D'you know what the documentaries in disc 2 consist of, because I've never seen them?

Are they longer then those in Attack of the clones?

    Thank you.

"The Beginning" follows the entire production of the film. I don't know if it's longer but it won some awards for how good it was.

thanks. I'll try to see it one day cause I've only seen the movie?

    Are there lots of interviews?

(The Attack of the clone documenteries were great, showing how Yoda's graphics were made, sound editting, and got quite funny at times too)

I don't think there are any "interviews" per say. A lot of it is Lucas and Co talking without questions being asked. The beginning documentary has sort of a fly on the wall approach that just lets things unfold as they happen, such as the final casting of Anakin, Lucas overseeing the art departments designs, watching Lucas go through the storyboards with ILM to figure out which things will be CG, which will be models, etc.

I found it facinating, it gave me a whole new appreciation of the massive amount of thought and effort that went into this film.

You can find out a ton of stuff about the 2 disc set on the Episode I DVD page on the official site.

If you think the AOTC documentaries are great, wait till you watch "The Beginning". Tons more behind-the-scenes stuff than AOTC's big documentaries. It's really good. I still wish AOTC had one called "The Middle".

I loved The Beginning. There are a lot of really nice little moments, like Ewan getting to choose his lightsaber. It's well worth watching.

And no, there aren't any interviews on it, but I think it's better that way. The only times I remember anyone addressing the camera directly was Ben Burtt, following the editing of a scene alongside Lucas, and one of the Neimoidians exclaiming "Oh! Paparazzi!" when he crossed by the camera.

"The Beginning" is freakin' awesome, one of my favorite documentaries ever-ever-ever.

There's no interviews, and that's what makes it good. There's no butt-kissing or self-congratulation. No "oh I loved working with X, and it was a really positive experience, and blah-blah-blah" like you get on other DVD 'documentaries'. Aside from two minutes at the beginning and end, it's a solid hour of nothing but an inside look at the filmmaking process at all stages.

    Rick McCallum loves you!

The Begining is perhaps the greatest behind the scenes documentary on how a movie is made in cinema history.

Let's not forget the 5 featurettes. I love all of those. The three that are on the AOTC disc 2 are nice and all, but nowhere near as good as these, IMO. These ones don't repeat eachother like those for AOTC do and they're really interesting. And, of course, the 12 web documentaries. Also some good stuff.
It's funny, though, how all these short documentaries end just as if they were trailers.

The Phantom Menace DVD has stunning special features on it. In fact it has the most extensive and thorough behind the scenes featurettes than any other discs I have seen, with the possible expception of the Star Trek VI Collector's Edition. Fantastic stuff. You should go out at once and get a copy while supplies last. I hear Lucas will be pulling them off the shelves soon.

"The Beginning" is by far the best doco I have ever seen. Do yourself a favour and check this out. If you liked the docos on AOTC you'll love this one.

The AOTC extras kick large amounts of buttock, but the TPM ones are arguebly better. So yes, it's definitely worth you trying to track down that second disc.

    Thanks guys.

I liked the AOTC one a lot. There was that part about how they designed Yoda, and Lucas talked about how his cloak should flow. Interesting stuff.

And there were a few good humorous moments too like when they put dracula teeth on the model of Yoda to confront Dooku.

Yeah, it's a bit difficult to find it where I live. Most shops just got the DVD with just a single disk (the film) and didn't bother anymore.

    But I'll find it someday.

    Good luck Keeper_of_Swords

the 2nd disk is a great source of special features. I remember my first time watching "the begginning". I laugh at how the guy yells at Jake Lloyd through a bull horn to try to make him react in the podracer. LOL. It i very long.

"The Beginning" is an excellent documentary and one I don't mind revisiting every once in a while. What I like is that there are no interviews or voice-over narration necessary to move things along. I think that allows us for an even more honest look. I think there was over six hours (maybe more) of documentary footage. I would love to see more of that if they ever choose to release it.

I wonder if AOTC had a "Beginning"-type doc?

If one was recorded it sure was not included on the disc release. I have seen both discs and Episode I is superior in both quality and quantity in regards to the special features.

Finally found it and saw it yesterday. Enjoyed it a lot. I liked the film-version with the commentary throughout.

There were a few parts which made me laugh, especially when Lucas showed Spielberg the model of the battle droid and a few comments which Rick made.

The water-fall deleted scene was cool. Also, it was nice to see Keira in the costumes web-documentary.

    This is ******* grim.

Rick McCallum was the highlight of the documentary for me, never a shy man around the camera.

    And like that...he's gone.
