So, who thinks that this should have been entitled Apocalypse a long time ago?

I just took an exam on Heart of Darkness and watched Apocalypse Now, and then I hear that this book is the Star Wars equivalent. Oh the irony. This would have been a much more interesting read, pity it didn't come out a month ago.

I just read heart of darkness. It was a pretty good book, but a little slow going. I'm definently looking forwards to this book when it comes out tomorrow!

dp4m, that TV looks awesome! Is it plasma (we may have different definitions in Australia). How much did it cost, if you don't mind me asking!

You also have Shatterpoint? Care to share spoilers, thoughts, synopsis?

    Sigh . . . a long year for the (much cheaper) paperback . . .

Incidentally, anyone ever notice, though this may vary on geography, that with most programs giving you top and bottom empty borders on your screen, the new flatscreen will just expand that already narrow image wider?

Also . . . how's this thread any different to Mas's Official SHATTERPOINT Thread (Shatterpoint spoilers, I hope)?

This thread is sticky, which means that people see it right off. Otherwise, we get a whole bunch of people making official threads that are redundant.

Ah, foreigner huh? There's an honorable trade in shoplifting *. :D Or you can try and make a trip to the US and buy it there, but that will probably be more than $40.

It's NOT plasma. It's a DLP projection unit (much like you'd see in the cinema for a digital movie), so with a digital input (like the Samsung HD931 DVD player I just ordered with DVI-out) it'll be digital -> digital -> digital, rather than digital -> analog -> digital. aka == super-nice. ;)

Slightly less expensive than decent plasma units as well -- I negotiated to $2999 for my unit. A 42" plasma will run you about $3999. US$, of course... ;)

Few points about the prologue of Shatterpoint:

    - The "Republic == 1000 years old" is floated again, and not really in the good, "Reformation" way.
    - Mace as Sith actually gains some credulity while it also loses a lot. Pay attention to Mace's view of shatterpoints and his perception of Palpatine...
    - It's raised as the possibility that Mace was Dooku's apprentice, even if this wasn't mentioned before. It was unclear from the text whether they were just good friends or Master/Padawan. One of Mace's thought bubbles made me think the latter.
    - What IS it with Matt and torture? :p

    Wasn't Qui-Gon Dooku's apprentice?

Qui-Gon was pushing 70 in TPM. By the sound of it, Mace was pushing 50ish in AOTC...

Plenty of time to be Dooku's apprentice as well...

Qui-Gon was pushing 70 in TPM.

Don't mean to start an off topic argument but er...no.

Qui-Gon was originally (according to what Lucas was looking for in the actor)going to be 60. But when they cast Liam Neeson, they slid down the age to about 45-50.

Plus Mace is about 50 in TPM.
So I doubt Mace was Padawan Learner to Dooku, more like they were close friends within the Order, and Mace respected Dooku alot.

EDIT: Added Mace's age according to Timetales.

So when does it take place, before or after AotC?

I mean, one, the "man of peace" didn't look too peaceful when taking down a disarmed enemy.

(surely, heads did not need to roll in the Geonosis Arena.

Even Yoda seemed to warn us that decapitation is of the Dark Side in ESB....)

And two, the apparent absence of Depa Billaba on the Jedi Council.

(unless I am missing something and someone has a pic of Depa on the council from the movie that I have yet to see)

So when does it take place, before or after AotC?

As its a Clone Wars novel then its after AOTC, six months after I think.

And two, the apparent absence of Depa Billaba on the Jedi Council.

The council you see in AOTC is the same council from TPM, albeit it with two different Council members (Shaak Ti & Coleman Trebor replacing Yaddle & Yarael Poof), so Depa is on the Council in AOTC.

I'm going to be stopping by Pages For All Ages after work today, and they should have copies in stock (I also need to fill in a gap in my Greg Egan library, there too, so... ;)).

What makes me the most intrigued -- and optimistic that the writer has understood the philosophies involved and the potential for this kind of storytelling to truly broaden what has typically been done in a traditional "Star Wars novel" -- is this passage from the jacket description:

Jedi were never intended to be soldiers. But now they have no choice. [...] And he will learn the terrible price that must be paid, when keepers of the peace are forced to make war. . . .
[/blockquote]
