I figured we'll need this thread soon, as the "Lightsaber Lost" airs the day after tomorrow. So, I decided to start it. :D

So far, she looks like an unusual, interesting, and competent villain... Possibly a Force-user? [face_thinking]

Unlocked for anyone who wants to talk about Cassie the wily pickpocket.

I don't think it deserves the "heavy spoilers" tag, though. heh.

Well, I figured it might when the ep is out, don't want to get in trouble for not marking it as containing "heavy spoilers." :p You know how some people are...

Zem - why don't we lock this for now, and I'll unlock it Friday after the episode if there's enough to talk about.

We'll make it the official thread.

    Thanks Garth! :)

Cassie is an awesome villain! I hope that they do that "Prison Break" episode that has been rumored and joked about... She sure needs to get loose and wreak some serious chaos!

She's pretty athletic too, she sure gave Ahsoka a run for her money!

One thing about her, I'm not sure I like her voice or not... She sounds, well, kinda stupid... :p Maybe that brings added realism though, so maybe I do like it. :D

I don't know about sounding "stupid", but she definitely sounds young and fairly...innocent...I suppose.

Kinda wish we got more of a background with her, I thought her character design was decent, definitely not as Aurra Sing as I first thought.

Still thought she was a little too ninja like though.

I liked that Ahsoka had a line explaining why Cassie was such an athletic "jumper" species. It's nice how the smallest bit of storytelling can sell a huge potential plot hole. Her abilties also helped to explained the silly outfit.

Guys, this is how you present Jedi foes who don't have force powers, which everyone is always demanding! What, is every non-Force user supposed to have a jet pack?

Despite her ?jumper? abilities, she's still obviously clueless with a lightsaber.

I'm still waiting for an explanation to whether she is a bounty hunter or maybe just a regular citizen who decided to steal a lightsaber. She had no weapons, and obviously no experience with them, so that mekes me think she could be a regual person. But the way she ran away and evaded Ahsoka so well makes me wonder if she is or not.

Ashoka says it really fast, so it is easy to miss.

But Ashoka does comment that Cassie is "a Terminian Jango Jumper". Actually, I am not sure if that is a species or an organization, and frankly it sounds like a member of Jango Fett's harem, but jumping ability is definitely implied by the name.

I didn't really like her though. I never understood what her motivation was. Why did she kill taht guy? Why does she want the lightsaber? Why should we care she escapes?

Okay, let's get this out there.

Cassie and Ione are a couple. We're all on the same page about that, right?

Because Kyle Newman, the husband of the actress who played Cassie (Jamie King) was twittering about them being the first lesbian couple in Star Wars history. So if nothing else, this was what the voice actresses were thinking.

I thought they were just a pair of women facing the galaxy together, a sort of Star Wars style Thelma and Louise. I certaiinly didn't see anything that suggested the two were intimate at any point, it was probably just a joke on Kyle Newman's part. ;)

And an interspecies couple, too. I wonder if they can interbreed like humans and Twi'leks.

    Oh, wait.

    And wait again..

I guess I didn't think that through very well.

Well, Thelma and Louise isn't exactly a paradigm of heterosexuality...[face_whistling]

I thought it made for a good crime story. It's a nice, subtle piece of character motivation, outside of them just being a pair of grifters. Their being a couple came to mind, because its reminiscent of the plot of the movie Bound.

I also like that they aren't the biggest baddest criminals in the galaxy. They're just two girls who appear to be con artists and used and killed this guy.

I've never seen the film myself but Thelma and Louise came to mind because it's what some heterosexual women paraphrase when going on a trip with a female friend.

Like I said before, there is not even a sly aside referencing the possibility that they are a couple, I hardly think it was the intention of TCW team to make them a couple.

Nor would there be, considering the nature of producing TV for America in 2010. But two girls on the lamb for killing a man and stealing his phallic weapon... that's the plot of every lesbian exploitation movie.[face_laugh]

I take it you are going with symbolism then...[face_plain] I happen to look beyond symbolisom, otherwise Tinky Winky from Tellytubbies would be gay because of being purple and his adoration for his handbag. :p

Dude, you need to read the book or watch the documentary called The Celluloid Closet. During most of the 20th Century, American cinema was laced with such symbolic content, because it was the only way to talk about it. It's no different that having painted aliens representing race relations in a Star Trek episode in the 1960s.

Unless the book is written by the creators of every single film it lists instead of some person imposing his own symbolism upon the world you can't make that claim. If it's the creator's intent to use symbolism, like race relations in Star Trek, then I would agree. However two women who could quite easily just be friends stealing something that looks slightly phallic doesn't mean lesbian.

And seeing as the 'phallic instrument' is Ahsoka's...

 Dude, if I have to read ESSAYS worth of text about how Ahsoka meets the standards of some fan-manufactured standards idea like "Mary Sue," you can at least show the kindness of acknowledging when I bring actual research to the table.

Why would you assume offhand that the book/documentary didn't interview creators (such as the original author of The Lost Weekend)? At least watch the doc before casually dismissing the years and years of research that have gone into such subjects.

Why is phallic symbolism okay only when Padme is handling Anakin's lightsaber? :p Obviously a cigar can just be a cigar, but it definitely more fun to puzzle over potentially culturally relevant figurative imagery in TCW than debate whether Mandalore is going to match the Traviss books.

And yet you seem to completely miss the idea that the essays worth of text are just opinions. You don't have to read them let alone answer them.

Interviews can be edited to give any impression the Interviewer desires. Once again, symbolism doesn't mean jack unless the creator purposefully uses it. Otherwise all those books with different takes on symbolism in Star Wars is a fudging mine field of convoluted crap![face_plain]

I missed that, maybe it was the fact that the dialogue sold them as a couple? :p

Wow, you are really passionately railing against an award winning piece of nonfiction (and its generally accepted film theory) which you appear to have no established knowledge. What's the deal, Chewgumma?

If you really think that Padme was literally commenting on the physical density of Anakin's metal lightsaber hilt, then I don't think we can continue a conversation about sexual symbolism in pop culture. :D o_O

    Okay I'll play along.

If the criminals represent homosexuals then those who give chase are representing homophobia. In this episode of TCW not only are the two thieves made out to be unsympathetic criminals with no motivation what so ever but they are caught and bought to justice. So by your logic TCW is not only suggesting Ahsoka is a lady boy with it being her phallic device that was stolen but it also supports homophobia.o_O
