Republic Commando: Hard Contact by Karen Traviss

    Description:
On a mission to sabotage a nanovirus research facility on a Separatist-held planet, four clone trooper s operate under the very noses of their enemies. The commandos are outnumbered and outgunned, deep behind enemy lines with no backup -- and working with strangers instead of trusted teammates. Matters don't improve when Darman, the squad's demolitions expert, gets separated from the others during planetfall. Even Darman's apparent good luck in meeting the Jedi Padawan Etain Tur-Mukan vanishes once Etain admits to her woeful inexperience.

For the separated clone commandos and stranded Jedi, a long, dangerous journey lies ahead, through hostile territory brimming with Trandoshan slavers, Separatists , and suspicious natives. A single misstep could mean discovery ... and death. It's a virtual suicide mission for anyone -- anyone except Republic Commandos.

Star Wars: Republic Commando: Hard Contact is a Clone Wars novel, written by Karen Traviss (forum name: KarenTraviss).

It will be a paperback novel available on October 26th.

    Crap. Crap. Crap.

I assume The New Essential Guide to the Weapons and Technology is also being released on the 26th.

Cool! Maybe we can get a debate started about Ruins of Dantoonie or something... it seems to be the trend of late (debating some other topic in a thread about a specific book).

I, for one, am looking forward to reading Ms. Traviss.

BTW, the author information in wrong in the 1st post.

I'm really looking forward to this. Obviously the people at DelRay thought this was good enough to sign Traviss for the Post-NJO books. Plus a book specifically with clones. Awesome. This sounds just plain awesome. Plus this date will be at the same time as Jedi Trial which too will be awesome.

The most interesting tidbit of th book thus far?

Republic Commandos are a MORE elite group of clones than ARC Troopers.

    That is all.

    ;)

Were ARCs off-limits, or did the developer "forget" about them?

ARCs are specifically mentioned; and RCs aren't ARCs.

Aren't ARCs commandos? Why have something different? How do the two differ in function?

ARCs are apparently team-based commando units; RCs are elite infiltrators, assassination, demolitions, etc... they're trained individually, rather than in platoons (Clonetroopers) or squads (ARCs).

    Clone Troopers = Infantry
    ARCs = Navy SEALs
Republic Commandos = Green Beret A-Team/LRRPs

Not to say that either is better than the other. They both have different purposes in war. I'd actually say that the ARC Troopers are more like Green Bs because one of their roles is converting local forces for battle, as seen in The Cestus Deception.

I'm sad that my source hasn't come through with this yet--after both the waste of Jedi Trial and the excellence of Karen Traviss's prior two (original) novels, I'm eagerly looking forward to Hard Contact.

You are correct Jedi. Each unit has a specific role they fufill, and they all are dependent upon each other to win a war.

The Green Beret's A-Teams all have a specific specialist for any job they need (Sniping communications demolitions etc). They also have language training and operate deep within enemy territory with no support and no real path of retreat if something goes wrong. Moreover, Green Berets were part of the CIA's Phoenix program which amounted to government sanctioned assassinations. [face_mischief]

    Perfect analog to the RCs.

I don't have an X-Box plus it's my B-Day today so I'll get some funds. However I'll get Jedi Trial at a library and wait for it to come out in paperback while I'll get this asap.
