in live action, or even in animation. If we do see one, I hope they use the designs Terryl Whitlach made, in which they're bigger than any land creature we've seen yet. Check out this sketch of one digging out and eating a Sarlacc pit![IMG]
Here's another image to show the size:

Anyone else have any ideas or thoughts on what sort of monsters you want to see in the new trilogy? If anything, my only hope is that they go back to creatures that you wouldn't want to get eaten by. When you look at the Rancor and Wampa, for example, those are monsters you just wouldn't want to be a victim of. Even the Sarlacc Pit was more threatening than the arena creatures in AotC.

I posted in other threads that i would love to see Luke and his Padawans battling a Krayt Dragon or other large scale aggressor, perhaps saving a small village from devastation. It would be a great sort of epic, mythological trial.

To the extent you can consider a "living world" a monster, I vote for Zonama Sekot (minus the Vong).

Well, in RotS, there was that giant feathered lizard creature Obi-Wan was riding to chase down General Grievous. Although, it was obviously a friendly monster...

I would like to see some reuse of creatures in VII. The odds of species being on multiple planets is high anyways, so mind as well take advantage of it.

I concur with using anything that Terryl Whitlach designed or designs in the future. She's a badass at creatures and aliens.

Also, let's not forget mynocks and those weird assassin worms in AOTC.

I'll gladly second, third, or fourth the suggestion of Krayt dragons appearing. Please, oh please, LFL!

Oh, I was just wondering if you had a clever joke using the LSA term-that's what the Cloverfield monster is called in the film's DOD shorthand.

No, no clever joke. I'm just a half-witted nerfherder. But that's where I got thew term for LSA. I love Cloverfield. It's just a fun, no thinking disaster movie.

I love this idea! Perhaps that could be our first introduction to Luke and his Padawan (or Padawans) in this new trilogy. Having him take on a fully grown Krayt dragon to save the lives of farmers or something would be quite simply EPIC!

Agree. Honestly, I'd love to see at least one SW-type monster done in full-on stop-motion. Long live Harryhousen, IMO. :)

Hopefully we get some completely new monsters, but the Rancor has always been my favorite so I would down to see them again.

They've mentioned Gundarks a couple times in the previous movies, maybe we'll see them at some point.

I've always had a special place in my heart for space whales. Why doesn't Star Wars have space whales? There's space slugs.

Because the CGI monsters looked cartoonish and crappy.

Some giant flying creature would be cool, maybe something that attacks ships as they are entering the atmosphere? I would also like to see more of the Dia Noga, perhaps in the Coruscant sewers?

I don't know if I'd blame it entirely on the fact that they were CGI. The CGI T-rex in the first Jurassic Park was quite scary and intimidating, especially the scenes when it first escapes and chases Jeff Goldblum. I think it has more to do with the flat/bland atmosphere in the arena scene. You can just tell the actors were safe and comfortable on a soundstage. Also, the arena scene was played more whimsical, rather than serious; an obvious homage to the old serials and Ray Harryhausen films.

This time, however, I think it's time for another monster scene that has a tone similar to the Wampa and Rancor scenes. Which means real sets/locations, along with mood and atmosphere. The monster can be CGI, but as long as they get those other things right, it should feel a lot more scary. Heck, the Rancor looks fake as hell in the composited shots, but the atmosphere in that pit (which was a real set with mood and atmosphere) makes the scene come alive in a way that you can't achieve with a completely green-screen environment.

Yeah I always thought it a shame they never put a Krayt dragon into the PT.
It's be nice to see one if they set something back on Tatooine. I know they don't have to be on Tatooine to show one, but it'd be nice considering the New Hope skeleton and all.
It would certainly be a better tie in than Boba Fett back from the dead.
